lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa friday may 1 1981 215 861-4184 vol 92 — no 46 officer injured in brawl with over 100 students bv jennifer wilson a riot involving 100-200 university stu dents erupted after yesterday's campus crawl leaving one university police officer injured several university stu dents were arrested as well in conjunc tion with other post-crawl disturbances the injured officer edward shupp was kicked in the eve and maced as he tried to apprehend a student assailant of fellow officer mark diluzio arrested in the incident was scott miller 3 a brother of sigma chi frater nity miller was charged with failure to disperse on an official order disorderly conduct underage drinking and har rassment of a police officer he was released on i,do bail according to diluzio campus police received a call early thursday evening from the president of the chi phi frater nity who said that several brothers had heard a window being broken while they were eating dinner hill gen tz linger 83 president of chi phi said a group of students showed up about <>: 30 p.m demanding beer gentz linger said that the house had just kicked md that they did not have any beer ready lor them these guys started banging on the door and then they broke the window on the bar door gentzlinger added diluzio said that upon responding to the call police found that a bunch of people had broken the bar window and entered the bar room and were demand ing beer one hi phi brother was able to identify the person responsible lor breaking the window diluzio said adding that police warned the student to get out but did not arrest him we left then diluzio said but just as we got back . . . we hadn't been back two seconds . . . when we got another call someone supposedly the same per son as before was screaming into the phone to get up to chi phi according to gentzlinger the mob had returned to the house after the police left as soon as they the police left the whole gang came back wanting beer he added gentzlinger said however that by that time the brothers were able to get the group beer and that's when the abuse started according to diluzio several campus police officers responded to this call and found that a whole group of people . . . about 100-200 of them had returned to chi phi there was no possible way to identify them he stated diluzio said the officers were trying to disperse the group a second time when campus police officer joseph straka observed a student letting the air out of the tires of a campus cruiser he said strata went after the student but that he took off the student was later apprehended and charged with criminal mischief people were just abusing them the police officers throwing beers on them there was nothing they could do gentzlinger said the kids were chanting kent state and screaming any obseentity underthe sun directed at your mother your sister your father you name it diluzio said we attempted to leave the area but the students were lying in front of the car and in the road diluzio said he was then jumped by " 15-20 students as were officers straka and shupp ' ' 1 got up and ran after one of the kids diluzio said explaining that he was then jumped on the steps in front of the fiji house officer shupp tried to get one of the students who had assailed him diluzio said and in the process was kicked in the incidents of violence and disor derly conduct which have been occurring on campus over the past few semesters campus police have begun issuing more citations and making more arrests during the past few weeks according to kugene dax chief of campus police approximately 30 students have been arrested since last friday dax said the arrests have been made fol lowing the institution of a new pol icy which went into effect iftor c»n april 16 meeting between campus police and university administra tors in charge of student affairs according to the new policy police will now arrest students and non-students alike for disorderly conduct fighting criminal mischief use of obscene language and other summary offenses and issue state non-traffic citations identical to those issued by the bethlehem police department and other municipal police bureaus delta tau delta hearing continued due to crowd by barb robertson the preliminary hearink for is ■>*« ot-nts aiiu m allentown man charged in connection with an alleged rape at delta tau delta fraternity house april 11 was postponed when over 200 people turned out for the hearing wednesday night the room at bethlehem police station where the hearing was scheduled is designed to hold 35 john gombosi district magistrate said that the hearing was rescheduled for reasons of justice as well as for safety precautions he said the number of people in that size would create a fire hazard and even then not all the lawy ers defendents and parents and wit nesses could fit in the room most of the ri-.it of lh rowci were university students the hearing may be held in northamp ton county courthouse gombosi said a date has not yet been set a 19year-old woman from muhlenberg college has brought the charges against them according to campus police she reported the alleged rape to rape crisis council of the lehigh valley on palm sunday the day after the delta tau del ta's walk-a-thon party the council notified allentown gen eral hospital where the woman received treatment and the hospital student guilty in rehearing of sigma phi an individual member of the sigma phi society who stepped forward and assumed responsibility for the half-keg of beer stolen from phi delta theta fra ternity in january has been found guilty and will he suspended from the university this decision arrived at during a rehearing of the case yesterday reverses an earlier discipline commit tee decision that found the entire house guilty of the offense in march shortly after that earlier decision was reached an individual from sigma phi stepped forward and claimed sole responsibility for the theft sigma phi has been on probation since september for earlier offenses as part of the probation a review of the house by a newly-constituted discipline commit tee was mandated at the original hear ing in march the committee decided to recommend to the reviewing board that sigma phi be dissolved although the house was determined see several
