graduates hear dr marshall the brotherhood of man is one of man's last passionate necessi ties dr roy k marshall direc tor of fels planetarium of frank lin institute told graduates at lehigh university's midyear com mencement sunday feb 24 and urged them to do their part toward the realization of a better world speaking on what the atomic bomb means to you dr mar shall pointed out that whether the bomb will be used for destruction or harnessed to do useful work depends on us and declared that peacetime applications of atomic energy can begin as soon as we stop thinking of atomic bombs and think instead in terms of atomic energy stating that the real peace can come only through world cooper ation the speaker said what we have to have is a true amalgama tion of countries in the sense that our country is made up of several states and advocated also the establishment of a higher sov ereignty that would supersede national sovereignties in matters that affect the welfare of many nations 32 get degrees during the exercises twenty one undergraduates and six grad uate degress were conferred by e kenneth smiley university vice president dean wray h congdon announced that richard a craig edward diehl and edward man ning had been graduated with highest honors ralph graber and richard thomas smith with high honors and richard greene and harry kern with honors the exercise opened with the traditional academic procession led by the color guard and the rev byron k home pastor of the central moravian church conducted the devotionals dr t edgar shields professor and head of the department of music pre sided at the organ his selections included gothic march by sa lome andante rheinberger and a march by scotson-clark undergraduate degrees award ed include bachelor of arts — james douglas downs of allen town ralph schultz graber east greenville charles gilbert haf ner of bethlehem harry burgess kern of catawissa and john patrick fox tuberty of allen town bachelor of science in business administration — murray dattner blum of scran ton joseph law rence conneen of bethlehem charles hatherly foster of cleve land ohio robert dewey frost of nenmore n v stuart linds ley hammond of maplewood n j john anderon jubell of shaker heights ohio and theodore hyatt niewenhous of hyattsville md bachelor of science in engin eering physics — richard axtell of maplewood n j and richard frank greene of brooklyn n y bachelor of science in civil en gineering—edward lewis diehl of york and allen musgrove continued on page three housing shortage still unsolved the present semester has forced the re-opening of all of lehigh's dormitories and fraternity houses all of these are now filled to ca pacity for almost two years tay lor house and price house have been closed along with a large number of fraternity houses the present enrollment is nearing 1500 and the highest pre-war to tal enrollment was 1750 the diff erence is accounted for by the bethlehem housing shortage very few students live in town as com pared to the numbers in pre-war years at present 988 students re side on the campus in both dorms and fraternity houses the army astp program had requisitioned every dormitory and fraternity house on campus the army occupied these facilities from august 1943 to april 1944 all civilian students during this period resided off campus in either fraternities or rooming houses drinker richards and taylor houses all contained a complete company of men price house and the various fraternity houses each contained part of a company of men there are still traces of evi dence of the army's occupation of lehigh the upper field once beautifully landscaped still shows scars produced by g i shoes in daily drill practice drinker house now badly in need of repainting was reopened almost immediately on the army's departure and since has been continually occupied thus repainting has been imposs ible richards house was repaired before its opening a few semes ters later the university has un dertaken the responsibility of re pairing the fraternity houses which the army occupied and in some instances neglected to repair price house and taylor house were reopened for this present semester reconditioning these houses was started early in jan uary but work was hampered by lack of labor and materials their condition is theoretically improv ing every day work on the var ious fraternity houses reopening this semester has similarly been hampered delta tau delta was the first fraternity on campus to reopen in june 1945 others fol lowed suit and 23rd ball jimmy raye and 15 piece band featured tickets sell for 2.40 at supply bureau rev g bean new chaplain from the office of e kenneth smiley university vice-president came the announcement that the reverend george martin bean has been appointed university chaplain during the leave of ab sence of dr claude gillette beardslee the reverend mr bean assumed his duties on march 1 a graduate of the university of virginia where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1939 he was a student at the virginia theological seminary from 1939 to 1942 and was graduated cum laude with the bachelor of divin ity degree formerly rector of grace church and walker's par ish cismont va the rev mr bean comes to lehigh after com pleting more than 2 years of service as a chaplain in the united states naval reserve holding the rank of lieutenant in addition to his ecclesiastical duties the rev mr bean has taught at st agnes school in alexandria va and has written everal magazine articles he is a member of zeta psi social frater nity the five man committee meeting in the arcadia room yesterday afternoon decided to hold the anual senior ball on saturday evening march 23rd this committee in its initial action for this semester brings back to lehigh one of the university's gala social events tentative plans for the ball include the appointment of the dance committee with dick macadams me j-46 as its chairman and the selection of jimmy raye and his orchestra all of these plans are subject to the approval of the senior class which meets in the drown hall lounge friday afternoon march bth at 4:00 p.m the dance will be semi-formal and will be held in grace hall two weeks from this saturday the band will play continuously from 9:00 til 1:00 since university regulations per mit only one houseparty per sem ester the senior ball will be a saturday night affair leaving the houseparty weekend to the if council sometime at the end of april to those lehigh men who are matriculating for the first time as well as to those lehigh men who are returning from the service a bang up evening is planned — friendly atmosphere — the music of jimmy raye the raye-men appeared at le high two semesters ago and made a smash hit with the crowd lim ited budgets unfortunately made raye's reappearance impossible until this semester the tickets will go on sale on monday of next week at the sup ply bureau and at the arcadia of fice in drown hall the price per couple will be 2.40 tax in cluded harry kohl in charge of the concessions is looking for seven or eight men to assist him on the evening of the dance with the various tasks of ticket taking coat checking and coke sales any men interested in this work should con tact harry on thursday or friday of this week at the psi upsilon house freshmen given their regulations another semester has rolled around and with it has come the largest enrollment of freshmen within the last few years it isn't difficult to single them out these fellows with their schedules and maps who are always reporting to the wrong classes and asking di rections of everyone it has become a tradition here at l u for these neophytes to live up to certain regulations laid down by cyanide these rules aren't for the purpose of insulting individual dignity but are to orientate each new student and acquaint him with his fellow good fellowship is the spirit of these rules and should be accepted with that viewpoint for a better understanding they are as follows 1 lehigh men meeting on the campus should do so with the greeting hello 2 the wearing of the freshman hat seal brown tie and brown continued on page four peace-time rushing fills frat houses visions of the golden days of pre-war activity returned to the campus yesterday when nearly two hundred rushees drifting in and out of drown hall picked up their bids from the various chap ters during the traditional silence period from one to five o'clock symbolic of lehigh spirit the inter-fraternity council hurdled many inconveniences in taking what psi upsilon harry kohl — speaking for ben hoffacker of delta upsilon — described as a big step toward the return to normal the return of former students is expected to close up the ranks university faculty increased by 22 men all departments will have staffs enlarged by professors selected from wide background twenty-two additional appointments to the faculty of lehigh uni versity were announced today by e kenneth smiley university vice president the new men will assume their teaching duties with the opening of the spring semester next week named to teach in the department of mathematics were dr theo dore hailperin assistant professor and salvatore dante bernardi dr herbert kapfel brown and samuel stoner ensor instructors dr hailperin received his b s de ~—"~ — " " gree from the university of mich igan in 1939 in his ph.d from cornell in 1943 and comes to le high from aberdeen proving grounds where he has held the post of mathematician bernardi came here from the university of illinois where he served as a graduate assistant in mathematics he was graduated from yale with a b.s degree in 1941 and took his master of education degree at springfield college in 1943 and his m.s in mathematics at notre dame during the past year dr brown who comes to lehigh from rensselaer polytechnic institute received his b.a degree from wayne university in 1939 and af ter taking graduate work at wayne and the university oi michigan received his ph.d from the latter in 1942 ensor was grad uated from bridgewater college vo and after receiving his a.b degree in 1937 took further grad uate study at the university of virginia university of maryland and duke during the year 1942 43 he held a graduate assistant ship at lehigh in the department of physics dr dean w stebbins dr charles o ahonen dr paul f bartunek and dr peter havas have been appointed to assistant professor ships and richard f greene and morton f kaplon graduate as sistants dr stebbins taught at texas a & m before entering the army where he held the rank of major he received his b.s de gree at montana state college and his ph.d from lowa state dr ahonen came to lehigh from rensselaer where he was an in structor a graduate of wayne university he received his m.s and ph.d at the university of michigan formerly a physicist with the ordnance division na tional bureau of standards dr bartunek took his b.s and m.s at the university of nebraska and his doctorate at the university of michigan dr havas comes to le high from cornell university where he served as an instructor and is a graduate of technische hochschule vienna and holds a doctorate from columbia univer sity greene is a senior at lehigh and will receive his b.s on sun day while kaplon was graduated from lehigh in 1941 and has just been released from army service continued on page two the lehigh collegians the university dance band will hold auditions and a rehearsal on thursday night
