little news writer turkish community members and immediate families were not directly affected by the quake turkish students are joining with the global union the office of international education and the lehigh valley chapter of the american red cross to raise money for the survivors of the earthquake in izmit turkey bill hunter assistant dean of students and the director of the global union was involved in starting the efforts for relief the support from faculty students and staff has been tremendous hunter said immediately after the izmit earthquake on aug 17 the global union mobilized to help both the turkish students at lehigh and the victims of the earthquake as quick ly as possible a specific donation account has been created for the turkey victims which makes people feel more comfortable i know that all the money i get here ends up helping people in turkey hunter said it's a rare occurrence where the university works with the community to raise money for an international crisis over 15,000 was raised in just the last week with the entire community donating checks ranged from 5 to 5,000 any money the red cross receives is sent to the red cross in washington and then to the red cross in turkey when it reaches tyirkey it is targeted to the greatest needs at the time jane george is the director of develop ment at the lehigh valley chapter of the red cross it also puts cash into the economy to jump start it again george said that's why the american red cross prefers to deal in cash there are 57 turkish students at lehigh most originally from istanbul which is only 56 miles away from izmit because only 22 of those 57 students were on campus at the time of the earth quake hunter said the global union was initially unsure whether any of those stu dents were injured in the quake however none of the remaining 35 were immediately affected everyone made it back and no one lost any immediate family hunter said it was quite surprising hunter said that lehigh is offering emer gency funding for turkish students to pur chase plane tickets to return to their country cem gurkan 01 president of both the turkish student union and the international club at lehigh is very pleased with the out come so far the day of the earthquake gurkan was still in istanbul no one was hurt but gurkan and his family slept outside the night of the earth quake fearing the aftershocks might cause more damage in the days after the earthquake gurkan and his family loaded pick up trucks with food and water to help out relatives in izmit everybody was active he said there were ferries travelling from istanbul to izmit every 1 5 minutes to carry food water and supplies donated by local citizens all of the people nearby helped out immediately my initial reaction was slower than it was supposed to be gurkan said at first it was devastation but the bonding between people was great gurkan came back to lehigh a week before class started in order to contact the international office at lehigh and also the central moravian church in bethlehem about providing help for the victims ay din eralp 01 a member of the turkish student union also experienced the devastation firsthand it was horrible eralp said we didn't loose anyone in the family thank god i'm really happy that everyone is helping the success of the efforts of both the uni versity and the community to provide help to the earthquake victims will be published in the new york division of the hurriyete one of the largest turkish newspapers now almost a month after the quake the donations continue to arrive there is a direct local impact that peo ple don't realize means something to their lives hunter said he added the red cross is the best con tact for donations we're a minor player writer the end of an era exhibit at zoellner arts center which is running from aug 18 to oct 31 is a selection of photographs by joe elliott a local photographer that shows the artistic side of steel making the exhibit is a tribute to the city of bethlehem and the local industry elliott's photographs were taken from 1993 to 1998 when bethlehem steel was already well past its prime in photographing the steel mills after they had been abandoned elliott's concern was to create an homage to a form of art that is now practically obsolete not to give a historical presentation of the era of
