news editor u.s senator rick santorum r-pa announced thursday that the ipd pro gram is bringing m the money as the department of labor awarded it 600,000 for its highly-acclaimed program ipd trains students for careers m industry by teaching every aspect of it — design engineering and business lehigh secured the award derived from funds collected m the fiscal year 2000 consolidated appropriations act with santorum's assistance santorum explained why he thought lehigh and its program deserved the money today's graduates must be prepared to excel m a highly-competitive global market that rewards innovation and effi ciency santorum said by integrating students from a wide variety of disci plines including arts and sciences engi neering architecture finance and busi ness lehigh university's ipd program prepares america's top students to suc cessfully design manufacture and sell products m our global economy i am extremely pleased that this funding will enable lehigh to expand this program as it is currently the only one of its kind m the nation he said lehigh hopes to use the award to increase enrollment m the ipd program make changes m it create an education al model for other universities upgrade teaching facilities and ipd laboratories and examine the program's benefit to graduates joining the workforce accord ing to provost nelson markley he said the award was encouraging this generous support from the department of labor is especially grat ifying because it reinforces our belief that this innovative program addresses a critical need m industry today markley said our ipd students learn how technical product plans must be integrated with business plans they learn to communicate across disci plines and they learn to work effec tively m teams these are skills that will serve them well after graduation santorum agreed with markley ipd is teaching the young people here at lehigh how to turn out new quality products and market them the ipd program should be a model for interdisciplinary programs at other schools santorum said the program was created as a response to american corporations need to hire college graduates who are prepared to work m groups to design manufacture and sell products world photo courtesy of media relations president gregory farrington announced that harold a hap wagner chairman of the board and chief executive officer of air products and chemicals inc will give the com mencement speech at commencement exercises on jan 9 approximately 400 students are expected to receive their degrees since 1994 wgner has served as a member of lehigh's board of trustees and is a member of its executive student affairs and public affairs com mittees also he is actively involved with the kids peace national council for kids and is chairman of the dorothy rider pool health care trust wagner received an honorary doc torate of engineering from lehigh m may 1998 he earned a b.s m mechanical engineering from stanford university m 1958 and an m.b.a from harvard university m 1963 phi beta kappa inducts 29 scholars by amanda henry news editor twenty-nine students were initiated into phi beta kappa the united states oldest undergraduate honors organiza tion thursday m the osbourne room of the university center roland k yoshida president of lehigh's phi beta kappa council and dean of the college of education gave a speech entitled a lifetime with phi beta kappa a personal view other fac ulty m attendance included vice president of the council and physics pro fessor w beall fowler executive secretary and political science professor richard k matthews treasurer senior associate dean and economics professor arthur e king and executive secretary professor and associate dean emeritus james b hobbs the honorees all with senior standing were lori amadei hrvoje benko rebekah berry daniel brockman nicole canuso-bedesem sharon chinthrajah keith coyle james s cybulski vanita dharan keith edward dombrowski peter j dorazio mohamed el-naggar gina gencarelli christopher william jensen ryan johnson neha korde nathan layer sachin mehta joseph metzger theodore mielczarek jennifer o'brien james prager jennifer scott dana sepe kevin shmelzer tara troy ariana vazquez matthew vickery and audrey zinchuk phi beta kappa was founded m 1776 at the college of william and mary m williamsbug va it was elected from candidates for degrees m the liberal arts and sci ences usually from the upper tenth of the graduating class in addition to an outstanding record of academic achievement stipulations for
