amvets to hold dance ( story special request of bethlehem amvets all lehigh men are invited to attend a g i lucky dance to be held under the sponsorship of the bethlehem chapter of the american veterans of world war 11 friday nov 30 at 9 p.m at the bethlehem elks club 40 west broad st bethlehem the admis sion charge will be 75 for all except service men on furlough or terminal leave who will be admitted free friday's g i lucky dance will be one of a series of such dances held by the bethlehem amvets during the last few months the most recent of which took place on sept 23 a feature of the dance will be a drawing from the names of men on fur continued on page 4 pep rally arouses fire led by dick macadams acting as master of ceremonies lehigh students and their weekend dates gathered in grace hall friday evening to pave the way for a lehigh victory the following afternoon cheers and songs re-echoed from the walls as enthusiastic brown and white fans gave whole hearted support to the lehigh cheerleaders and band jake pearsall after announcing good prospects for a third win present ed jack tirrell with the football used in the drexel game on the ball appeared the names of all his fellow squad members jack had previously broken his arm during football practice al granese also made a few remarks pointing out that if continued on page 4 maroons win tough game with lehigh kovach and liacono lead lafayette drive with taylor stadium the stage for the 81st meeting of football's longest uninterrupted series le high university's engineers bowed to lafayette college 7-0 close to 7000 shivering fans saw the leopards score early in the second period and then cling desperately to that narrow mar gin for the rest of the game for the maroon clad men from easton this was their first and only vic tory of an otherwise dismal sea son in which they had lost seven and tied princeton saturday's win however could hardly be continued on page 3 pi lambda phi cops if cap for best dance friday night revelries please committee lehigh houseparty really got off to a rolling start friday night after the pep rally when frater nity members went back to their respective houses and town and dorm men adjourned to drown hall to roll back the rugs dust off the tops of the pianos and just have a good time in general while all this preparation was going on the members of the judging committee messrs sey mour glatzer mcl ramberg hans baer al dinon and of course their respective dates started in conspicuously sneaking from house to house in their luminous clothing and neon lit autogyros castle plays lehigh dances queen reigns the fall prom one of the most successful dances ever held at lehigh took place on saturday night nov 24 at grace hall the prom feature of weekend at le high presented lee castle and his orchestra the first name band at lehigh since 1943 another tradi tion revived was the picking of a queen of the ball mcl ramberg chairman of the dance committee stated that 366 student and alumni couples were present this constituted the larg est percentage of the student body ever present at a lehigh dance besides these there were about 40 more couples including chaper ones and guests during intermission at about 11 o'clock al goodman a member of the dance committee presented 14 candidates for the title queen of the ball the contestants in cluded miss doris applegate miss jean dewhearst miss letty gar rihan miss louise hagy miss mary lou herr miss millie lou hittinger miss jean morrison miss sally rittenhouse miss betty rogers miss ann root miss ruth sharrity miss ann simmons miss ann thomas and mrs wil liams after each contestant had walked across the stage the dance committee which included besides mcl ramberg and al goodman jack shipherd bob jones charles hafner and dick mcadams met with dean congdon professor shook and colonel easterday and decided upon miss letty garrihan of allentown as the queen of the continued on page 4 chapel service conducted by dr beardslee a new precedent for lehigh houseparties was set sunday af ternoon when a non-sectarian service was held in packer mem orial chapel at 12:30 this service of prayer hymns and meditation was a fitting end for the eventful weekend at lehigh the invocation was given by dr claude gillette beardslee the university chaplain followed by the hymn o god our help in ages past sung by the congre gation for the scripture dr beardslee chose the twenty-third psalm the testament of juda chapter 58 of isaiah and verses one and verses four to eight inclusive from chapter four letter to the phi lippians after the hymn faith of our fathers dr beardslee led the congregation in the lord's prayer for the pastoral prayer dr beardslee offered a prayer by st augustine a prayer by george dawson a thanksgiving prayer by general jonathan m wain wright a group of three short prayers for peace dr beardslee's own prayer for young people and a prayer by w e orchard the music for the service was furnished by dr t edgar shields at the organ as his prelude dr shields played chorale by krebs andantino by franck and aye maria by bach gounod the postlude was dr shields own improvisation ushers for the service were charles hafner feb 46 and jack shipherd june 46 getting back to the more ser ious aspect though all houses that announced their intention of hav ing dances on friday night at the if meeting were visited by the judging committee the committee based their decisions on the fol lowing points 1 the hospitality of the houses 2 the decorations 3 the communal spirit 4 the general atmosphere after seeing all the houses there were five which stood out in the committee's estimation these were delta sigma phi tau delta phi theta chi pi lambda phi and delta phi the five was further cut down to just three tau delta phi theta chi and pi lambda phi and then finally just one pi lambda phi the win ning house was presented with the cup at the dance saturday night the tau delts and the theta chis were announced with honorable mention for the fine showing they made in the final tally the judges should be given a vote of thanks for the impartial job they did and also for the time they volunteered thanks to the dean and the university should also be given for making the affair possible price 5 cents bethlehem pa wednesday november 28 1945
