they were getting into did they know the rules and deadlines that go along with the lottery did they know that available spaces are unbalanced favoring the higher male population at the university maybe some of them did but many of these upperclassmen were simply looking for a place to live and as a result of limited choices found themselves involved m a contest they knew little about at lehigh most students do not live m dorms after their freshman year that means that rising sophomores must begin considering their housing options for the following year as early as their first semester there are of course the fraternity and sorority living options off-campus housing is another possibility and for everyone else there is the housing lottery those who are unsure of their future m the greek life or who have not yet explored the off-campus possibilities are forced to participate m the lottery this system of perks and pitfalls serves as a method of select b&w photo by melissa brown trembley park one of lehigh's upperclassmen apartment complexes is conveniently located across from the university center and next to johnson hall university aims to increase campus safety by alexandra goldmacher news writer the university is looking to adress growing concerns of the safety of pedes trians walking around campus and the living conditions of students living m residence halls fraternities and sorori ties located on-campus the university facilities and planning department has retained the consulting group sasaki and associates to look at the campus as a whole including buildings and spaces and to make suggestions for possible improvements associate vice president of facilities planning and renovations anthony l corallo said campus meetings will be held tomorrow and thursday during which sasaki and associates will dis cuss the progress they are making with the campus and facilities development plan which aims for completion m june sasaki and associates is working on renovating the campus and analyzing space housing parking and pedestrian problems among other things sunday night associate director of residential services ozzie breiner explained that if problems do occur m residence halls lehigh does not maintain insurance to cover damaged personal property but his office will make sure the room is repaired and refurbished while pipes have burst m residen tial areas flooding is by no means an epidemic on this campus the university works to ensure that problems regarding safety are taken care of m advance breiner also spoke of the universi ty's handling of the fire policy i think we have a very solid policy regarding fire he said we are very deliberate m our system checks we work closely with the bethlehem fire marshall when asked whether the recent fire at seton hall university m south orange n.j has m any way influ enced lehigh policy yozzi explained it hasn't yet he said we follow standard proce dures for fire safety and prevention at this time i don't know if there are any changes m the works these projects have been m the making for some time and improve ments have already begun special attention is being directed to taylor street where drivers have been ignoring the 15 mph speed limit that applies to all campus roads it is especially dangerous at the pedestrian crossings near rauch business center taylor gym and the newman center vendors and service providers are no longer allowed to park on taylor street while making deliveries university police are expected to be more stringently enforcing traffic and parking laws in an effort to improve conditions lehigh is having another safety aware ness campaign this year we're going to try to maintain awareness express our concerns and to request cooperation john smeaton the vice provost for student affairs said he explained that the next phase will consist of increased enforcement of uni versity policies and continued education awareness is also a major issue on campus associate dean of residence life david yozzi said my impression is that we ensure that students are educated about how to take care of themselves during emer gencies such as fire or flooding he said the gryphons are trained to help or assist residents m situations that would be potentially harmful gryphon erin rebele 02 was the first person to arrive when a pipe on the third floor of taylor college burst flooding rooms a hall and a lounge on jan 17 the day before classes began a taylor resident came to her door and said he could hear water rushing into his neighbor's room rebele first called other gryphons and then emergency maintenance fortunately for the student he had taken his computer home over break jennifer depierro 01 encountered a similar situation when the heater m her room m kappa alpha theta sorority started spewing hot water when she tried to adjust the setting hot water came spurting out and there was no way to turn it off she said depierro said no one was
