dean leith honored by phi eta sigma john d leith assistant dean of undergraduates advised members of phi eta sigma freshman hon orary to always keep an unsolved problem before you at an initia tion banquet held at lamberton hall recently dean leith principal speaker and an honorary member of the society was initiated along with thirteen undergraduates before the banquet the new members in clude walter creitz richard fuehrer r g gold william hardy n d larky b w levin ger thomas lee robert phillips joseph stern david turnbull sel wyn williams and john zickle veterans who were at lehigh before the war and who were cli continued on page 5 commencement day to be held june 23 seniors scheduled to receive their degrees from dr whitaker at packer memorial church forty-three graduating seniors are scheduled to receive degrees from dr martin d whitaker president at a single service in packer memorial church at 2 p.m on sunday june 23 registrar g b cur tis announced there are in addition six non-registered candidates and approximately 20 candidates for advanced degrees the size of the class indicates a steady return to normal numbers after the war time drop from 373 in june of 1941 to 25 last june ast saturday to become the eighth president of lehigh since its founding by asa packer in 1866 will deliver the address the new president had been director of the vitally important clinton labora tories at oak ridge term since 1943 announcement of honors will be made by wray h-ollowell congdon dean of undergraduates the rev erend george m bean chaplain will offer the prayer and the mu sic for the exercise will be con ducted by dr t edgar shields professor of music a list of probable graduates fol lows college of arts and science professor robert pattison more will present the following candi dates for the degree of bachelor of arts bertram francis bartlett english donald joseph bistritz history and government nestor blanco y carranza geology mau rice allen dintenfass chemistry alen jay goodman government john edmond hanley govern ment walton francis heley jr finance peter carlton smith geology college of business administration candidates for the degree of delta capture scholastic honors tau delta phi fraternity with a scholastic average of 2.463 for the 1945 fall semester stands at the top of a list of 44 living group classifications university classes and other cross-sectioned groups these figures were published in a recent release from dean cong don's office the second highest ranking liv ing group is richards house sec tion i which had an average of 2.344 richards house section continued on page 6 this will be the last issue of the brown and white for this sem ester no issue on the 12th of june there will be a very important brown and white reorganization meeting for all men intending to join the brown and white staff next semester an june 27 at 7:30 p.m in the b&w offices in drown hall bethlehem pa wednesday june 5 1946 5 cents vol xliii no 27 dr whitaker who arrived here contributions needed for ravaged europe an appeal for contributions of money or non-perishable food to aid in relieving the present suffering in war-torn areas of europe and asia is made to all students and fac ulty of lehigh university all such donations of money or canned food stuffs are to be left at the arcadia office in drown hall this appeal is made in conjunction with the current nation-wide campaign to aid the many millions of starving and stricken peoples of the world terry o'day arcadia ball big success terminating the spring social calendar at lehigh the university ball sponsored by arcadia attract ed over 115 couples who braved a heavy rainstorm to dance to the music of ken keely and his fif teen-piece band last saturday night at grace hall ken's band with his vocalist terry o'day was in top form and those hardy lehigh beaus and their guests who attended the dance were treated to an excep tionally pleasant rendition of both sweet and hot music the arcadia dance committee of which dick huyett is chairman had planned to have the doors to the balcony open so that dancers might enjoy the june evening however the driving rain and the coolness of the weather made that impossible chaperones for the dance which was held on the upper floor of grace hall were dean and mrs wray h congdon and the rev and mrs george m bean the arca dia committee in charge of the dance included chairman dick huyett harry kohl james den nison and al goodman professor klein career at lehigh started in 1904 professor arthur w klein of the mechanical engineering depart ment who embodies the very ess ence of lehigh spirit and tradition has been teaching aspiring young lehigh students for over 42 conse cutive years he received his de gree in m e here in 1899 and came back in 1904 to enjoy the unique experience of serving as an instructor on his father's m e staff prof klein went to europe in 1913 with the a s m e and tour ed germany as a guest of a ger man engineering society he wrote a book on the kinematics of machinery in 1917 and later pre pared notes on impulse turbines for general electric and reaction turbines for allis-chalmers ; he subsequently used these notes in his own courses he married in 1907 his daugh ter married david nichols — lehigh 32 and his grandson is already destined to be a future lehigh man prof klein has sung first bass with the bach choir for over 35 years is a member of a s m e the engineers club of lehigh val ley and the society for promoting engineering and educaton he is also a member of the now inactive faculty dramatic club and facul sang in various productions of the ty chorus and a few years ago gilbert and sullivan operettas he professes a fond love for tennis and plays whenever time permits continued on page 5 enrollment above normal the prewar normal attendance of 1,800 students at lehigh is ex pected to be exceeded by 100 or more when the summer semester begins june 27 according to pres ent estimates made by the admis sions office a quota of 300 new students two-thirds of them vet erans will be admitted this num ber including only those who have not attended lehigh previously in addition according to dean wray h congdon 400 former students who left lehigh during the war years will be re-admitted nearly 90 percent of the quota of 300 has been selected the re mainder to be filled in the next two weeks the total number of students for the summer semester will not be known definitely until registration has been completed june 24-26 the summer semester will be open to women whose number cannot be estimated but is expect ed to be small the lateness of the lehigh schedule is inconvenient for women who will have to re turn to their colleges in september for the fall semester besides the summer semester two shorter schedules have been arranged the summer work shop will be open to high school teach ers from june 25 to july 21 and the summer session for men and women will be held for six weeks beginning july 1 the emergency caused by the re turning veterans may send the fall enrollment to a peak of 2,500 an other 300 new students will be ad mitted bringing the freshman class to a normal of 600 for these open ings there are already over 1,600 applications on file glee club concert highlighting the first of spring concerts to be presented since the war will be the annual spring concert of the univer sity glee club to be given this saturday at 8:00 p.m in drown hall acting as conductor will be prof thomas e shields with don keller as soloist and rudy schubert as accompanist memorial day service drew large crowds letter from sailor highlights sermon a crowd of over five hundred thronged packer memorial church last thursday to honor those men who died during the second world war rev george bean conducted the service assisted by dr shields and the lehigh choir the service opened with the singing of the hymn god bless our native land following the reading of the scripture lesson appropriate prayers were offered mr bean's sermon was entitled greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends it was a very ap propriate sermon as it stressed the sacrifices our boys made while serving their country the sermon closed with an actual letter writ ten to a rector on the west coast dear sir i'm a sailor and i'll be pulling out in a few hours but first i have something to say i came into your place this morning lonely as hell and scared to death about sailing again i wanted to talk to someone pretty bad and there was a girl who said hello to me she said for me to sit down and we got talking about the fu ture i said that maybe there wouldn't be one for me if only a fellow could be sure i said that something would come through worth dying for it wouldn't be so bad and then she said the queerest thing she smiled and said that's easy christ is coming through and he is worth dying for i look ed at her and she kept talking as if he was alive and a good pal of hers i sort of expected him to walk in the door it was so real i was only there about ten mm utes and i don't know why but her talking to me like that sort of did something to me and i'm not lonely anymore and i'm not scared it was like she had said i want to make you acquainted with my friend jesus you ought to get to know each other as he'll be going your way i'm nineteen and i never knew before that there was a god like that who would go along with a fellow it don't mat ter so much now if my ship goes down and i go down with it as long as there's a god that no sub can sink and that won't change from what's right even if the war goes on forever i wanted to go back and tell that girl thank you but i
