lehigh university brown and white vol 92 — no 5 bethlehem pa friday september 19 1980 861-4184 sigma phi society guilty on three discipline charges by ed white sigma phi society has been placed on full university probation for the entire 1980-81 academic year after being found guilty tuesday by the university's committee on discipline on three charges resulting from the discovery of a cache of stolen property at the fraternity over the summer in addition to being placed on probation the fraternity must make full restitution including compensation for any damages for all stolen property and must report back to the discipline committee by may 1 1981 with positive reasons why the chapter should continue at the university according to the discipline committee's report if the fraternity fails to meet any one or all of the conditions set forth by the committee the chapter will be dissolved according to the decision which was issued after closed hearings sept 12 and 15 the charges stemmed from the june 20 discovery by campus police of several thousand dollars worth or reportedly stolen items m the fraternity's chapter room campus police reportedly discovered the items while responding to an alarm from the house's automatic system while police were m the house they found the chapter room door open and when they went to close it discovered the room filled with stolen goods belonging to other lehigh fraternities the university the city the postal service and others ac cording to a letter sent by dean of students william quay to andy hospodor 81 sigma phi house president originally the fraternity had entered a plea of not guilty to all the charges but changed its plea to guilty on all three counts after initial testimony was heard m the case the fraternity was found guilty tuesday of multiple thefts of property retention of stolen property and corporately pursuing and condoning the practice of theft and retention of stolen property according to quay the committee to the public a few hours before it began yesterday the university discipline committee heard charges brought by the university against delta tau delta fraternity proceedings are over but the committee had not reached a decision as of last night according to wayne shurts 81 president of delta tau delta the fraternity has been accused of holding a wet t-shirt contest at a party during greek week last spring reportedly several women disrobed at the contest members of the fraternity said that the hearing was closed because of the large number of people whom they realized were planning to attend pamphlets urging women leaders of campus groups to attend the hearing were distributed on campus and a crowd of women gathered outside the hearing room shortly before the hearing began the women the brown and white and all others excluding members of the fraternity counsel for both sides witnesses and the disciplinary committee were barred from entering they are within their rights if the fraternity wants the hearing closed said marilyn gerdes assistant professor of accounting and law she was one of the women waiting outside the robm if the university is interested m having open hearings there should be a rule change she said delta tau delta was found guilty m 1978 of a class b violation of the university code of conduct m connection with a wet t-shirt contest held during greek week that year the fraternity was placed on social probation as a result of the conviction john anderson coming tuesday to stabler arena by steve samuelson independent presidential candidate john anderson will speak m the stabler arena late tuesday afternoon during a campaign swing through the lehigh valley according to david branton 82 anderson's campaign chairman at the university the candidate will also stop tuesday m philadelphia scranton and harrisburg and will probably tour a textile mill m allentown before arriving m bethlehem according to branton who received confirmation of the visit from john coyne anderson's philadelphia coordinator while the exact times and places of anderson's appearances are subject to change branton said we do know that the congressman will be speaking at stabler arena between 4 and 5 p.m and that a press conference will be held at the university the arena is available for anderson's 20 to 30 minute speech according to richard fritz university director of events he was to meet today with anderson organizers to settle the details of the ap pearance plans for new computers proposed by trevor bond plans for the purchase of a 1.8 million computer system will be presented to the university's board of trustees at its october meeting according to ben wechsler director of computer services the plans which represent the culmination of a three-year study of the university's computing wants and needs are subject to the board's approval wechsler said the computers chosen are the ibm 4331 and the cyber 170-720 which if approved would be operating by the january and fall of 1981 respectively the university has recently acquired a dec-system 30-60 computer as well wechsler pointed out three chief ad vantages to replacing the existing com puter a 12-year-old cdc 4000 which he said is rapidly becoming obsolete first wechsler said the new system will replace outdated software with modern software this includes new operating systems compilers and other new components the university com munity will be able to perform many more functions than is possible with the current cdc he added wechsler also pointed out that m terms
