airband security lacking biw photo by mark rubins lambda chi pledges perform to rubber ducky at friday's airband competition former united states ambassa dor to kuwait edward gnehm jr spoke about his experiences during the persian gulf war to an audience of faculty students and alumni m the mark twain room of maginnes hall on wednesday gnehm was the ambassador to kuwait during the gulf war but was not actually m kuwait during that time because the country was in vaded several days prior to his sched uled arrival when i was asked to become the ambassador to kuwait m 1989 1 had no idea that saddam hussein had the same idea to get into kuwait he by emily busch assistant news editor the fraternities dg's pledge class did a spoof of television shows in cluding three's company and cheers toni giorgio 98 a new sister of dg said she had a good time at the contest 1 have never had so much fun before giorgio said i can't believe we actually won because we threw everything together last minute sigma chi gave a winning performance by dancing to a medley of songs joe denoia 97 a brother m sigma chi theta xis parking lot where the event was held were throwing the glass bottles on stage apparently no one was hurt at the event the scariest part was the rocks and the glass there shouldn't have been glass bottles there janson said having more than one en trance makes it virtually impossible to control the crowds aside from these problems janson thought airband was suc cessful frommy focal point.lthink the contest went well janson said the brothers from theta xi main tained the best control they could delta gamma won the sorority competition and sigma chi won for despite having one of its big gest turnouts m recent years on friday night theta xi fraternity had troubles with security at the airband contest the last competi tion of greek week events security problems included audience members throwing glass bottles onto the stage jolly janson greek affairs co ordinator and a judge of the event said security may be better if the event is m another location next year according to janson people sitting on the rocks that surround all the lehigh news first the brown and white tuesday may 2 1995 lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 indigo girls rock stabler vol 102 no 44 by michelle de mooy news editor showcasing the harder more earthy sound from their latest album swamp ophelia the indigo girls performed to a large audi ence at stabler arena on thursday night the group comprised of emily sailiers and amy ray played a set list of new and old material including favorites like closer to fine kid sailiers and ray also performed sev eral songs from swamp ophelia an album hailed as a more raw and in tense rock and roll attempt by the in digo girls the concert in cluded sessions of improvisational jamming with guitar and other instruments leahlindsky 97 was slightly surprised to hear a new sound from the duo i liked the acoustic parts of the concert especially when they used a cello m their music but it didn't really sound like them it was definitely a different sound lindsky other students said the style of their new music was a little disappointing anne-marie crowell 96 said she was expecting to hear the acoustical harmonious sound that the group has become famous for i thought the music was good and i did enjoy the concert but i just didn't buy them try ing to be hard rock ers crowell said crowell also said when sailiers and ray were jam ming with the help of other band members it became somewhat tedious and bor ing to listen to some of the jamming was definitely too long for me to enjoy listening to some audience-members were enthusi astic about hearing a different kind of music please see indigo page 5 baw photo by mark rubins emily sailiers of the indigo girls performs with partner amy ray at stabler former u.s ambassador to kuwait speaks to students by dianne shelton news writer please see iraq page 5 said gnehm explained he had been involved m middle eastern policy making for many years before mov ing to kuwait and serving m various positions within the government from being the deputy assistant di rector to secretary of defense during the gulf war gnehm stayed m a saudi arabian hotel with other united states officials keep ing close contact with members of the kuwaiti government by the time we were through with the ground and air war i finally got to go to the troops m february by the time the war was over i knew the kuwaiti officials very well
