the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 09 friday october 2 1998 all the lehigh news first young stock brokers meet over dinner by elisabeth austin-page news writer the investment club discussed their new investment strategies and goals over dinner at anna mia's restaurant sept 10th president jeff laborsky 99 emphasizes that the club is open to all students regardless of the college that they are studying in we're planning on having speakers come this year laborsky said we are also planning trips to the new york stock exchange the club began in the late 1960's with a main focus of researching and investing in the stock market these investments are made possible by donations from lehigh alumni jack dryfus and david rights as of last year the club took a new approach to their actions by splitting the group up into two portfolios dryfus and rights the dryfus portfolio is the older and larger of the two with a balance of 200,000 the rights portfolio began last spring geared more as a growth portfolio with a lot more risk taking and an accumulat ing balance of 56,000 vice president aubrie fine 00 feels that the club has helped broaden her knowledge of accounting and finance which are her major courses of study i've learned so much from it fine said you real ly get to put your ideas into action each week 20 members look over research that con sists of new or old stocks then the club votes on the number of shares to buy or sell laborsky said it's a wonderful chance to learn about the finance market as well as meet new disturbances selected michael george as their new director i'm thrilled i'm absolutely thrilled george said centennial school located in hanover township instructs more than 100 students ages six to 20 and is affil iated with lehigh's college of education this affiliation creates an environment which enables students to effec tively learn while also aiding in the preparation of its teach ers mostly lehigh undergraduates for future roles in spe cial education george became familiar with this position through the chronicle of higher learning which opened the door for a variety of applicants 96-0 to approve a higher education bill tuesday that will require more statistics on crimes occurring on college campuses to be reported there will be no amendments to this bill which has been passed by both the house and senate and is now awaiting approval from president clinton the bill was introduced by pennsylvania senator arlen specter in order to tighten the federal laws concerning the reporting of on campus crimes specter expressed his satisfaction with the bill during a press conference tuesday where he was joined by howard and connie clery the parents of jeanne clery who was raped and murdered in her room on the lehigh campus in 1986 the clerys have since founded security on campus a non-profit victims services organization dedicated to serving as a watchdog for campus safety the law is a living memory to our beau tiful daughter and the thousands of other victims of campus crime connie clery said in the philadelphia inquirer this will save many lives over the next years the most significant attributes of this legislation are to expand the categories of crimes reported on campus which includes prejudice and sexual crimes establish programs to protect women against violence and decrease abuse of drugs and alcohol the house and senate both voted ear lier this year to include a number of these provisions in separate versions of the bill after pressure to amend the reporting of campus crime statistics open campus court proceedings and address problems of violence against women and binge drinking and drug abuse members from both houses met earlier in september to resolve the differences in the separate bills and submitted their compromise bill last friday in a press release s daniel carter vice president of security on campus said these changes
