the brown and white lehigh university y s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 36 tuesday march 25 1997 all the lehigh news first mr lehigh draws record crowd by lisa a jones assistant news editor men representing 22 fraternities modeled clothing and showed their various talents to the largest audience in the history of alpha omicron pi sorority's annual mr lehigh contest wednesday night in lower grace hall the sorority sold 700 tickets for the event raising more than 2,000 a major portion of the proceeds will go to alpha omicron pi's primary philanthropy the arthritis research foundation contestants competed in three categories formal wear talent and sportswear or swimwear then the top five finalists went on to a question and answer period timothy shotmeyer 00 representing phi gamma delta fraterni ty won the contest after impersonating the saturday night live comedian chris farley's motivational speaker and maniac routines as his talent in the final round shotmeyer answered the question if you could keep only one article of clothing you currently own and the rest were to be thrown out what would you keep he replied it def initely would be his ramapo high school 95 t-shirt which he was wearing at the time the t-shirt said who's your daddy b w photo by am my lefevre tim shotmeyer 00 won the distinction of becoming mr lehigh 1997 in alpha omicron pi's annual competition choir gives diverse performance by kevin schregel news writer the preview season of the zoellner arts center continued saturday night as the lehigh university choir gave an audi ence of close to 300 the first look at its french tour program the lehigh choir presented a multicultural program that included songs from ireland france hungary and italy among others the evening began with a 16th-century song by claude lejeune from france entitled revecy venir du printemps which means now spring returns the song is a celebra tion of spring the rebirth of the land and love featured in the first selection were michelle asadourian 00 vanessa devett 99 chris landrieu 97 stephen williams assistant professor of music michael d'ambrosio 97 was featured on percussion the second selection was a 12th-century song called planctus subtitled david's lament for saul and jonathan the song featured solos by adam datesman 97 landrieu and joon shin 97 the choir was accompanied on harp by mary ann coppa the final selection of the first half of the performance was a 16th-century song by tomas luis de victoria titled missa o quam gloriosum est regnum victoria used a technique com mon to the 16th century in which he based the majority of the song on one of his previous works in this case his motet o quam gloriosum."the song is religious and offers praise and adoration to god and jesus after a brief intermission the performance continued with a series of french choruses written in 1955 by leonard bernstein the choruses were written as part of the music for jean anouilh's drama of the life of joan of arc the lark the next chorus in the second the court song featured sopranos emily fleck 97 and deborah sacarakis the director of cultural affairs for the zoellner arts center another selection performed that evening was prayer a song written by music professor paul salerni in memory of his father of all of the songs selected for the performance the most well known was the religious song ave maria written by franz biebl the choir members received a generous round of applause after they completed their rendition of praise to the virgin mary the overtones were featured in another segment of the pro gram as they came to the front of the stage to perform without the rest of the choir the overtones performed several songs from the modern era of music some of which were arranged by director and assistant professor ol music stephen sametz the songs included losing my mind by stephen sondheim and let's do delta gamma hosts water events by jennifer o brien news writer lehigh students were able to cheer for the aquatic skills of their favorite sorority or fraternity when delta gamma held its anchor splash in jacobs pool in taylor gymnasium sunday afternoon the anchor splash is an annual event sponsored by delta gamma chapters all over the nation with proceeds benefiting aid to the blind their national philanthropy group fraternities and sororities are invited to enter teams of pledges or active house members to participate in a number of different events dur ing the day each team is required to make a donation of at least 50 and even houses that choose not to participate are able to make a con tribution money is also raised by selling ads to local sponsors and charging a 2 admission fee at the door the anchor splash consists of four different
