the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 21 friday december 1 1995 ah the lehigh news first delta zeta sorority's charter pulled by abbasia khan assistant news editor after seven years at lehigh delta zeta sorority had its charter pulled by its national organization nov 17 because there were not enough sis ters living in the sorority jennifer volchko associate dean of student life said the national or ganization put dz on dormant sta tus which means the sisters in the house are now considered alumni the primary reason for the loss of the charter is because dz did not have enough people in its sorority volchko said there are currently 30 women in the house and they will graduate 16 in may volchko said they are competing with sororities who have 72 members volchko said the nationals have been working with dz for two years on getting their numbers up so los ing the charter wasn't sudden typically traveling consultants fromthe national organizations visit the chapters once a year for two or three days volchko said but dz nationals put forth an extra effort nationals sent six or seven con sultants for a couple weeks at a time they stayed with dz during last year's rush in february for the entire two weeks she said tara rodgers 96 president of dz said her sorority lost its charter for two main reasons in addition to low numbers dz sisters were going be forced to move out of their house in may due to the return of sigma phi epsilon frater nity the original occupant of the house it would be difficult to fi nance a new house for the sisters volchko said with low numbers the cost per person to live in a house would have been enormous volchko said the same thing happened to pi lambda phi fraternity they were down to 15 brothers living in the house and it would have cost them 4,100 each without the meal plan rodgers said the sisters were sur prised when they received the news because they were not given any warning or ultimatums we knew our numbers were down but we were always encour aged to do our best at rushing she said volchko said nationals broke the news to the dz sisters at the same time four women were to be initi zeta psi good scholar election raises 20,000 by patrick doherty news writer zeta psi fraternity held its sixth annual good scholar election awards ceremony nov 20 where it presented a check for 20,040 to the lehigh valley unit of the american cancer society the election held to benefit can cer research was attended by one representative chosen for academic achievement from each fraternity sorority residence hall or other or ganization also in attendance were those who nominated the candidates this year the good scholar elec tion involved 59 organizations its stated purpose is threefold to raise money for cancer research to rec ognize scholarship and to raise awareness about cancer the two highest earning organi zations were zeta psi represented by sam pines 97 and the faculty represented by alvin cohen pro fessor of economics and zeta psi faculty adviser because neither group was per mitted by the rules to benefit from the fund raising the first place prizes of $ 1,000 for the organization and a seven-day cruise for the representa tive were awarded to the third place earners james jackson assistant professor of psychology and the big baw photo by michelle lehigh-lafayette football game phi gamma delta fraternity broth ers from both lehigh and lafayette college joined together to raise money to save a brother's life beginning with a ceremony at lafayette the two chapters teamed up for a run from easton to bethlehem nov 17 to raise money for mark kirschenbaum a lafayette fiji alumnus diag nosed with leukemia who needs financial support to receive a bone marrow transplant each brother either by himself or in a pair ran a half-mile leg of the 16-mile course after a brother finished his part of the run he passed the football that was used during the football game to another brother lafayette brothers ran from their campus to notre dame high school in easton where they passed the ball to the lehigh brothers the lehigh brothers then ran to new street and then onto the lehigh campus finishing at fiji's house brothers at lafayette were responsible for setting up the run and the course route lehigh brothers were responsible for the solicitation and collection of the donations from businesses cor porations fraternities and sororities brothers also collected money during the football game rick bloom 96 a lafayette fiji brother initiated the event he got the idea from other chapters that hold a run as an annual fund raiser b i received a letter from mark kirschcnbaum de tailing his illness and his problems bloom said sat down with lehigh's executive cabinet to decide what we could do to help i knew it would be a although they raised almost 6,000 bloom was shocked by the wide coverage of the event i can't believe it was televised he said we never expected that much coverage bloom wished that kirschenbaum could have come to either campus to meet the brothers he never came to ei ther school ," b loom said he's too sick with leukemia he has already received the transplant now he needs to recover keith bockus 96 was impressed with how the two rival schools came together to help i was really pleased that we raised so much money from sponsors bockus said our an nual fund raiser luigi fiji never raises that much but mark needed all the money he could get for the procedure ■bockus was also im pressed with the way the two houses worked to gether despite the tradi tional rivalry of the big football weekend the brothers did an amazing job organizing everything with the lafayette chapter they should be commended he said kyle yerk,'96 president of the lehigh fiji chapter wants to turn the run into an annual event we raised over 6,000 so far next year we want to raise over 10,000 for another charity yerk said for three weeks worth of work with full cooperation by brothers and the university we were pretty successful the brothers did an amazing job organizing everything with the lafayette chapter they
