contrary to popular belief the prohibition of freshmen to attend fra ternities during their first weekend at lehigh is not a new policy what was new this year was the strict enforce ment of those policies mark erickson dean of student life enforced the policy deterring freshmen from attending fraternity parties during orientation because of his concern about the well-being of freshmen students during freshmen orientation they should get to know each other rather than being exposed to alco hol erickson said overall orien tation went pretty well there were really no problems jennifer volchko associate dean of student life said there is no new policy and there is no ban for quite some time now it has been written in the student handbook that fraterni ties are not to throw parties during physics building renamed for lewis please see drinking on page 8 couldn't go up the hill so they par tied off campus but they went on the hill tuesday night because they were kept from going on the weekend we tried to encourage them to go to casino night or to go to the hypnotist stabinsky said but never have i seen so many people hanging out in the dorm at night chris holler 98 said it didn't really bother me that much a lot of people went anyway i just hung out and met people in my dorm and walked around campus freshmen orientation wasn't bad because there were a lot of activities where you could meet people the gryphons and the hall direc tors informed the freshmen of their restriction from the hill to protect themselves and to protect the frater nities from getting into trouble if freshmen or anyone under 21 is found intoxicated the gryphon's first duty is to make sure that person is okay depending on the extent of harm or damage done by the inebri ated person they must go spectrum from freshmen to doctoral students the dedication ceremony was led by edward uhl former chairman of the lehigh board of trustees and re tired chairman of fairchild indus tries other speakers at the ceremony included william hittinger current chairman of the board of trustees likins interim dean of the college of arts and sciences w beall fowler and physics professor yong kirn both kirn and fowler were past chair men of the physics department and worked closely with lewis michael bolton lehigh s vice lewis widow said his heart was in the physics department during lewis presidency he helped lehigh become a university of national distinction overseeing the admission of women in 1971 lewis term saw amazing enroll ment growth undergraduate enroll ment growing from 3,000 to 4,300 graduate enrollment growing from 1,300 to 2,000 under lewis term the forum the student-faculty campus govern ing body was created the pass/fail grading system was introduced and many new academic and construc tion programs were started lehigh president peter likins said deming lewis helped shape lehigh as we know it today he had the board of trustees dedicated and renamed the physics building as the deming lewis laboratory of the sherman fairchild center for the physical sciences on june 2 in memory of lehigh s 10th president w deming lewis lewis was a physicist a math ematician and a research administra tor he spent 23 years at bell labora tory participating in the development of the nation's radar system lewis was also extremely influential as an administrator with the apollo
