the lehigh camera club will hold the second in its current semester series of photographic shooting sessions thursday april 25 at 7:30 p m in the base ment of drown hall at that time richard fuehrer will perform his magic act for the benefit of the photographers club members will be expected to give the magician extra prints of each of the pic tures taken during the perform ance photo-flood lights will be provided by the club the first semester shooting session of the club was held on sunday march 31 the results of which are now on exhibition in the university library the camera club expects to use the pictures to make up future photographic salon exhibitions new building to be built by alumni drown hall facilities to be improved soon the april 3rd meeting of arca dia was highlighted by a report by allen j goodman president of arcadia that the unsatisfactory situation which has long existed at drown hall is going to be taken care of and that through the eff orts of alumni a new building will be built north of drown hall the improvements at drown hall which mr goodman mention el include reading room lights janitor service and a coke ma chine mr goodman appointed jon epstein and john hendricks to make arrangements for the latter the janitorial service will be from 1:00 to 5:00 o'clock on sunday af ternoons and till 10:00 o'clock in the evening on all other days in addition to these improvements arcadia passed a motion to pur chase a new combination radio phonograph as soon as they be come available after the meeting had been call ed to order and the minutes had been read and approved president goodman welcomed arcadia's new faculty advisor dr herbert m diamond head of the department of economics and sociology honor system discussed the group then heard a short talk by sly sherbeeny who had been invited at the previous meet ing to submit his views on an hon or system during his talk he brought out several pertinent points among them are 1 the students under the pres ent system are treated like chil dren 2 the university should honor and respect the opinions of the students in this matter 3 the honor system would prove to be an opportunity for students to not only govern them selves but also to give them the mature status of adults and would better help them to face life and future social responsibil ity 4 all faculty committees should include some student members following this mr goodman made two announcements first that the town council had reor ganized and would be represented in arcadia secondly that it had been decided not to enter an inter collegiate bridge tournament due to the fact that the intercollegiate playoff occurs during house-party weekend summer semester a discussion was then held con cerning a suggestion that there be an open forum for the purpose of deciding about compulsory sum mer semesters it was finally de cided that this would be impracti cal and the arcadia members came to the conclusion that gov continued on page 4 dorms to hold own dance in grace rounding out the houseparty weekend will be an informal dance held by the interdormitory coun cil on saturday evening april 27 in grace hall all lehigh men their guests faculty members and their wives are cordially invited it was announced by the i d coun cil at a meeting last friday even ing there will be no admission charge denny moore chairman of the dance committee said that ar rangements were being made with a philadelphia booking agent to secure a band for the evening the council also announced that as in the past dates of dorm men will be housed on the upper floors of the various houses brow n & w hite leigh university chapel services . • • there will be sunday afternoon services in the lehigh university chapel every sunday at 4:30 p.m and the student body is cordially invited to attend these services each sunday also every wednes day morning at 7:30 a.m communion services are held in the chapel bethlehem pa wednesday april 10 1946 vol liii — no 19 glen w harmeson price 5 cents lehigh to play host at debate on thursday lehigh will play host to six pennsylvania colleges in a com bined debate and discussion this thursday evening april 11 in the browsing room of the library two events will highlight the agenda for the evening the first a debate with the women's debat ing team of pennsylvania state college supporting the affirmative side of the free trade question and lehigh upholding the nega tive the second a panel discus sion of argentine american rela tions with cedar crest and lafay ette speaking for argentina and moravian college for women and muhlenberg giving the american side of the question the meeting will be open to the public and all lehigh men are in vited to attend and air their views on these two vital subjetcs add ing special interest to the program will be a citizen of argentina who will be cedar crest's speaker in the panel discussion if discusses chaperones for dance committee supporting anti-hazing policy an important meeting of the interfraternity council was held last monday night in drown hall president ben hoffacker called the meeting to order and asked for the representative of each house to so signify these representa tives were made permanent for the coming semester chaperone rules the coming if ball was discuss ed and money for tickets from the fraternities is due on or before april 15 tickets are now on sale at the supply bureau captain mcglonahan will be another chap erone at the affair ben announced the policy as to the house chap erones as approved by dean cong don the cost to each house will be 25 and any faculty wife is eli gible names of these two chaper ones are to be in by the 22nd of this month the university will pay the chaperone and each house will consequently be billed by the university the chaperone must be in the house at all times hell week the question of hazing during fraternity hell weeks was next discussed and the council is com pletely behind the university re gulations regarding hazing there will be no hazing whatsoever and any house caught using this me thod during hell week will have its charter removed by action of the council this policy was ap proved and assured by the coun cil , faculty gives students break in a special meeting on monday afternoon the faculty decided to try the experiment this spring of dispensing with classes for under graduates on the saturday of houseparty weekend one of the compelling reasons for doing this is the housing situation dispens ing with saturday classes will per mit dormitory students who are not participating in the house party activities to go home or away for the weekend thus mak ing their rooms available to dor mitory students who are attending the houseparty and whose rooms are being occupied by lady-guests it will also make it possible for students living in town but not at home to house their out of town lady-guests in the dormitories in addition there are two or three fraternity groups that are without housing facilities for their guests they too will be able to have their guests stay in the dormitories glen harmeson resigns post for new duties will leave in june for wabash college glen w harmeson director of athletics at lehigh university re signed to become head football coach at wabash college craw fords ville indiana he will as sume his new duties at the end of lehigh's current semester in june only recently returned from naval service where he held the rank of lieutenant commander harmeson came to lehigh in 1934 as head football and basketball coach and in 1939 became director of athletics succeeding the late colonel nelson a kellogg who retired at that time in april 1942 harmeson accept ed a commission in the navy and was granted a leave of absence by the university he returned to le high in december 1945 and was in strumental in the selection of bill leckonby lehigh's new football coach who is currently conducting spring practice in announcing harmeson's resig nation e kenneth smiley univer ity vice president said during the twelve years of his assocication with the university mr harmeson has made significant contributions to the welfare of athletics at le high he has assembled at the university a coaching staff which is conspicuous for its excellence of technical training and for its ability to stimulate enthusiastic response to the challenge of com petition he has set and maintained high standards ror the conduct of the individual and of the group in all sports he has uncompromis ingly supported university stand ards of scholastic achievement for all students lehigh releases mr harmeson with regret and with confidence that his personal quali ties and professional competence will assure success in his new re sponsibilities bob chester to play here the coming if ball is bringing two bands to lehigh campus the weekend of april 26 to 28 bobby sherwood the featured band was covered in last week's issue bob chester will be the second band at this gala affair bob chester attended the uni versity of dayton and later detroit university where he won five var sity letters his skill as a pitcher led to offers from major league baseball clubs but his interest in music was even greater while at dayton bob became a close friend of tommy dorsey and a follower of the dorsey brothers bix bei derbecke louis armstrong and other jazz men makes music life work determining to make music his life work chester helped pay his way through college by getting a job with russ morgan's orchestra then playing at the capitol thea tre in detroit this job led to his career as a tenor sax man during which he played with paul specht ben pollack irving aaronson and the late ben bernie wishing to lead his own band chester assem bled a group of inexperienced mu sicians trained them and stretch ed a two weeks engagement at the detroit athetic club to an 8 months stay chester first determined to lead a band as a result of a jam session in his college room by members of bix beiderbecke's band then play ing in detroit bob had invited beiderbecke's band then playing in detroit bob had invited bei derbecke tommy and jimmy dor sey gene krupa and don mur ray for a session after the band had finished its evening work the session which did not begin until 4 a m awakened not only the campus but most of the surround continued on page 3 civil engineers hear of war survey the lehigh valley section of the american society of civil engin eers heard lt col i e madsan at their monthly meeting last mon day night in packard lab lt col madsan gave an illustrated lecture about his interesting experiences in the china-burma-india theater of operations his mission in the cbi was to survey the route for a pipe line from assam india to kumming china over the hima layian mountains this survey was a top secret during the war to make the survey lt col madsan had to travel through the jungles of northern burma and over the hump on a route of six hundred miles the trip took sev eral months during which time the survey party was behind jap anese lines due to the relatively sudden finish of the war the pipe line was never completed but was laid over the ledo road instead fuehrer to perform for camera club
