the unknown white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 03 friday september 17 1999 all the lehigh news first class of 2000 unveils its numbers on uc lawn by david elliott news writer the class of 2000 celebrated its seniori ty by unveiling its numbers across the front lawn of the university center monday the ceremonies began at approximate ly 11:45 a.m after a lunch of pizza on the front steps of the uc approximately 60 students staff and fac ulty members stood in the parking lot of the uc as the event commenced danielle frikker 00 the senior class gift chair was the first to speak after her short greeting frikker spoke about the importance of the senior gift this year's senior class will be contin uing a tradition that dates back to 1928 frikker said jason clemens 00 president of the class of 2000 was the next to ascend the podium his speech reflected on his experiences as a freshman clemens also spoke about some of the changes he has experienced here i applaud lehigh's incessant efforts to improve student life clemens said the final speaker before the unveiling was president farrington i'm supposed to ask you to give money and i'm supposed to do it with elegance farrington said and reminded the senior class of their obligations upon graduation you now have to be fanatically loyal farrington said at the closing of his speech the senior class officers climbed the grass hill after the class officers posed for several pictures the numbers were uncovered b&w photo by wring day the class of 2000 unveiled its numbers on the lawn of the uc monday president farrington attended as well as class of 2000 president jason clemens and senior class gift chair danielle frikker who spoke about the importance of the class gift good scholar election finds funds for cancer research student organizations set to nominate candidates for annual research drive and dedication by well little news writer the 10th annual zeta psi good scholar election which will begin in the next few weeks encourages all campus organizations to prepare their candidates candidates must have a 3.25 cumulate grade point average and will be selected from fraternities sororities and other academic clubs on campus they will work for their organization to raise money for cancer research by collect ing votes which cost 1 the candidates can solicit votes from anyone including family friends alumni and businesses the elections are from nov 7-21 and during that time the candidates can raise money by collecting 1 votes through fundraisers and at various voting booths around campus there is a booth at the ulrich student center the west lobby on the second floor of the university center and a new booth locat ed at the atrium in rauch business center at the end of the election the three can didates with the highest number of votes and the organizations they represent will be awarded the organization with the first place can didate will receive 1,000 and the candi date will receive an airline ticket for any where in the united states the second place organization will receive 500 and the second place candidate will receive four gift certificates for the manner house inn the third place organization will receive 250 and the third place candidate will receive gift certificates for bethlehem sporting goods and the university bookstore if a member of zeta psi wins the elec tions the prize money for that organization will go directly to cancer research and the candidate's prize must be declined dr alvin cohen a retired professor of economics is the treasurer of the good scholar election foundation it's an attempt to stimulate interest by providing prizes cohen said none of the prize money comes out of the funds being raised for cancer research the prizes are paid for by the 100 can didate registration fee which also goes toward the cost of the banners and other promotional materials that are placed around campus to inform students the elec tion is taking place in the nine years that the good scholar election has taken place over 110,000 has been raised last year there were 55 candidates from 53 campus organizations the total amount of last year's contribu tions was 33,250 compared to the first year's earnings of 5,681 voting irregularities are commonplace during the elections cohen said last year at a planning meeting you're welcome to buy the election cohen said it's nothing to be ashamed of the cancer research mile another facet of the good scholar election will be held the week of elections on sunday nov 7 named by former university president peter likins the walk starts at the top of the hill at alpha phi sorority winds down to the rathbone dining hall over to packer avenue and continues west ending at delta sigma phi fraternity it's been a yearly tradition cohen said even if it's snowing or raining it doesn't matter we walk every year the good scholar election is dedicated to the memory of someone involved with the university who has died of cancer last year it was dedicated to kenton lerch 97 of delta sigma phi fraternity who developed a very severe case of cancer that took his life in six months this year the program is dedicated to s arthur schachter a former adjunct profes sor at the center for business and communication services schachter also worked for bethlehem steel jeremy corkhill 00 fraternity public relations chair of zeta psi and the person responsible for the organization of this year's good scholar election has been working hard to figure out new ways for candidates to raise money one addition to this year's elections is the third voting booth at the atrium of rauch business center this will give more people an opportunity to vote we figured that off-campus students don't get to the university center or ulrich very much corkhill said corkhill is also looking for ways to get the entire campus and local community members involved all the money raised goes directly toward cancer research at the lehigh valley chapter of the american red cross this will attract more people from the see scholar page 6 hhhm^ihhhhhhi â– lehigh football meets
