              members of lehigh's counseling services dean of students office and the lehigh police held a panel presentation and discussion on sexual assault at the university center tuesday the panel discussion was part of sexual assault awareness week which is designed to make students aware of their rights and offer solutions if they are to ever find them selves m a situation where they are the vic tim of sexual assault beth golden assistant director of uni versity counseling and psychological ser vices is trying to help students on campus get assistance as quickly as possible after gorney receives award for excellence m field friday october 29 1999 vol 107 no 13 by noelia cabrera news writer professor of journalism and communication carole m gorney was awarded the public relations society of america's outstanding educator award oct 25 with its individual awards programs the prsa recog nizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of public relations education through college or university teaching the process of choosing a winner is highly selective nominations must be based on several criteria the nomi nee's excellence m teaching research involvement with students and involvement m the profession itself must be properly demonstrated m order to receive the award gorney is an accredited fellow and member of prsa which consists of 18,000 members there are approximate ly 300 fellows inducted per year in 1997 gorney served as president of the prsa philadelphia chapter one of the largest chapters nationwide she was also a member of the accreditation board and served as a voting assembly delegate for three years gorney has directed the public relations curriculum since 1982 m the department of journalism and commu nication she teaches all core public relations courses and other subjects such as broadcast writing and persuasion influence she also helped charter the national award-winning lehigh chapter of the public relations society m 1985 and has since served as an adviser to the club we have a very active chapter on this campus with well photo courtesy of external relations carole gorney professor m the journalism and communication department is the adviser of the lehigh chapter of prsa which she helped charter see gorney page 8 over 50 members this year a record high gorney said due to her efforts and strong will the department initi ated a concentration m public relations gorney is not only active m her department but also devotes her time to other activities on campus from 1996-97 she served as a lehigh faculty master liv ing m brodhead house she has been nominated to serve as vice president of the phi beta delta international honor society for 1999-2000 gorney is also the faculty advisor to lutv a student run organization producing entertainment programming for lehigh's cable channel linda lipko publications coordinator for the journalism and communication department commented on gorney s dedication to all aspects of her job i worked with carole for 14 years and what i observe very keenly is that she gives a tremendous amount of time to her students lipko said she has an open door policy she is a firm but fair professor whom the students respect students make a point of keeping m touch with her long after they graduate she is well liked and cares deeply about her students lipko said in addition to being invited to give presentations at many conferences m the united states gorney was asked to speak at universities outside of the united states m beijing and chongqing gorney lived m china from 1991-1992 and 1997-1998 as a fulbright senior scholar she was awarded a grant to panel lecture highlights sexual awareness week by will little news writer see assault page 8 golden said the university counseling service has two roles the first role is education and preven tion the center is responsible for develop ing and organizing sexual assault awareness week as well as going to resi dence halls and classes throughout the year to further educate students the second is response university coun seling services offers individual and group counseling and a 24-hour on
