brown and white lehigh university vol 92 — no 7 bethlehem pa tuesday september 23 1980 861-41k4 lack of minority positions studied by faculty provost by darren maloney a lack of good candidates for faculty positions was the major topic of discussion at thursday's equal opportunity advisory committee eoac meeting university provost and equal op portunity and affirmative action officer arthur humphrey questioned the university's efforts in finding qualified women and minority faculty candidates part of the eoac's function is to see that minorities and women receive equal op portunity to occupy faculty positions at the university humphrey cited the upcoming vacancy in the dean of engineering position as an example of the committee's problems in the area of faculty recruitment we didn't get a single application from a woman for the dean of engineering position out of approximately 70 ap plications humphrey said he suggested that the reason for this shortage is ineffectiveness on the part of the search committees in seeking out candidates and said he feels the eoac should be assisting these search com mittees recently elected chairman sharon friedman said she believes the eoac could do other things in furthering women and minority faculty employment friedman said this belief was one reason for her presentation of an ad to be printed in the brown ami white soliciting public opinion on how to further communication on and understanding of the roles of minority groups and women on campus also discussed at the meeting was a proposal advocating a new tenure granting procedure humphrey described the new more highly defined procedure as a far more open policy than we've always had before under the proposed policy candidates for tenure would have a more informed position on their tenure standing under the present system a tenure candidate is screened by external reviewers as well as the university's representatives these external reviewers are required to present their opinions through letters in the new proposal these letters will be seen by the department in which the candidates work as well as by the tenure candidates if they so choose the new tenure proposal must first be approved by the university personnel committee then by the faculty and must finally be adopted by the university board of trustees if a revision in the tenure granting procedure is to occur pull b&w photo by 808 youngentob the lehigh side was nearly full for saturday's home opener against house colgate the gridders tied the red raiders 17 all see story page 12
