acceleration favored by lehigh men vol liii — no 32 casting completed for m&c production streets of new york to be presented in august by m&c and dramatic workshop the leads for the streets of new york a sassiety melo-drama to be given by the mustard and cheese club of lehigh university i conjunction with the dramatic workshop on august 15 16 and 17 a broughal high school have been announced by professor davis of th english department who is directing the production heading the cast are miss marie sideris the heroine john plumt the hero miss patricia harmon the villainess and myron pom erantz the villain rehearsal are in lull swing and from all in dications a lot of fun and hilarit are promised for both the audienc and the cast veteran actors cast miss sideris the heroine is j junior at moravian college and i majoring in english she is takin the dramatic workshop cours here at lehigh john plumb a sec ond semester freshman from nortl adams mass is an associat member of mustard and cheese plumb played the role of sandy : in m and c.'s philadelphii story produced last semester miss harmon daughter of profes sor harmon also a member of thi dramatic workshop is a sopho more at the university of perm sylvania and a member of th perm players mr pomerantz i junior in the college of busines administration hails from brook iyn n y and is an associate mem ber of m and c he was in thi continued on page 3 more new men to be accepted next semester special quota of local men eligible in fall a special quota of 100 qualified freshmen from the lehigh valley interested in the college of arts and science and the college of business administration will be admitted to lehigh university for the fall semester starting octo ber 21 but enrollment in the col lege of engineering has been com pletely filled until the summer or fall of 1947 it was announced this morning by byron c hayes as sistant director of admissions the special quota is in addition to the limit of 300 students to be admitted this fall as announced earlier this year hayes also an nounced that the next admission dates in the college of arts and science and the college of busi ness administration will be in march 1947 special quota announced in announcing the special quota for students who would live at home while enrolled in the college of arts and science and the col lege of business administration hayes said that the university re cognizes the large number of lo cal students who are anxious to be admitted to some college this fall although lehigh has accepted more local students than ever be fore said hayes the admissions office has been authorized to ac cept this additional quota ' goblet to be new magazine an organization meeting for the purpose of re-establishing the publication of a lehigh magazine will be held wednesday august 7 at 8 15 p m in drown hall the new magazine the goblet will be the successor to the lehigh bachelor the reorganization is being pushed by pi delta epsilon honorary journalism fraternity the goblet is intended to be a variety magazine containing hu mor pictures editorials and stor ies during the war years the small size of the student body prevent ed publication of the bachelor now that the student body has been greatly enlarged publication of the goblet is possible if it is supported by the students remember the success of the new magazine depends solely upon the support that it receives from the students themselves because the goblet is starting out from the bottom there is a great need for all those who are interested in participating in the publication of the magazine any one interested in business adver tising writing cartooning or any other phase of journalism is urg ed to attend the meeting dr theis will go to london dr edwin r theis professor of chemical engineering and head of the division of leather technology of the institute of research at le high will represent the univer sity at three meetings to be held this september in london eng land it was announced this morn ing by president martin d whit aker he will leave by air on septem ber and has been granted reserva tions for the return trip arriving in tne united states on septem ber 30 dr theis will speak on swell ing and shrinking of proteins before the faraday society at its meetings on september 24 25 and 26 in london he is also scheduled to appear on the speaking program of the international society of leather trades chemists at leeds university and the british lea ther manufacturing research as sociation in london dames receive life saving instruction twelve members of the dames club of lehigh are receiving in struction in swimming and life saving under the able tutorage of herbert seeger june 48 and her bert trumpoldt feb 49 the classes which began last thursday evening will continue to be held on wednesday and friday even ings throughout august at heller town municipal pool under the direction of the bethlehem red cross chapter another class in senior life sav ing and functional swimming will begin this thursday evening au gust ist at the willow park pool at seven o'clock it was announced by mr jim geiger of the chem ical engineering laboratory and chairman of the water safety com mittee of the red cross any stu dents interested in joining these classes may do so by attending the next scheduled class at either hel lertown or willow park speakers get instructions preliminary instructions wen given to the prospective competi tors for the williams prizes in de bating and extempore speakinj at meetings held last thursday and friday evenings in packarc laboratory the contests witl prizes totaling 300.00 will be rur during the next two months it wai announced by the chairmen of th respective contest committees george betz oct 48 and paul e schwab june 47 two separate contests in ex tempore speaking will be held i was pointed out with one for jun iors and seniors and another foi freshmen experience is not ne cessary and all students are wel come to participate regardless o previous speaking experience prior to each elimination anc final contest the competitors wil be given a list of general topic from which their speeches or de bates will be selected allowing them ample time to prepare foi the contest members of the facul ty will act as judges and their de cision will be final the committee as a colonel of field artillery assigned to g-3 12th corps he landed on normandy beach in france on june 22 1944 sixteen days after d-day following this initial land ing professor bewley advanced with our forces through europe and was in bavaria at the end of the war after ve-day he went to ber lin and served in the capacity of administrative officer in the group in charge of controlling german industry in the american zone for meritorious service professor bewley was awarded the silver star the bronze star and five bat tle stars the local chapter of irc plans to invite prof e l crum head of the department of greek to be guest speaker for the first fall meeting professor crum recently returned to lehigh university from leave of absence while in the ser vice as a major in the u s army vets may retain stripes in erc former gls who were discharg ed from the army before february 13 can retain their rank as reserves by joining the enlisted reserve corps before august 13 lt col george l prindle director of the second army's eastern pennsyl vania military district organized reserve division announced to day veterans who were separated from the army under honorable conditions after the february date ian keep their high war time grade by enlising in the erc witin six months of discharge all enlist ments effected after expiration dates will be made in the grades of private to retain rank former enlisted men must enlist for the branch of service from which they were dis charged transfer to other mili tary divisions as reserves would require veterans to join the erc as privates
