the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 08 tuesday september 29 1998 all the lehigh news first largest career fair offers jobs by melissa garofalo news writer career services annual career fair drew resume-toting students to rauch field house on sept 23 this year's career fair was the largest lehigh has spon sored thus far more than 150 companies came to recruit lehigh students this year compared to 116 last year and an average of 1 10 companies in recent years lori kennedy associate director of career services attributes this sharp increase of companies attending to the strong economy a healthy and growing economy has a direct impact on the amount of recruiting a company will do kennedy said due to the size of this year's fair it grew out of its old home lacocca hall and was relocated to rauch field house this new location proved to be a major improvement because all companies had professional exhibits and every company could display its exhibit on the same floor kennedy said this had been impossible in lacocca hall due to lack of space this also gave a chance for smaller companies to be on the same floor as their leading counterparts such as at&t bethlehem steel ernst & young general motors ibm corporation johnson & johnson merck merrill lynch & co and procter & gamble students were impressed by the number of large well known companies that came to recruit lehigh students however other students said they were more impressed with some of the smaller ones scott stover 00 an electrical engineering major said he liked the exposure to a wide variety of companies the smaller companies especially care more about their employees stover said another improvement introduced since last year was career services marketing efforts in order to advertise and prepare students for this year's career fair a mass e-mail was sent to all undergraduates to advertise the fair and a resume marathon was held in rauch business center the week before students were also given the option of attending informa tional sessions to help prepare them for talking to the corpo rate representatives who would be present overall the common response from juniors and seniors who attended this year's fair and others in the past said they were pleased with the number of changes that had been made however all students did not agree that the changes were for the better stephen weiss 02 said he was disappointed the career fair seemed to cater to engineers instead of all of the stu dent body the career fair was great if you are an engineering major weiss said weiss also said that he was more successful looking for internships on the internet than at the fair zoellner opens new season by jennifer o'brien senior news editor new york chamber symphony performs along with faculty the new york chamber symphony and members of lehigh's faculty joined together in a perfor mance saturday night as part of the zoellner art center's season open ing events eva bornstein executive director of zoellner said the concert was an excellent way of kicking off another performance season this is a very good concert bornstein said the new york chamber symphony is very well known we also have a number of faculty members who participated in the concert as soloists we have a combination of a good program a good orchestra and good soloists the selections of the night included a number of well-known pieces along with an original corn position by paul salerni professor of music and director of the lehigh university very modern ensemble the event was conducted by steven sametz professor of music and director of choral arts the evening opened with the four movements of prokofiev's classical symphony sametz said prokofiev composed the entire symphony away from the piano helping prokofiev to achieve a greater clarity of line the result is a work of eigh teenth-century design rich in twenti eth-century harmonies sametz said in the evening's program the classical symphony was fol lowed by president gregory c farrington's reading of a prose-poem by james agee in which agee recalls a summer evening from long ago debra field professor of voice and associate conductor of the university choir then performed the accompanying knoxville summer of 1915 by samuel barber who was inspired by the memories agee's poem had stirred in him the musical setting matches the conversational tone of the poetry lulling us into the lazy atmosphere of the south sametz said in the program nostalgic though it may be it is not necessarily a simpler or untroubled time hrvoje benko 01 vice presi dent of touring for lehigh's philharmonic orchestra said farrington's participation in the concert was an excellent way for him to begin building his relation ship with the community i think president farrington's reading was a good way for him to introduce himself to the lehigh b&w photo by danielle frikker members of the lehigh
