the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 34 all the lehigh news first friday march 8 1996 lewis speaks as tresolini scholar by christine karkazis news writer columnist for the new york times and two-time pulitzer prize winner anthony lewis spoke tuesday to lehigh stu dents and faculty about his expe rience as a renouned journalist and author at the annual tresolini lecture in law lewis's topic the speech we hate touched on first amendment issues and related decisions from supreme court cases in the past and present he cited cases in which the freedom of citizens to express a distasteful or even repugnant opinion was challenged by the supreme court lewis discussed the impor tance of protecting all speech not just an expression with which we agree i am probably not making many friends lewis said jok ingly after his speech defended expressions made by groups such as nazi skin heads and other hate groups students attending the lecture were impressed by the breadth of lewis's knowledge bridgette triola 97 said i thought he was very articulate in expressing his ideas i learned from listening to him nicole amico 97 also felt lewis was well-spoken it was interesting to listen to a man who is so well-known and well-regarded in the field of journalism amico said before the tresolini lecture began students in the college scholar program and the society of professional journalists were able to speak with lewis on an informal basis lewis spoke to them about his background as a journalist he has covered fundamental areas of law and government such as the supreme court and the justice department he said he had even thought of becoming a lawyer during his college years at harvard university but thought he would make more of an impact in the world as a journalist i have discovered in myself as a journalist that i wanted to change the world he said my experience is that i had a greater opportunity to affect life through journalism cord frieden 96 said it was more interesting to meet and talk with lewis personally it was a lot more informative to be able to talk to him person ally than to listen to him give a speech frieden said many of the students at the discussion were interested in journalism and lewis addressed b&w photo hy mark rubins anthony lewis spoke to students and faculty on tuesday tracs program revised by senate by jennifer everett news writer student senate announced at it's tuesday meeting that a revised tracs system will go into affect during the first week of april according to the revisions the existing schedule will remain the same for sunday through wednesday the thursday through saturday tracs system will have been following new rules two vans will travel a fixed route or 30-minute loop and will stop at designated areas near blue light phones the wait at each stop will be approximately 15 minutes until the next van arrives one car will be on-call ser vice available to off-campus stu dents who do not live near a loop stop they did not discuss which stops would be affected security will provide walking escorts for any student who lehigh struggles with financial aid erin keen 98 remembers vividly the june afternoon before her freshman year when she received her first financial aid package from lehigh keen believed she would get a great aid package regardless of where she went to school after all her mother had just bought a new house and was burdene^b^norteaee payments she was also a i single parent supporting hcrh children on a nurse's salary i keen disap-h pointed with scholarships l work study theh monetary aid covered almost everything keen also recalls receiving her new updat ed aid package last summer lehigh had determined that after a year keen and her mother could now afford 3,000 less in scholarships and double the amount of work study keen felt let down by a university that had just one year earlier promised almost a full ride lehigh took into account my situation in determining my financial aid keen said but when you consider my financial situa tion even a change of 500 is a big deal the office of financial aid at lehigh works with millions of dollars it provided a total of 40.7 million including university funded grants and scholarships federal and state grants loans and work study to almost half of the students for the 1994-95 academic william stanford director of financial aid over the last decade the university has made progressive changes in its financial aid policies however while some stu dents praise lehigh for its success in financial aid others like keen argue that the financial aid office has its share of flaws this article will look at the history of financial aid at lehigh and examine its current problems and perhaps questionable future • • • determining financial aid at lehigh first involves calculating parental income and assets student income and assets and the number of dependent children stanford said the number is subtracted from the total cost of attendance often taking into account spe cial circumstances for each family we take all that and shake it up in a big brown paper bag and we come up with an expected contribution for both parents and students he said for the 1995-96 school year the average financial aid award was 17,200 stanford said total aid including government loans pell grants state grants and rotc scholar ships came out to roughly 39 million university-funded jobs and federal work study added another 800,000 stanford said the largest portion of finan cial aid goes to university-funded grants and scholarships the money comes from a variety of sources about 18 million is taken from lehigh's general operating revenues endowments provide about 4.6 million for scholarships with another 1 million coming from one-year university-sponsored scholar ships another 1.7 million comes from the alumni annual giving fund lehigh president peter likins said that this
