trembley addresses sigma xi on hawks professor francis trembley of the biology department presided last monday at a meeting of sig ma xi a society dedicated to sci entific research he showed charts maps and bird skins illustrating different types of birds and hawks in flight a kodachrome film of hawks in flight was also shown professor trembley ex plained why hawks use hawk mountain at drehersville pa as a migrating center as vice-president of the hawk mountain sanctuary associaion professor trembley has a great interest in hawks he replaced maurice broun as head of sigma xi when the later joined the sea bees early in the war schedule of houseparty events friday nov 23 1945 7:30 p.m — pep rally 9:00 p.m — dance at drown hall and at the fraternities saturday nov 24 1945 8-12 a.m — classes with dates 2:15 p.m — lehigh - lafayette game at taylor stadium 9:00 p.m — dance at grace hall lee castle and orchestra 11:15 p.m — queen of the chosen 1:00 a.m — breakfast at lamberton hall with entertainment sunday nov 25 1945 12:30 p.m — chapel service behind to erase a 9-0 lead which the blue and gold dragons had built up nip and tuck acting captain jake pearsall lost the toss and drexel's dick dowd elected to kick lehigh took the kick-off and at once started driving up the field but an inter ception of one of spencer wright's passes stopped the march on the 50 yard line although the engi neers held the upper hand throughout the first period their numerous penalties acted as one of the dragon's best offensives intercepting another of wright's heaves drevel led by fleet-footed dick dowd moved to lehigh's 13 yard line just as the first quarter ended the sturdy forward wall of the engineers dug in at this point and halted the attack on the 5 but the dragons rolled again after lehigh had kicked out of danger this time their advance was stopped when fullback heffner fumbled and joe tropp recovered for the engineers on their own 12 from here with granese hoffman and kachel alternatingly lugging the ball lehigh drove deep into drexel territory but the attack bogged down and the home team took over on their own 23 how ever the engineers who seemed to possess more fight than at any other time this season began to roll again when they got command of the ball starting at midfield with an end-around by bob burs lem and following with gains by al wilson and charley hoffman and a pass from wright to burs lem that was ruled completed due to interference lehigh got as far as drexeps 11 here with a first down and hopes of an engineer tally the half ended before an other play could be called score lehigh 0 drexel 0 continoed on page 4 again dowd kicked-off for drexel to open the second half but this time his boot carried far downfield and rolled into the end zone wright trying to pick it up kicked it out of the end zone and after finally recovering it he was downed behind the goal line for a safety that gave the blue and gold a 2-0 lead will give service in chapel on nov 25 there will be a chapel service this sunday nov 25 at 12:30 p.m to climax weekend at lehigh the service which will be under the direction of dr claude g beardslee will consist mainly of familiar hymns and devotional prayer there will be no sermon the service will last about forty minutes it is being held at this time in order to permit those who wish to attend regular sun day church services to come to this special chapel service it is hoped that there will be a soloist from the bach choir to sing the thanksgiving hymn attendance at this chapel ser vice has nothing to do with the contest being held for the lehigh lafayette football but it is the duty of everyone to attend some devotional service a rousing introduction by the le high university band school songs cheers and skits guest speakers will help get everyone in the proper spirit for the big football game with lafayette on saturday afternoon the presence of the girls will add much to the spirit of the occasion fraternity dances after the pep rally there will be a dance in drown hall for town and dorm men sponsored by the town-dorm council there will also be dances at the different fra ternity houses starting at the same time the house dances are com petitive and each living group will try to win an interfraternity cup to be given by the if council for the best conducted affair a com mittee composed of members of if council will be around to the houses between 10 p.m and 2 p.m to determine the winners of the cup dates to classes students are invited to bring their dates to saturday morning classes students are asked to get permission from the professors be forehand lunch will be served at noon at the fraternities and at lamberton hall lafayette game the lehigh-lafayette football game will start at 2:30 p.m stu dents are urged to get tickets well in advance as the combination of houseparty and a large homecom ing crowd who always attend this traditional game will portend a large advance sale this game will have all the spirit and glamour of pre-war lehigh lee castle the dance saturday night in grace hall will start promptly at 9 p.m when lee castle will fur nish the music lee was the fea tured trumpet player with such bands as tommy dorsey and ar tie shaw when shaw went into the navy it was castle who took over that band leading it on to click in the last five minutes of the final quarter and drove quickly to score two touchdowns and grasp a 14-9 victory led by al granese stocky little halfback the engineers came from all lehigh agog over weekend plans gala houseparty in store for dates as social committee provides activity hourly its here ! ! the weekend you have waited for is at hand — weekend at lehigh over three hundred dates are expected to bring glamour to south mountain when festivities begin on friday afternoon 4 p m november the 23rd the weekend will get underway with dinner for lehigh men and their dates at the fraternity houses and at lamberton hall the lafay ette pep rally will follow dinner at grace hall about 7:30 p.m after macadams wins leading role in a bell for adano dick adams m e june 47 has been chosen for the leading role that of major victor joppolo in the new mustard and cheese play a bell for adano the play will be given in broughal high school auditorium on the weekend of the 25th of january this play directed by professor al rights deals with the many problems confronting an american civil affairs officer placed in charge of a liberated sicilian town the play shows how one american major copes with these problems and wins the respect and confidence of the people of the town dick mcadams as a human warm-hearted american officer of italian descent who understands these people and wants to make them normal human beings again after their experiences under fascist rule for nine years soon continued on page 3 marriage laws are topics of debate marriage in all aspects was the topic of the debate held in the browsing room of lehigh's library on wednesday nov 14 at 7:30 p.m before a group of 80 people the debate was called to order by mr john weinland of the mo ravian college for men the first speaker was dick macadams of lehigh who spoke about the his torical methods of securing a bride from which many of our present day customs descended mr mac adams mentioned the tradition of throwing rice and he reminded us that men used to steal brides and the rocks not rice were most probably thrown at the newly weds in conclusion mr mac adams told of modern cosmetics and their help in preserving mon agomy the next speaker was miss ger ry mitchell of cedar crest college who talked about the religious ceremonies connected with mar riages she gave a brief history of marriage as we know it and then pointed out the church's views on marriage miss mitchell discussed the church's claim that it should rule all wedlocks she concluded by saying that marriage is a sac continued on page 6 interfraternity dance contest at their last meeting the ifc discussed the progress of the com munity chest drive and reported that total collections now amount to over 700 dollars — with more expected before the drive is com pleted funds received in this manner from the lehigh student body aid such worthy organiza tions as the world student's fund and the red cross a topic of the approach ing houseparty the problem of se juring volunteer judges for house ances was tackled front and center stepped hans baer al dinon sy glatzer and mcl ram berg to break the deadlock a prize cup purchased by the i f council will be awarded to the fraternity house sponsoring the best dance in the opinion of the judges a report that the s c l has donated 300 dollars to provide en tertainment after the dance was announced dormitory section will be informed as to plans for the complete weekend rushing rules a subject of recent criticism were reviewed and questioned the results were 1 a new set of rules will be set forth at the next meeting and 2 a committee whose duty will be to investigate rushing violations was nominated bob cramer hank douglas and bill schwemlin comprise
