by molly maginn news writer see lyceum page 4 the first annual lehigh international lyceum creat ed to showcase student fields of expertise was held last friday m the university center the lehigh international lyceum is a one-day uni versity-wide undergraduate symposium where students from all disciplines present their creative scholarly and research achievements the lyceum began with a short welcome and intro duction by burcin aksoy 97 aksoy explained the goals of the symposium and how the lyceum formed the goals of the symposium include developing future leaders m a global society integrating interna tional experiences for all students enhancing the qual ity of undergraduate learning and teaching skills and techniques for making presentations aksoy said the lyceum was broken into three different sessions covering a multitude of topics several speeches ran simultaneously so people could hear and discuss many different presentations elizabeth glaser 96 was one of the student pre senters b&w photo by katherine eagleton the international lyceum friday brought students from the various lehigh colleges together to discuss their fields from left nancy black 98 chris economou 98 and rob upton 98 presented their projects mayor to run for congress the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded m 1894 tuesday february 13 1996 national condom week kicks off all the lehigh news first vol 103 no 29 by giselle gutierrez news writer marie cristy nurse educator said,"l think that participating m national condom awareness week is a good thing because it raises awareness m the students about the importance of protect ing themselves from sexually transmitted diseases from feb 12 through 17 tables will be set up m the ltniversity center and m the ulrich center with sexual peer educators and members from the wellness center pick up free condoms at least 75 percent of american college students are sexually active and stds are most prevalent m teenagers and young adults according to a report m the american social health association's newsletter stds are a big problem on college campuses and students need to be made aware of how to think and act responsibly stanley yellin director of the health center said for the fifth consecutive year lehigh will participate m national condom awareness week to promote education about sexual issues the university is working to advance the concept of safe sex to all sexually active stu dents on campus by participat ing m this event m conjunction with colleges and universities across the nation they are hop ing to reach out to more stu dents the peer educators will be available to speak to anyone who requests information con cerning issues surrounding sex leigh wormick 97 a sexual peer educator said national condom awareness week is very successful because it makes people more aware about sexually transmitted diseases and gives people a chance to by toby bonagura news writer helped me tremendously to be a more effective mayor and a mayor who has been commit ted to developing public/pri vate partnerships to get things done m bethlehem during his term as mayor smith helped establish the bethlehem economic development corporation a loan pool with funds from within the community the loan pool was used to foster development projects that included the building of the comfort suites hotel downtown and the bethlehem technology center he said work is being done to improve the entrance into the south side by route 22 m order to improve its negative see smith page 4 welfare reform a balanced budget amendment and the revitalization of the south side were topics addressed during bethlehem mayor ken smith's talk with lehigh's college republicans last wednesday smith 61 is a republican candidate for pennsylvania's 15th congressional district seat currently held by paul mchale he said he used this oppor tunity to speak with the stu dents about issues that con cern them as well as the nation smith said my experi ence as a businessman has b w photo by lauren disavino the freddy jones band rocked rathbone hall on friday night for a crowd of around 380 students they played songs from their recent album north avenue wake up call lyceum showcases student talent w m sports features the women's basketball team who can't seem to stop winning see page 12 sports 10-12 men's b-ball wrestling 12 poet sonia sanchez read her lyrical and emotional work for stu dents on saturday night see page 3 news 1-4 world news briefs 2 science sheds light on the warning signs of heart disease as well as the technology available to treat it see page 5 science 5-7 scienceßriefs 7 in 1976 a los angeles secretary officially married a 50 pound rock the ceremony was witnessed by more than 20 people source 2201 fascinating facts by david lewis
