• dui checkpoints will be in place before and after football games bethlehem police along with departments from hellertown freemansburg and lower saucon township will set up sobriety check points on roads leading to goodman stadium for tomorrow's football game against holy cross university and next satuday's game against lafayette college bethlehem police said multiple check points will be m place before and after the game at different locations officers will be alert for drivers under the influence and un derage drinkers though lehigh police will not be in volved m the checkpoints we support the effort to minimize drinking and driving said john smeaton assistant vice president of student affairs in addition to checkpoints police patrols will monitor back roads leading to goodman stadium parking lots and will enforce alco hol-related laws the sobriety checkpoints and patrols are funded by a pennsylvania department of transportation highway safety grant press release the english department has completely re vised its curriculumfor its majors making courses more in-depth starting m the fall of 19 courses above the 100 level will be worth four credits while the lower-level courses including freshman english will remain three credits the writing-intensive course which is taken m the junior year will be combined into a newly designed four-credit class called senior seminar which will be taken the senior year the senior seminar will be limited to 15 students it will incorporate class discussion individual research and group effort the change m credit hours is an attempt to allow time for classes to offer a more in-depth concentration on the material students are en couraged to work harder m these classes since fewer need be taken i hope to have more satisfaction from the students since they will be given a chance to do their best and accomplish more things said edward gallagher professor of english brian slocum 97 who is triple majoring m english history and theater has mixed opinions about the credit hour change i feel that this will affect students who have more than one major because it will limit the number of courses that can be taken since the classes will be more demanding he said barbara traister english department chair woman wants students to take ideas from previ ous classes and apply them to the seminar we hope to make this a special experience for the seniors one m which they can use all of the skills they have learned m the past couple of years m a real seminar experience traister said english majors are also offered the opportu nity to participate m externships giving them the chance to experience field work although the externship program was started this semester the department still working out the details the center donated a portion of them to another shelter skladany began planning this event more than three months ago after realizing lehigh students had the potential to do something to ben efit those m the community i got m touch with the commu nity relations office and they sup plied all the money necessary to make copies of the fliers skladany said i then mapped out the com munities that i wanted to target i focused on easily accessible long roads and upper to middle class neighborhoods skladany who is a member of the save volunteer group and al pha phi omega national service fra ternity had originally intended the canned food drive to take place on halloween evening i wanted to distinguish college students from trick-or-treaters and ask for cans instead of candy skladany said instead we decided it would be easier to collect a couple days before halloween because it would be less hectic regardless we were able to donate cans away from the rush of the holiday season when everyone is collecting food terry auspitz 97 also lent a lot of his time to the canned food drive next year i'd like to put m even more time and effort auspitz said it's nice to fight the image that lehigh students are only party ani mals that like to spend their parents money martin did a great job orga nizing it was something that made me feel like i had actually helped people who needed it activity can be continued m the future he said skladany wants to expand the volunteer size and cover more of the lehigh community next year more than 3,000 cans were col lected and donated to the
