the lehigh chapter of phi et sigfima the freshman honorar society met on july 9 and pre sented shingles and keys to twelv members who were initiated las semester all recipients of thes tokens were present except josep sterne and selwyn williams thes men may obtain their rewards b getting in touch with either joh tallmadge president of the soci ety or thomas lee secretary there are nearly fifty chapter continued on page 61 car pool set up for weekend rides for the purpose of providing lehigh personnel with convenient transportation to their homes on weekends the interdormitory council is setting up a central car pool registration at the arcadia office in drown hall registrations for transportation on the july 20 weekend are now being received by miss june dawson in the ar cadia office they may be made in person or by phone if more con venient each week there is a mass exo dus of students from the campus but due to inconvenient bus and train schedules many men waste much of the short weekend vaca tion trying to make connections to their homes it is hoped that all lehigh men going home this and the following weekends including continued on page 6 housing bureau proves its worth since the creation of the lehigh university bureau of housing in packer hall six months ago 383 students and faculty have secured living accommodations in bethle hem and vicinity the bureau has secured 142 single rooms for students and fa culty members in the community through june double occupancies with light housekeeping privileges were made available to 69 indivi duals while double occupancies without light housekeeping facili ties took care of another 54 indi viduals the student housing committee is headed by john i kirkpatrick university treasurer his associates are dr wray h congdon dean of undergraduates john d leith as sistant dean andrew w litzen berger superintendent of buildings and grounds byron c hayes and paul franz assistant directors of admission and miss mary e bea ver secretary dames club makes plans the dames club of lehigh uni versity exchanged their favorite recipes and talked of short-cuts in housework at their regular meet ing in drown hall on monday evening plans for the summer ac tivities were also discussed among the interesting programs this summer will be a box-lunch picnic to be held at monocacy park for all married couples on aug 10 mrs doda walker an nounced mrs ruth stahl director of water safety for the local red cross chapter announced that the red cross will sponsor a class in beginning and advanced swimming for lehigh students and their wives the classes will be held during the evening hours at one of the local outdoor pools four teen of the member signified their desire to participate in the swim ming program for the next meeting of the club mrs kathleen daniels pro gram committee chairman has ar ranged with the laros store to conduct a fasliion show some of continued on page 4 worship services in packer memorial official beginning of freshman regulations all non-veteran frosh will from now on be required to wear the traditional dinks and brown socks anywhere in bethle hem from monday through sat urday until labor day it was also decided at the meet ing that cyanide will from now on invite candidates to join rather than ask for bids cyanide the junior honorary society also decided to work on a regular project during this sum mer semester an investigation into the possibility of reestablishing an activities point list this is to pre vent one man from holding too many offices or even participating in too many extracurricular activi ties cyanide will make a recom mendation to arcadia as soon as the investigation is completed i.d.c attacks main problems the university administration's attitude toward a summer house party was one of the main points of discussion at the interdormitory council's first meeting of the sem ester tuesday evening july 9 in the arcadia room of drown hall the council decided to go on record as desiring a clarification of administrative policy toward social activities on the campus and the reasons behind the policy the problem of screening the dormitories was once again intro duced on receipt of a letter from donald wythe complaining of the inadequacy of protection from in sects and other summer pests the letter will be presented to vice president smiley as representing the council's stand on the problem in the hope of instituting some so lution plan cafeteria study the council decided to devote the coming semester to a thorough investigation of a subject close to their stomachs lamberton hall a committee consisting of tom bachman chairman bob phillips hal swartzberg bill d'olier and leonard fox was appointed to conduct the study a second committee composed of george miller and dan old royd was appointed to look into the possibility of starting a ride home service that would enable those who are looking for rides home on week-ends to be put in touch with those men who would have the available car space a number of petitions for dor mitory concessions were approved by the council the absence of bureaus and desks in some of the dormitory rooms was also brought up for discussion and the problem will be looked into by the officers of the council the council also de cided they would be against al lowing the flying club to have a member on the arcadia council lu exchanges ink reports graphic arts representatives of great britain and holland have invited exchange of research find ings from the national printing ink research institute at lehigh university dr albert c zettle moyer associate professor of chemistry and chemical engineer ing and research coordinator of the institute announced last week the invitations have been ex tended by the printing and allied trades research association of england and the institute voor grafische techniek amsterdam holland since its inception in january the national printing ink research institute at lehigh has been solely concerned with graphic arts problems as presented by cooperating industries in this country and canada serves industry employing the resources of the university's william h chandler chemistry laboratories the insti tue offers industry and business the following general services fundamental and exploratory re search the evaluation of specific problems concerning manufactur ing and marketing of new printing ink products and machinery and the training of technical men at the graduate level for employ ment by graphic arts firms at the present time the insti tute supports three fellowships at the graduate level in ink technol ogy and research on the campus holders of these fellowships are sam j nelson a graduate of brooklyn polytechnic institute and formerly on the research staff of the united states rubber company george w lowrer graduate of syracuse university and ernest gamble a graduate of lehigh the printing ink research in stitute was founded at lehigh late in january and is sponsored by representative printing ink indus tries throughout the country i m bernstein is industry's represen tative as director cash awards for williams competitors contests in speaking and debating announced cash prizes will be awarded to the winners and runners-up in the williams extempore speaking and intramural debating competitions stated george betz c e oct 48 committee chairman at the recent meeting of the debating society every interested undergraduate should come to the preview nights in room 416 packard lab where each contest will be fully explain ed the preview nights will be for debating thursday july 25 for extempore speaking friday july 26 both meetings will begin at 7:30 p m debating open to ah two contests in extempore speaking will be held one for freshmen only and the other for juniors and seniors sophomores are not eligible to participate in the speaking contest according to the williams prize rules the de bating contest however is open to all undergraduates each contest will be featured by a series of elimination competitions culminat ing in a grand finale the contests will be judged by prominent fa culty members and scoring will be by a point system assuring uni form scoring for all competitors semi-finals will begin after mid semester examinations are over large turnout anticipated this series of debates and speeches marks the revival of the annual speaking contests which have not been held at lehigh since the beginning of the war jack baum e e june 47 president of the debating society urged every student to go out for these con tests adding judging by the in terest that has already been shown we should have some keen compe tition i anticipate an even larger group than entered the williams speaking contests prior to the war the ability to influence groups as developed through pub lic speaking is an asset highly prized by professional men and this applies to the research engin eer as well as to the production en gineer journalist physician and business man enrollment hits all-time high this summer veterans outnumber civilians five to one veterans at lehigh universitj outnumber civilian students ap proximately five to one it wai learned from george b curtis registrar this morning when sum mer semester enrollment was an nounced as 2111 undergraduates graduate and adult education stu dents of the 1838 undergraduate attending lehigh this summer un der the accelerated program o study 1503 are former member of the armed forces only 335 stu dents enrolled at lehigh did no see service in the armed force during world war 11 business majors in majority of the undergraduate enroll ment 307 are new students at le high for the first time and 26j former lehigh students have re turned this june to continue thel education after service in the mil itary forces of the nation an analysis of the curriculun being studied by the undergradu ates indicates that students major ing in business administratioi head the list with 381 registered the second largest group in on curriculum represents 361 student in mechanical engineering follow ed by 244 in electrical engineering 214 in chemical engineering 19 in arts 165 in industrial engineer ing 113 in civil engineering 64 ii metallurgical engineering 42 ii engineering physics 28 in chemis try 21 in the general college di vision and 14 in mining engineer ing class distribution announced registrar curtis announced clas distribution as follows 602 fresh men 542 sophomores 409 juniors 264 seniors and 21 enrolled in th
