george d fame assistant pro fessor of romance languages was drafted in 1942 and was sent over seas two months after his indu tion into the army the first months of his thirty-two months of duty in the european theater he spent as a french interpreter shortly after professor fame was made a claims investigator with the rank of staff sergeant after traveling through tunisia and southern italy sergeant fame was stationed in rome on v-e day asst prof frank j fornoff re turned to the chemistry building in august after a thirteen months sojourn in new york where he worked in the vacuum tube shop of the western electric company during professor fornoff's stay western electric was manufactur ing radar equipment fritz lab to johns hopkins the u s navy department claimed the services of bruce g johnston professor of civil engi neering and associate director of fritz laboratory for nine months after his departure in june 1942 he was then appointed senior en gineer at the johns hopkins uni versity laboratory of applied physics silver spring md during professor johnston's 2*/2 year stay at this laboratory he worked on the development of the anti-air craft radio proximity fuse and gun directors used by the navy after spending three years at the university of virginia assoc prof darrel e mack of the chem ical engineering department is once more back at his desk in the chem building breakfast at lamberton will be scheduled events the mustard and cheese club dramatic society of lehigh univer sity will hold a meeting of com petitors for their new play on monday nov 5 at 4:30 p.m the meeting will take place in drown hall plans for the new show to be released probably some time in january were laid at the m&c banquet held on monday of this week the event was in honor of three new members dick mac adams tom lewis and jon ep stein who were chosen for their outstanding work in the club's most recent productions time of your life and snafu the af fair included speeches by these men and an address by prof al bert rights which dealt primar ily with the rapid return to nor malcy of mustard and cheese weekend at lehigh will get under way friday evening with dinner it's here again — a houseparty of three days at lehigh over the weekend of nov 23 24 and 25 lehigh will hold weekend at le high the first affair of its kind since the spring of 1943 music will be supplied by lee castle current trumpet sensation recently playing at the meadowbrook in jersey who is the first name band at the uni versity since the junior prom of 43 when music was supplied by jimmy lunceford competitors urged to attend meeting at the various houses and at lam berton hall for town and dorm men following the dinner will be a pep rally in grace hall with school songs cheers skits and speeches to get everyone in the proper spirit for the football game saturday dates are expected to add much to the success of these functions immediately following the pep rally will be a march be hind the school band to a bon fire on taylor field where the group will gather for further celebra tion in expectation of the coming victory on the gridiron saturday the bon fire will be succeeded by fraternity dances at the re spective houses and a dance at drown hall for those living in the dorms or in town refreshments will be served following the activ ities at drown hall in lamberton as well as in the fraternity houses themselves saturday morning it is hoped dates will attend classes as has been done in the past on these three day affairs with the ending of classes at twelve o'clock lunch will be served at lamberton and the fraternity houses game time is scheduled for 2 p.m and stu dents are asked to get their tickets for dates well in advance it goes without saying that this will be the biggest and most important game of the season a large crowd of homecomers plus dates will crowd the stadium — so get your ticket early dinners once again at the houses and lamberton soon after the big game at taylor field the fall dance will commence at 9 o'clock atop grace hall with the danceable music of lee castle the affair will last till 1 a.m with an intermission at 11 o'clock dur ing the dance refreshments will be sold and remembrance photo graphs taken on the balcony at intermission a queen of the ball will be chosen from the young la dies attending the dance and this queen will be has set up a veterans administra tion guidance center to give ad visement to discharged servicemen of this area who are under pub lic law 16 or 346 dr wray h congdon director announced this morning the university has ap pointed everett a teal of storrs conn as vocational adviser since both public law 346 bet ter known as the gi bill of rights and public law 16 have been designed to restore employa bility by training lehigh's new center located in christmas-sau con hall on the campus will have for its major purpose helping vet erans find the training they need to fit them for their future job any veteran now receiving a pension is eligible to make appli cation for public law 16 which in cludes such benefits as tuition books and tools as well as a sub sistence allowance of 92 with an additional 25 for married men whether disability has caused a vocational handicap will be deter mined by the vocational adviser any honorably discharged vet eran who has been in service 30 days or longer may apply for the gi bill of rights benefits under this law allow one year of train ing for the first 90 days of active service plus a period of training equal to the length of time in ser vice however total training time may not exceed four calendar years in addition the veteran qualifying under this law may re ceive tuition up to 250 a semes ter with 50 a month subsistence veterans interested in receiving training under these bills should make application to the philadel phia office of the veterans admin istration all men accepted under public law 16 will then be as signed to the local guidance cen ter while men under the gi bill will receive a certificate of eligi bility for training and may re quest advice from the center if needed mr teal who came to lehigh from the university of connecti cut where he had been director of engineering science and manage ment was training program has had wide experience in recrea tional and vocational planning for schools colleges and communities calendar has classes scheduled for december 31st 1945 and january ist 1946 it would be perhaps better to say that we have to go to school on new year's eve and day no matter how you say it it is indeed a terrible situation in this new era of peace on earth that lehigh men cannot join the merry makers in welcoming in the new year in the midst of friends and family there are many fighting men who are still overseas and must forego the comfort of their homes — why should those men who are fortunate enough to have returned to normal civilian life be forced to suffer a similar loss our student leaders have not been lax in attempting to meet the popular demand for the stu dent body and a petition has been presented to the faculty by ar cadia this petition was turned over to the committee on petitions before the start of the current semester but as yet nothing has been done or even rumored as be ing done many times in the past several semesters similar petitions have been drawn up and sent to the administration and faculty and all have met the same sad fate the answer always was that pres ent war conditions and the de mands of the accelerated program made calling off of classes impos sible to cite one particular case — there was the petition drawn up last fall to obtain a thanksgiving vacation for the student body stu dent wishes were ignored and a denouncing editorial in the brown and white was similarly ignored today they cannot give us these excuses the war is over no mat ter how much these extra two days of vacation would harm the aca demic contents of the student mind the increase in student mor ale and faith in their administra tors would be of far greater value many faculty members in an informal poll plan either not to hold classes on at least new year's day or not to take an attendance record on this day it would be far better if this were universal and above all official the petition is in the faculty at least in part approves where is the bottle neck we the students of lehigh would appreciate finding out what administrators are pigeon-holing this matter which although insig nificant in the face of world events is important to us faculty adds many to staff brown and white lehigh university coupled with the increase in en rollment of students for the fall semester at lehigh university is the general return of professors to the campus who have been granted leaves of absence during the na tional emergency at present there are ten men who have resumed their teaching duties this semes ter prof paul l bayley of the physics department worked at the national bureau of standards washington d c after leaving lehigh in april 1944 he was one of several lehigh men who aided in the development of the prox imity fuse an important military secret throughout the war fame served overseas support the team this coming saturday november 3 lehigh's football team is going to journey down to new brunswick to avenge last year's defeat every last lehigh man should make it his business to give the foot ball team the support it deserves let's all travel down to rutgers and cheer our boys on to another victory remember
