with film series kurosawa's legacy lives on in a mini-versity program dedicated to his award-winning films in an effort to introduce the lehigh com munity to the work of akira kurosawa renowned as one of the greatest most influ ential filmmakers of the 20th century a film series is being shown as a mini-univer sity course this year's international film series began sept 14 with the 1950 film rashomon and will conclude dec 7 with the 1991 film rhapsody in august all of the kurosawa films are shown tuesday nights at 8 p.m in maginnes hall's world view room or room 490 each viewing is followed by an optional discus sion session in total 11 kurosawa films will be shown including rashomon the idiot seven samurai the lower depths throne of blood the hidden fortress yojimbo kagemusha ran tkiru and rhapsody in august each will be accompanied by subtitles the kurosawa film series is not a public showing rather a non-credit mini-versity course it is designed as such because inter national films draw limited though eager audiences on a typical tuesday night six to 15 people attend including a group of regulars recently the majority of viewers have con sisted of lehigh students johanna brams an instructional technol ogy specialist from the international multimedia resource center explained the selection process for the film series we wanted to offer people the opportu nity to see international films which they can't readily see otherwise in this area brams said the initial fee for signing up for the entire mini-university course was 16.00 as of oct 5 students have been allowed to view a film for 2.00 however after two films lehigh stu dents must register for the course at a mini mum roster registration fee of 5.00 which allows them to see three films and partici pate in the three subsequent post-viewing discussions those wishing to watch the movies who are not affiliated with lehigh must register for the entire film series at a pro rated price of 2.00 per film and are not permitted to participate in the 5.00 sam pling program the films were chosen for this year's international film series because kurosawa passed away in september 1988 brams commented on a u.s trend toward cultural isolation and explained that lehigh students should open their minds to international culture film is one of the easiest ways to immerse yourself in a foreign culture with out actually going there brams said according to brams the audiences have responded favorably to the kurosawa films there have been many comments about how several of the films foreshadow west ern films that the audience has seen and of course much praise as to the imagery inher ent in the films brams said kurosawa's films are based on the tal ents of many cultures he often used japanese folklore as a base and many of his works relied upon classic western literature for example ran to be shown on nov 16 is based on william shakespeare's play king lear other kurosawa films have their origins in the works of the russian author dostoy evsky as well as in the detective stories of the 19405 interestingly enough the flow of inspira tion turned out to be a two-way street because many western filmmakers have based their work on kurosawa when george lucas created the star wars series he had kurosawa's the hidden fortress in mind kurosawa known by journalists as the emperor of celluloid was very involved in many of the aspects of film-making not only did he direct his movies he also edited each of the portions the day after they were shot he did this in an effort to refrain from having to make last minute decisions part of what makes kurosawa's work different is the eight month preparation that preceded each film actors were given time to analyze their characters and to master their roles in a 1993 interview with fred marshall kurosawa said when you make a film you are one with the main character in the film laughing crying suffering together that is film rashomon was awarded the gran prix at the 1951 venice festival the first time a japanese film had won an international prize of this stature kurosawa transformed japanese cinema bringing it from the local stage to the world he must therefore be credited with cre ating an opening for other japanese direc tors to present their work to an appreciative world-wide audience nato conference stresses
