bethlehem pa wednesday november 7 1945 price 5 cents lehigh spirit goes upward christinas vacation increased houseparty features lee castle earl compton bob jones hans baer and jon epstein who were tapped on monday by pi delta epsilon for their fine work on the brown and white lee castle top trumpeter to play here rising young musician played with artie shaw lee castle who brings his or chestra to weekend at lehigh on nov 24 is one of america's out standing trumpeters lee was the featured attraction with such bands as glenn miller tommy dorsey artie shaw and many oth er top-flighters he was featured with artie shaw at the time shaw was called into the navy and took over that band leading it on one of the most successful tours a band ever had the castle orchestra rightly claims the title of having some of america's finest musicians in its lineup lee is responsible for the discovery of many musicians and vocalists who today are considered tops in the business therefore you can be sure all the members of the band were carefully chosen for their ability xmas vacation petition passed by faculty three additional days granted to students for the first time in many many semesters so many in fact that one has to wince at the very thought of them the faculty has passed a petition put before them by arcadia this petition deals with the christmas vacation as a result of the present sched uling of three semesters a year the summer semester has been start ing a day or two earlier each june than it has been in the pre ceding year this opening has be come too early for some high schools after consideration of many alternatives the committee on petitions finds it desirable to extend the christmas vacation to include jan 2 1946 classes to start on jan 3 but don't let your exuberance run away with you of course there's a catch in conformity with this change of vacation classes in the winter semester would run through saturday feb 9 the proposal increases the christmas vacation by three days and increases the inter-semester period in february by three days thus making up a total of six days this change will bring the open ing of the summer semester in continued on page 4 marriage problems to be forum topic marriage and all its intricate problems will be the challenging question for a panel discussion of the lehigh valley debating con ference when lehigh will act as host to six valley colleges on wed nesday nov 14 at 7:30 in the browsing room of the library john tuberty president of delta omicron theta honorary debat ing society invites all lehigh stu dents members of the faculty and anyone interested in the founding of a universal federal marriage law to the general debate for audi ence and members of the panel who will include gerry mitchell of cedar crest richard macadams of lehigh and tentatively faculty representatives of lehigh and mo ravian college for women the universal federal marriage law discussion will be a forerun ner to the debate on the univer sal federal divorce law which is scheduled for the december meet ing five participating colleges cedar crest moravian college for women and for men muhlenberg and lehigh have already met this season at cedar crest in a debate and discussion on free trade in the present scheme of international unity president tuberty stated that he was greatly pleased with attendance at these discussions es pecially since the conference has been established for encouraging open forums lehigh lafayette agree on peace on thursday nov 8 charles hafner chairman of the five man committee richard macadams president of arcadia and melvin ramberg secretary of arcadia will meet robert matton head of the lafayette student government and two associates in order to sign the traditional lehigh lafayette peace pact the committees will meet at the sigma phi epsilon house on thurs day afternoon and after dinner at the house they will sign the peace pact the purpose of this paper is to prevent the students of either school from damaging the prop erty of the other school before after or during the game after the treaty has been signed the student government of either school would be required to pay the other school for any damage done by students violating the treaty pi delt taps four new men at the first meeting of pi delta epsilon national journalism so ciety held monday nov 5
