members of the graduate student council gsc contributed to the preser vation of the michael heller homestead m hellertown early saturday morning the graduate students did general maintenance and cleaning m the 18th century historic main house helping the saucon valley conservancy m its quest to get the area registered nationally as a historic site when the gsc arrived ginnie blocker the volunteer coordinator at the conservancy greeted them with blueber ry muffins coffee and orange juice soon after the graduate students fanned out to each of the rooms of the historic house removing cobwebs moving old furniture dusting ceilings and window sills and dis mantling a large copy machine blocker has often recruited volunteers from lehigh and said she was glad to to do it she said it's a good deed kind of thing but we also want to show people that the gsc is not an organization that's out to help itself we're out there giving back to the community graduate student eric frey said he was glad to help out for half the day he feels it is important for graduate students to get involved because he was not active for most of his college career i'm just starting to get into it he said last semester i wasn't too involved but this semester i'll proba bly do more it's a good way for grad students to meet each other and to do projects like this mathematics graduate student and travel grants officer for the gsc dan taylor explained why he thinks volun teer work is necessary you have to do more than what you're expected to do sometimes taylor said or else you're just kind of going through the motions have another team come m and help the work lehigh students do is not glamorous she said but it's necessary for the upkeep of the house since we're trying to get the site registered general maintenance is required but we can't afford to pay someone to come m here and clean amanda tyson vice-president of the gsc said that working for the conser vancy was a service project the council had been interested m for some time we were looking for service pro jects m the area and we had heard that other groups from lehigh had volun teered here before tyson said we really wanted to do some work at a conservancy and the saucon one was closer than others tyson said that although this was the first service project the gsc had done she hoped it would be something that the council female body and the amount of pornography rape and sexual abuse that we have m this country he said cordelle also was inspired when he noticed how people would refuse to look at deformed or handicapped women when passing them on the street if we deny normal human curiosity by not making eye contact with a person then we make them not human cordelle said i want everyone to see that these are real people cordelle said his pictures seem to have a strong effect on many female viewers three times women have come up to me after seeing the exhibit and have told me that after seeing my pictures they decided not to get breast implants he said if i can have that kind of effect on people then it is all worth it rebekah hoch 01 got more out of the exhibit than she expected i thought that it was going to be typical nude photographs but i think there was a purpose to these hoch said cordelle said that men often have a different reaction i'd say that 25 to 50 percent of men that come into this room are very uncom fortable cordelle said an exhibit focusing on women's self image titled the century photo exhibit was displayed m the kenner theater at the ulrich student center on tuesday and wednesday as part of the week-long activities for eating disorders awareness week the display featured nude photographs by photographer frank cordelle of women at various stages m their lives photos ranged from an infant emerging from the womb to a 94-year-old woman among the photographs were pictures of anorexic and obese women women missing limbs women with scars due to abuse and women with one breast as a result of cancer and a mastectomy accompanying each photograph was a statement by the subject regarding her feelings on nudity and the female body cordelle began his photo exhibit as a response to society's views on the female form he said much of his desire to do the project came after visiting europe where he saw that people were much more comfortable with the human body than m the united states i think that there is a direct link justin woodruff 03 was uneasy at the exhibit i found it very disturbing woodruff the pictures gave me shivers the lehigh office of counseling and psychological services and the department of women's studies sponsored the exhibit which has been seen all over the country lehigh was the second stop m a two month college tour
