new members dashifsky seasholtz luckenbach taken in edward c luckenbach ch e f46 william dashifsky e p j46 and elwood f seasholtz e p j46 were initiated into tau beta pi in a ceremony held at 5:30 p.m on friday august 24 in room 453 of packard laboratory the initiation ceremony was presided over by president ed manning e e f46 assisted by treasurer dick craig e p f46 tau bete alumni attending in cluded doctors earl serfass and harry ullman professors m c stuart a a diefenderfer and fred larkin and charles eichen berger e e graduated of lehigh following the ceremony the meeting adjourned to lamberton hall where a chicken dinner awaited them the chicken de molished eichenberger who grad uated from lehigh in 1939 and is now employed at bethlehem steel presented a short talk on prac tical engineering the last item on the program consisted of a short impromptu speech by each of the new initiates in order to be eligible for mem bership in tau beta pi national honorary engineering society a senior must be in the top fifth of his class while a junior must be in the top eighth of his class men are selected on the basis of char acter and leadership as well as scholarship the chapter founded at lehigh in 1885 was the first in the coun try the society has since spread all over the country and is now well known as one of the finest of national organizations home club testimonial for smiley the lehigh home club honored mr e kenneth smiley vice pres ident and administrative head of lehigh university since july 1 at the testimonial dinner held thurs day aug 23 in the hotel beth lehem and was reassured full co operation and support in the uni versity's rebuilding program by alumni faculty and trustees mr smiley predicted a sturdy upbuilding in the facilities and at tendance of the university as it faces the post-war reconversion period he continued by saying that the going would be difficult but that the lehigh men like it that way he expressed the en couragement felt as a result of such loyalty exhibited at the din ner the speakers of the evening all expressed their pleasure in the choice of mr smiley as vice pres ident of the university eugene g grace speaking for the board of trustees expressed the confidence of the board of trustees that mr smiley's administration would be a highly successful one mr grace said that if a president could be found who would do his job as well as mr smiley is doing the job of vice president we would have an administration team sec ond to none in its history he further went on to say that there would be no decisions made until the right man is found dr k coneen president of the home club served as chairman the other principal speakers of the evening were dean wray h congdon dr nevin e funk and mr herbert j hartzog attend ing were alumni members of the lehigh faculty and friends of the institution approximately 125 guests were present for the din ner m&c presents b way hit snafu the extravaganza to be presented by lehigh's talented mustard and cheese club is rap idly approaching perfection a tremendous hit snafu ran on broadway for seven months george abbott's great farce-com edy will reach its highest pinnacle when it will be presented at beth lehem's famous civic theater on four never-to-be-forgotten nights wednesday through saturday sept 26 27 28 and 29 snafu meaning situation normal all fouled up is a story about a sixteen year old kid who enlists in the service is honorably discharged and has civilian re adjustment troubles starring as the kid ronald ste vens is portrayed by that famous tragic character versatile come dian and president of the well known troup al goodman ron ald's old man will be austere fatherly dick mac adams a tender probing performance is expected of jon believes surplus jeeps will be released for civilian con sumption at a reasonably cheap price after the initial buying surge has died down jeeps cost the army between 900-$looo they would probably sell at a slightly higher price jeeps could do a number of jobs in civilian life just as they have in the army they could take the place of any small utility truck or with the aid of built-in four the united states should have peace time conscription tone takes 6 new members tone the university society which is dedicated to the appre ciation of fine music elected six men to its membership last fri day evening aug 21 the elec tion of these new members is the culmination of a concentrated drive to enlist those students who are genuinely interested in music and are lacking the neophytic ap proach the students chosen for mem bership are malcomn schvey al vin farans richard macadams ralph graber merton cohen and richard johnson at the meeting it was decided to initiate these men at the next scheduled meet ing of the musical society the newly elected were chosen after first meeting and fulfilling the traditional and primary re quisite for joining tone this task is to present a theme on any of the three concepts of tone these concepts interpretation composi tion and appreciation must be adequately under limits of 400 to 700 words in length the activities of tone comprise musical programs selected from both the major and minor classics which are heard and enjoyed at the regular meetings of the so t ciety these meetings usaully oc cur every two or three weeks dr shields the faculty adviser is of ten on hand to interpret the mu sical selections for the benefit of the members scl features rosalyntureck lehigh university's student concert lecture committee has arranged for concert-lecture committee has also been active in arranging musical programs in the future as a matter of fact on jan 11 the don cossack chorus a well - known russian male chorus will appear before the stu dents of lehigh the famed piano quartet is also on the list of plan ned artists to perform under the auspices of the committee in order to obtain a fair repre sentation in choosing the guest artists both a student and faculty member have contributed their time and effort both professor curtis registrar and harry kern of alpha tau omega have done the major part of preparing for these recitals with the success ful presentation of the planned programs the students of lehigh will be able to finally derive bene fit from the fee that they have been paying every semester brown and white noon saturday marks end of frosh rules cyanide announces that freshman regulations will terminate at 12 noon saturday september 1 wearing the brown dink and brown socks will no longer be compulsory
