there are a number of strategic values that need to be balanced while creating the new site one value is branding which identi fies the site for visitors another is impact and news value designed to attract visi tors to the site additionally audience and community which encompasses the web page's abili ty to successfully meet the needs of visi tors to the site must be considered last is a measure of competitiveness which relies upon attractive features com bined with cutting-edge technology until now the plans and layout were confined to lehigh students and faculty by requiring user identification to enter the site at www.lehigh.edu-indesign/preview this was done so that other competitive universities could not look at the preview to get ideas for enhancing their own web pages while planning the new site lehigh retained the consulting firm of lipman heame the firm conducted a full web-audit an extensive research project that was designed to find the needs and wants of users also they derived successful traits from the pages of other schools from this study they were able to devel op the main areas of importance to enhance lehigh's page their goal was to produce a savvy site for key external figures such as alumni prospec tive students and parents as well as lehigh students by making the site user-friendly and actively updating information when developing the plans two home pages were designed one page was for off-campus users and one was for on campus members of the university making it easier for site users to access what is most important to them although most responses to the plan have been positive ticho said there have been a few concerns voiced some lehigh web users worry that the transition between old and new will be rapid making it difficult to adjust ticho said the move will be gradual as pieces of the improved site are added from this week until the middle of november ticho said it's not going to be this pull of-a-bandage quick switch changes to the current web page will occur slowly to create a smoother transition for users a link to lehigh's new web site was implemented yesterday evening putting into effect the first phase of a project to revamp the manner m which the university commu nicates with constituent communities ron ticho assistant vice president of university relations said the plans for the new site have been under way since august 1998 we saw an opportunity to leverage tech nology that has been developed to commu nicate with key constituents including alumni prospective students and parents ticho said excellence by cynthia crookston news writer president gregory farrington said that dean of the pc rossin college of engineering and applied science john chen presented a challenge to us all with his view of lehigh and the faculty students and parents that make up the its family at the 121 st founder's day ceremony ocl 7 in his speech chen spoke of a model faculty member who teaches enthusiastically mentors students m and out of class receives excellent student evaluations has the ability to make students think and earns awards from the university the nation and the international community this hypothetical faculty member indeed exists and is currently on the faculty at lehigh chen said chen's speech highlighted the past and present lehigh the main point of his speech however was to address what should and hopefully will be the future of lehigh regardless of whether we emphasize one discipline or another remove disciplines or add new disciplines to our curriculum it seems clear to me that the star by which lehigh should set its compass is m two words academic excellence chen said chen believes lehigh students should graduate with knowledge and humanistic and moral character but also should be nurtured to develop their intellectual character we want our students to not just answer questions but be discerning of the right questions to be asked chen said we want put on a fashion show m celebration of diwali the indian festival of lights friday night world to me to see everyone together it was great to see the crowd made up of a variety of cultures the audience's response to the performance was over whelmingly positive summer hading 99 attended diwali for my first experience to indian culture i thought it was beautiful harling said nairali shah 03 a member of the indian student dancing speeches singing and a fashion show wowed 250 people at diwali 99 an indian festival of lights at zoellner arts center friday night diwali a festival celebrating the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness illuminates indian culture on the 13th day of the dark two weeks m the month of asvin october november it is the most widely celebrated of all hindu festivals m india and commemorates lord rama's return to his kingdom ayodhya after completing his 14 year exile the indian students association organized presented and sponsored the festival the mustard and cheese drama society office of international education lacocca institute global union and phi beta delta also helped bill hunter associate dean and director of the global union was pleased with the performance it is great to have organizations internationalizing lehigh's campus hunter said everything is student run and the stu dents from the indian student association have put m a tremendous number of hours organizing it and getting ready for tonight's performance student involvement could clearly be seen from the begin ning through the end of the show the masters of ceremonies pragati gupta 01 and anshul sharma 00 introduced all of the acts and helped put the crowd at ease with their witty banter undergraduate and graduate students from the indian student association participated m all of the acts one solo dance called hothon main aise vath featured alumnus sheila vyas 95 student volunteers helped out m the fashion show which was the last act of the night eshita bakshi.'oo the coordinator of diwali 99 and the president of global union performed one dance entitled pushpanjili she was happy with the turnout for the event it was definitely a
