the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 04 tuesday september 15 1998 all the lehigh news first cops in shops deter drinking by nick mathers news writer bethlehem police have instituted a new program with the cooperation of bethlehem area liquor stores and bars intend ed to make purchasing liquor more difficult for anyone under the age of 21 the program called cops in shops positions undercover officers posing as store employees inside and outside liquor stores to combat the use of fake id's and to prevent adults from buying alcohol for underage drinkers participating stores are displaying signs on their windows and cold-cases that read warning police officer may be posing as store employee police believe that signs will act as an effective deterrent on their own according to a press release issued by the bethlehem police there will be no regular schedule for an officer being stationed at a certain location instead officer assignments will be dealt with on an indi vidual store-to-store basis the beauty of the program is its flexibility lieutenant fred mill said undercover officers may be in any store at any time penalties for anyone apprehended by the police are con sistent with pennsylvania law underage persons caught trying to purchase alcohol can receive a fine for as much as 500 and the fine for adults who purchase alcohol for young adults can be up to 300 store owners are very excited about this program for years we've been fighting these issues alone rich laubach of the pennsylvania state liquor store said we are very enthusiastic about tackling these problems in partnership with law enforcement the student reaction is less than enthusiastic about the merits of the program the program will work to catch kids from drinking but it won't stop kids from wanting to drink andrew eckstein 01 said many students agree that the program won't really put an effective stop to underage drinking i think the program will work to catch underage drinkers but kids can still get stuff from people who are 21 erik wittman 01 said on paper the program probably sounds like a good idea but a lot of students are buying through alternative sources and aren't going to get caught vicky hagnevik 00 said some students believe the police should use their time for other purposes cops should have better things to do but i guess it's the risk you take if you're underage pete massa 01 said people who are over 21 also think the program has its faults i think the use of deceptive tactics in law enforcement are highly unfair to the general public joe tittermary 98 said the program which began city wide on aug 28 will con tinue indefinitely with officers assigned during an extended period of and economics prepares for the future faculty members from each col lege as well as undergraduate and graduate students have recently convened to begin the search for a new dean of the college of business and economics ron yoshida dean of the college of education has been appointed chairman of the committee which will conduct the search on a region al national and international level to seek the most qualified candidate for the job we are looking for someone who is able to offer new ideas so we can grow as a university yoshida said this person must have a good sense of the academic discipline within the college and know what skills lehigh students need to sue ceed in the business world we also want someone who can work with business corporations and alumni as well as faculty and students he said the current dean patti t ota was originally appointed as acting dean a temporary position during the 1997-98 school year ota will complete her term at the end of this school year and retain her position as vice provost the committee is still in the beginning stages of development and as soon as an advertisement for the position has met the approval of committee members it will be distributed to the campus via e-mail other faculty and staff members as well as students in the college of business and economics will be able to voice their opinions and provide input to committee members during meetings throughout the year we will go about this very aggressively by sending out letters and inquiring through other people about who would be a good candi date for the job yoshida said i will expect them to make a strenuous effort to include women and minorities in the process and to be cognizant of the needs of both the college and university nelson markley provost and vice president of academic affairs said in a memo he recently distributed the committee's goal is to present markley with a list of candidates by april 1 1999 with the intent that the new dean will begin his or her term at lehigh next summer we will look for the best lead ership for the success of the college in improving the future of lehigh yoshida said when we do well the university does well : the
