alumni return for annual homecoming b&w photo by daphnie sicre joe tittermary 98 tom kivlehan 96 tony maglia 97 kris kantor 98 bill guyla 98 and steve somers 93 relive old times during young alumni tailgates by jordan hyatt news writer lehigh's second annual homecom ing drew a large crowd of alumni to goodman campus saturday where the alumni association held luncheons and assorted family activities before the football game lehigh-lafayette weekend used to be the unofficial homecoming because that was the game graduates came back for said janet tucker associate director of the alumni association this year the alumni association decided to add a variety of activities to the alumni schedule so that the game is not the only attraction one of the newly added events lehigh university was one of the seven sites m the state of pennsylvania to host a broadcast of america's commitment the u.n conference on women one year later saturday afternoon the teleconference celebrated the one-year anniver sary of the u.n women's conference m beijing and was sponsored by the president's interagency council on women a federal organization it was aired from washington d.c via satellite to packard laboratory beginning at 1 p.m i chose lehigh as one of the sites because i thought the conference would coincide nicely with the recent celebration of the 25th anniversary of co-ed education said janice mcelroy the state coordinator of the pro gram for pennsylvania mcelroy a resident of auentown attended the beijing women's conference last year last year's conference and this year's teleconference from washington focused on violence against women women's health issues business opportunities for women and ways to improve the quality of life for women and children the program included a slide show of highlights from the beijing conference the live telecast of the un teleconference and a discussion followed by a ques tion-and-answer session with local experts speakers at the teleconference included first lady hillary clinton u.n ambassador madeleine albright secretary of health and human services donna shalala u.s ambassador for human rights geraldine ferraro and ceo of the ms foundation marie wilson allison weinger 99 attended the broadcast of the conference it was definitely a unique opportunity to see how women are being represented m washington weinger said i'm glad that lehigh students had this opportuni ty presented to them aside from lehigh the other sites broadcasting the teleconference m pennsylvania were scranton reading harrisburg erie philadelphia and pittsburgh see alumni page 4 alumni and their families could partici pate m was family day the event pro vided entertainment for kids as well as adults the variety of entertainment included clowns face-painters and car icature artists the general feeling was very fes tive tucker said graduates who came with their families did not only make the trip to just see football the alumni association also held senior alumni day for people who gradu ated at least 35 years ago graduates were given the opportunity to return to lehigh and enjoy a catered luncheon and tailgates outside goodman stadium mba alumni day was a part of the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 tuesday october 1 1996 all the lehigh news first parents get glimpse of student life k/bl 104 no 8 by kimberly shenberg news writer see parents page 4 b&w photo by daphnie sicre phil claverie 99 adam millsom 99 john egan 99 and mike sfarra 97 cook up hotdogs and burgers for parents during tailgates before saturday's football game students gave their parents a look at life on lehigh's campus last weekend during the annual upperclass parents weekend saturday morning activities included an open house and a parents reception at the military sciences department a career services program and a phi eta sigma honor society induc tion ceremony the ceremony praised students who completed their freshman year with superior academic records lori kenemuth 99 a member of phi eta sigma said being m the honor society is a great learning experience and taught her time management her first year i had to learn to focus my time so that i could balance my social life and my studying kenemuth said i don't feel i missed out on anything during my freshman year each individual college also hosted coffee hours m various locations across the campus the newman center held an open house for students and parents and the men's and women's lacrosse teams held their annual alumni game united nations teleconference reaches lehigh by jennifer kucharski news writer
