forty-eight men received bach elor degrees 11 in the college of arts and sciences 18 in the college of business administration and 19 in the college of engineering can didates for bachelor degrees were presented by dr philip m palm er dean of the college of arts and sciences dr neil carothers dean of the college of business admin istration and professor harvey a neville head of the department of chemistry and chemical engineer ing receiving bachelor degrees in the college of arts and science were bertram francis bartlett donald joseph bistritz nestor blanco y caranza kenneth dwight duggan allen jay goodman john edmond hanley walton francis heley jr john ashberry hunt continued on page 4 b&w's answer to n.y times just before the last issue of the brown and white was put to bed for the spring semester holidays a regrettable incident occurred when two self-appointed represen tatives of lehigh ran sobbing to the new york times with a blood curdling story of persecution and injustice as a result lehigh had the dubious honor of being the subject of a feature article in the new york times magazine of june 16 entitled the two joe's mcct — joe college joe veteran the tenor of the article was acid the few facts were greatly exag gerated and the erroneous con clusions drawn were definitely de trimental to everything that le high stands for the regrettable part of the issue lies in the fact that two malcontents put the en tire student body — and particular ly the 26 who are non veterans times writer efron calls them civilians in a bad light by mak ing a mountain out of a molehill the brown and white which contrary to writer's efron's opin ion is not a civilian organ but the voice of the entire lehigh stu dent body wishes to correct the false impressions created by the article and also gently to reproach the times for a somewhat ama teurish bit of reporting for the information of those who did not read the article these are the highlights according to the times the lehigh campus is the scene of a bitter verbal battle be tween two irreconcilable factions — the veteran majority and the non-veteran minority the non veterans claim that the veterans study too much carouse all night in a disreputable manner and re fuse to come out for school activi ties the veterans meanwhile ig nore the non-veterans call them kids and laugh at their petty interest in college fripperies the faculty too according to the article is divided into two camps with the majority favoring the veteran paint of view and a small minority complaining that the university is enrolling men who should be hod-carriers and that the g i bill is a political weapon which is destroying the college the peak of absurdity is reach ed however when the times says that the civilian students are loud ly complaining that the veterans are class-conscious and rank happy especially in regard to sharing the work in fraternities we carefully refrain from ac cusing the new york times a very reliable newspaper of down right misrepresentation of the truth it is quite probable that edith efron did during her brief sojourn in bethlehem obtain statements from a scattering of students and faculty members the combined effect of which would lead to the conclusions drawn in the article however the brown and white believes that the people interviewed represent only an in finitesimal part of the university population and that their remarks were prompted more by the times reporter's deliberately slanted questions than by any carefully formed opinions on the matter according to the information pumped from several students le high's veterans are allegedly great lovers yet don't even know it's spring are men who study all night and yet have time for nightly drinking bouts who get their wives to work for them yet steal other students girls and who do not participate in student activi ties actually 70 of the partici pants in the spring production of mustard and cheese were veter ans and about the same ratio ap plied to the other activities we are happy to report to in pnmin student that actually no continued on page 2 foreign students again eligible for scholarships the re institution of two free tuition scholarships for displaced students of europe has been au thorized by the lehigh university board of trustees it was announ ced this morning by dr martin d whitaker president of the uni versity in april 1939 the lehigh trus tees authorized the creation of two free scholarships for displaced stu dents of europe but conditions after 1943 were such that no ap plicants were available who could qualify for the scholarships at that time the granting of these schol arships will be continued this fall applications will be processed through the admissions office of the university the approval of these scholar - continued on page 3 service and convocation open summer semester opening the new semester on a note of reverence a chapel ser vice and convocation was held at 7:30 p m on wednesday june 26 in packer memorial church approximately 400 students and faculty members were present at the services conducted by the university chaplain rev george m bean dr martin d whitaker pres ident of the university addressed the assemblage briefly dr whit aker pointed out the fact that es pecially in these troubled times it is necessary for each of us to pause frequently from our daily tasks for meditation and intro spection the president concluded by expressing the hope that le high men would take full advan tage of the facilities provided by the university for this purpose town council dance outdoors continuing with its policy of providing the university with low cost saturday night dances the town council will hold a gala outdoor dance this saturday night july 6 from 8:30 to midnight taking place at drown hall and providing the first social event of the semester this informal affair will be one of the first out door dances in the history of le high university the area behind the building will be roped off and romantically lighted to present a suitable dance floor music as in the last dance will be supplied by al weasner who will operate a portable am plifying system playing records by popular dance orchestras the price of admission will be 75c per couple including tax and this charge will include danc ing and free lehigh men from most other col lege men cyanide has announced this term's freshman regulations as explained by hans baer these rules are not designed to make the frosh an object of scorn their aim instead is to identify all mem bers of the freshman class so that they may become acquainted with one another as quickly as possible cyanide does not wish to force college spirit upon the vet but it is hoped that the wiser and more understanding of these men will not wish to set themselves apart from their fellow freshman the civilians who are obliged to ob serve the following regulations 1 all freshmen are required to greet their fellows on and off campus in a friendly manner 2 as a means of identification all veteran frosh willing to do so and all civilian freshmen will wear seal brown ties and socks and freshman hats these items may be purchased at the supply bur eau and must be worn within the city limits of bethlehem between 8:00 monday morning and satur day midnight 3 freshmen are not permitted to wear mustaches or to wear any college emblems other than that of lehigh university 4 these rules shall remain in force until rescinded by cyanide later in the semester notice of the termination of these regulations will appear in brown and white diefenderfer beck ashbaugh retire on sunday june 30 three le high staff members retired with a total of 136 years of service they are frederick r ashbaugh george c beck and a albert diefenderfer and their retirement was announced by dr eugene g grace 99 president of the lehigh university board of trustees fol lowing the recent annual meeting the board appointed john w maxwell as university bursar and purchasing agent mr ashbaugh has been in the service of the university for 50 years he started as secretary to lehigh's fourth president thom as m brown and since 1908 has been bursar and purchasing agent professor beck began at lehigh in 1904 as an assistant in chemis try becoming an instructor in 1905 and since 1913 has held the position of assistant professor of quantitative analysis after graduating from lehigh professor diefenderfer has since 1902 served in the department of chemistry starting as an assistant he later held the positions of in structor assistant professor and associate professor in 1930 he was appointed professor of assay ing and quantitative analysis the new university bursar whose home is in philadelphia re cently returned to bethlehem af ter serving three years in the army he is a lehigh graduate class of 1926 city council grants housing to veterans opposition overruled on laurel street units opposition to lehigh's housing project by residents of the east laurel street section of bethlehem was overruled yesterday when the city council granted the univer sity permission to build 28 living units in the steel field area re cently residents of that section pe titioned the city council asking that the units be built elsewhere since the reconverted g.i barracks would not comply with the city's zoning laws litzenberger replies andrew w litzenberger super vising architect of lehigh since 1928 stated that the claims of the petition were unfounded he declared that the rigid federal regulations regarding the con struction of the barracks would satisfy the zoning regulations of bethlehem the petitioners were appar ently misinformed regarding the development declared mr lit zenberger who aided in the building of packard laboratory and apparently fear that the bar racks would mar the appearance of the area the development would be well constructed ade quately spaced and in addition would improve the street by pro viding sidewalks where none ex ist at present for married veterans yesterday when the bethlehem city council met with mayor rob ert pfeifle to decide on the hous ing project mr litzenberger and john i kirkpatrick lehigh's new university treasurer were present to put forward data on the pro posed construction work the barracks are being moved from camp reynolds pa by the national housing agency each of the seven buildings will con tain two one-bedroom apai'tments and two two-bedroom apartments which will be available to married veterans president whitaker speaks to graduates degrees presented to 67 candidates in largest lehigh commencement since 1941 in his address to the graduating class sunday afternoon june 23 at packer chapel dr martin d whitaker president of lehigh university emphasized intelligent interest in government and not un necessary criticism our relationships with each other and the relationship of state to state and nation to nation will develop problems in the next few years that will tax the ingenuity of the best qualified men that we can possibly make available dr whitaker said can we afford he asked not to train more men for the special ized tasks in the field of govern ment and can we afford not to train all men to have a better ap preciation of the problems invol ved in the government many of us have confined our governmental activities to the american sport of criticizing the government dr whitaker de clared criticism of government is helpful he continued but people must also go to the polls to vote many people feel he said that they cannot take time to study the questions with which government is faced we must de vote more effort to making our selves good and informed citi zens he affirmed the ceremonies marked the 78th university day of the institution sixty-seven candidates were pre sented for degrees the largest number since the start of the war many guests relatives and friends attended the ceremonies which lasted for almost two hours two honorary degrees honorary doctor of engineering degrees were conferred by dr whitaker upon two lehigh alum ni alfred v bodine 15 bridge port conn and james h pierce 10 advisor to the national re sources commission of china for rehabiltation of coal and mineral industries mr bodine was pre sented to dr whitaker by prof fred v
