got a lot of pledges put the time m to do well those that were laid back and relied on their reputation weren't as suc cessful change seems to have been the theme for this year s fraternity rush the new greek affairs coordinator scott walter the implementation of a 2.0 minimum grade point average the cancellation of the day of silence and a formal post rush convocation contributed to the changes m the rush process last saturday was bid day and 301 menacceptedbids.aboutadozen more than last year across the country however walter said fraternity and sorority numbers are going down it is just a sign today's students have different needs and wants than they had five years ago walter said students are starting to look at college as an investment not a four year time to have fun for the greek system to remain strong they are going to have to hoerdemann encouraged all houses to partici pate m the formal post-rush convocation on wednes day he thinks many houses will be post-rushing by this time the reality has hit he said the houses are starting to think seriously about their numbers and many of them are realizing that they don't have enough ifc president ben malekzadeh 95 said this is the first year the minimum gpa for pledging is a 2.0 he said there were a number of freshmen rushees who did not make the cutoff and he talked about the appeal process for people who had close to a 2.0 we gave them the opportunity to appeal makkzadch said if they had a good reason we approved their appeal we received 24 appeals and approved 13 we 11 be keeping an eye on them however and if they coordina tor praised the members for a successful rush 1 want to congratulate those houses that reached their rush goals walter said to those who didn't i'm offer ing my help he encouraged the houses to make sure that pledges who have accepted bids sign those bids he also encour aged houses to post-rush if they have spaces to fill rush chairman eric hocrdemann 96 said this is the first year the ifc will be holding a formal post-rush period there s a surprising pool of freshmen still interested m rushing hoerdemann said there's a huge pool of people who lost touch with the greek system some have weak nesses tony mcmillan novelist briefly described the plot m which a group of adult children have disappointed their mother m some way when do you let them go and when can you pre tend you're not their mother any more mcmillan said after reading the excerpt mcmillan talked about the meaning of her messages and her concerns about children that grow up without fathers she said this happens too often m today's black society ' there ' s too many men out here i know that make babies that don't take care of them and that bothers me a lot mcmillan said it doesn't take a lot of money for them to be there mcmillan said she writes about things that disturb her 1 write about things the way that i hope that they one day could be and m order to do that i have to paint the worst case scenario and hopefully ar rive at a place that is a little bit different she said mcmillan was asked by audience members why she negatively portrays black men she said she does not focus her writing on the negative aspects of men but she does try to create a more equal realistic picture of women and men m her books 1 don't write about perfect women either award-winning novelist terry mcmillan spoke at packard auditorium monday night as a part of lehigh s celebration of black history month mcmillan gave the audience a sneak preview of her almost finished book which is about the trials of a modern black family from perspectives of different family members mcmillan was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m but was an hour late due to bad weather conditions she was coming from queens n.y and the trip she thought would take two hours took four hours about three-quarters of the audience waited even after an announcement was made cancel ing her appearance mcmillan soon arrived and apologized to them
