bethlehem pa wednesday november 14 1945 vol liii no 3 price 5 cents houseparty plans are now complete lee castle's band victory pep rally lafayette game will feature weekend when lee castle brings his orchestra here on nov 24 to weekend at lehigh it will mark one of the highlights of the first real lehigh houseparty since the spring of 1943 when jimmy lunceford furnished the music for the senior prom the resuming of regular houseparties will herald lehigh's social reconversion now that enrollment is getting back to normal we again can have all the social functions that were always an integral part of lehigh life the festivities will get underway friday the 23rd with dinner for big pep rally to be held friday night taylor gym will be scene of drexel rally this friday night at taylor gym there will be a pep rally at 7:30 p.m the team wants it and the students want it so we are ex pecting a big turn out there will be speakers cheers song,s and a skit this rally will put the foot ball team back on the road to vic tory and student support is des perately needed we want a win ning football team and show the team how much we are behind by appearing at the drexel pep rally this friday night the team only has two more games and the brown and white can win both of them if coopera tion is gained on part of the stu dents and the team we're going to show them we are behind them friday night and the team will produce saturday at drexel for lehigh we can all be at drexel saturday for it is only outside of philadelphia and easy to get to by car see you at the pep rally friday night and come prepared to yell like hell cheers will be rehearsed over and some new ones added the brown and white will win these last two games for they are the better team but the student body has got to get behind them this rally is given through the request of the footballers so let's give them a real send-off sigma xi presents grant to erdoss at the annual meeting of the committee on awards for grants in-aid of research of the sigma xi society eleven grants of money were made to various institutions of learning among these a grant of 300 was made to prof b k erdoss of lehigh university the grant was made with the understanding that lehigh would contribute 200 of its own money to aid in the experiments that professor erdoss has been en gaged in during the war professor er doss was doing some work for the u s navy in the field of aero dynamics the navy therefore stood the expense of having some extremely delicate and expensive equipment installed in the schlie ren laboratory now that the war is over the navy is allowing the university to keep the equipment the schlieren method was first introduced to the university by prof m c stuart of the m e department who is now on leave of absence in the american uni versity in biarritz france this method has been in use for some time in the study of air flow the principal is really quite simple in basis but extremely del icate in practice the air in a wind tunnel is passed over heated coils it can then be seen when special light is passed over it be cause of the condensation of the warmed air therefore the air wake of an obstacle in the path of the air currents can be photo graphed the money has been received from the sigma xi society and it will enable the work that has been done by professor erdoss in the past to continue for at least an other year this laboratory is also a big step in the initiation of an aero-dynamics major course that is now being started in the uni versity arcadia plans sports dance on wednesday nov 7 the ar cadia cabinet held its initial meeting of the semester the meeting was called by president richard macadams who presided in view of the fact that the meeting was called for wednesday instead of the customary monday attendance at the meeting was rather poor and there was hardly a legal quorum therefore there was no important action taken the following appointments were made by president macadams for the standing arcadia committees 1 arcadia committee on classes a charles g hafner chairman b richard j macadams c allen j goodman d john j shipherd c fairfax s continued on page 5 m&c to cast for new show a bell for adano will be the next presentation of mustard and cheese it will be given at broug hal auditorium on a friday and saturday evening in the latter part of january the first readings took place on monday afternoon with a very dis appointing turnout allen good man president of the club has announced further readings in drown hall at 4 o'clock on this coming thursday and friday af ternoons november 15 and 16 those having class until 5:00 and desiring to try out for the play should come to drown hall im mediately upon the conclusion of their class mr goodman reports that as yet no parts have been cast but that casting will begin this thurs day and continue on friday there are twenty-seven characters in the play representing a wide variety of types and thus a good response is strongly encouraged it should be added here that this is the most ambitious production mustard and cheese has attempted since the be ginning of the emergency period a bell for adano a dramatiz ation by paul osborn of the novel by john hersey concerns the al lied military government in a small town in italy it gives an insight into the difficulties en countered in governing a con quered or as the author prefers liberated people a bell for adano which received excellent reviews and played for over a year in new york gives mustard and cheese a fine opportunity to put on something really worth while copies of a bell for adano are in the university library for any who are interested in reading and coming out for the play lehigh men and their dates at the fraternity houses and at lamber ton hall after dinner there will be a big pep rally in grace hall school songs and cheers will hetp get everyone in the proper spirit for the big football game saturday afternoon there will be humor ous skits for the entertainment of the students and their guests the presence of the girls will add much to the spirit of the occasion after the pep rally there will be a dance in drown hall sponsored by the dorm and town men there will also be dances at the differ ent fraternity houses these groups will all hold open house and the men and their dates will make the rounds to the different dances an old houseparty tradition the house dances are competitive and each living group will try to win the interfraternity prize for the most successful affair after the dances refreshments will be serv ed at the houses and at lamberton hall students are invited to bring their dates to saturday morning classes to see how they are con ducted at lehigh lunch will be served at noon at the fraternities and at lamberton hall the big football game will start at 2 p.m when lehigh plays host to lafayette students should get their tickets well in advance as this game is the biggest of the sea son and there will be a large homecoming crowd as well as many townspeople dinner will be soon after the game at the houses and at lamberton hall the dance saturday night in grace hall will start at nine o'clock and lee castle and his or chestra will furnish the music lee is one of the country's leading trumpeters and he and his orches tra have just completed a success ful stay at frank daley's mead owbrook in new jersey the band is now playing at the glen island cassino in new rochelle new york at the eleven o'clock intermis sion one of the dates will be chosen as queen of the ball and she will be heralded on an elab orate throne during the dance refreshments will be served and remembrance photos will be taken continued on page 3 forum to discuss marriage tonight approximately seventy-five stu dents from six local colleges have registered for the open forum dis cussion of the lehigh valley de bating conference to be held on wednesday evening at 7:30 in the browsing room of the library registrants for the discussion on uniform federal marriage laws include fifty students from cedar crest fifteen from moravian col lege for women six from lafay ette and three from moravian col lege for men the debate however is not re served solely for those registered it is especially open to members of the public who are interested in the problems concerning mar riage laws each of the colleges represented will have one speaker except mo ravian college for men after ev ery individual speech panel dis cussion in debate and discussion will be held the forum will be left to the floor william weinland moravian men will act as chairman for the evening anyone interested in organ izing an ice hockey team for the coming season please
