excursion to buck island for a snorkeling trip it was a fantastic part of our trip laura greenwald,'96 said we saw some of the best underwa ter creatures out there greenwald's favorite part of the trip was the free time the perfor mances took place m the evening so during the day they were on their own a typical day consisted of waking up having a quick breakfast and then enjoying a leisurely day at the beach green wald said we could do whatever we wanted greenwald said she added that while some choir members chose to rest on the beach others found more excitement m tour very proud about how the group per formed metallo said linda molyneux 98 one of the youngest members of the group said that the trip's success had a lot to do with the direction of metallo i loved the trip and i really enjoy singing for vincent molyneux said he is so enthusiastic which is some thing that is so important to our group molyneux said the trip was a great opportunity to interact with all mem bers of the choir m a way that she had not before because we spent so much time together on the trip i feel as though i really got to know the group well molyneux said molyneux also said the choir maintains a chemistry within their music and each other to produce the best music possible i love being a member of the choir because not only do i love music but i love the people too molyneux said as the cold air of winter de scended on students lehigh s cho ral group spent the week of january 8 15 performing m the tropical sun of the virgin islands the 45-member group toured the islands of st croix st johns and st thomas the choir per formed m small towns at various schools and churches the tour s specific programcon sisted of various types of music including folk spiritual holiday and a specialized jazz ensemble the group is conducted by vis iting assistant professor of music at lehigh vincent metallo he is tak ing the place of former director steven sametz who is on sabbati cal for i.ikins said we of fered an early retirement plan to faculty and staff members age 58 and over who have been employed by lehigh for at least 10 years the retirement plan cut the faculty and staff by 122 members who will not be replaced the process of restruc turing squeezing and con straining costs has been ac complished painfully likins said the 90s are all about distributing pain and both the people who are paying tuition and the people who work here are feeling it likins said insti tutions throughout the country such as health care busi ness and govern ment are going through the same kind of restructur ing process our cost cut ting is just the local manifestation at lehigh of the gen eral economic stress facing the nation likins lehigh's tuition increase for the 1995-96 year will be 5 1 percent the smallest percent increase m 25 years it will also be the seventh year m a row that the percent of increase has gone down although the actual amount of money remains the same tuition will increase from 18,700 to 19,650 room and board will increase 4 per cent from 5,580 to 5,810 since 1990 the university has cut 10.1 million from its budget and plans to cut another 5.5 million next year lehigh president peter likins said this is accomplished through cost cutting and restruc please see tuition page 4 said this economic stress will also be felt by students who need financial aid over the last five years we've tried to maintain a commitment to meet the financial needs of our students but we can no longer meetthiscommitment,"likinssaid."weshould still be able to meet 95 percent or group features several other renowned musicians besides metheny lyle mays is the keyboardist and a co-writer of much of the group's music mays has been per forming with metheny since the group's inception m 1977 steve rodby is an acoustic and electric bassist paul wertico is the drummer david blamires is a vo calist guitaristand composer mark ledfordis is a vocalist and multi instumentalist and lusi conte is a percussionist students had very positive reac combining a distinctive sound of jazz fusion or jazz mixed with funk and other musical styles the pat metheny group performed at lehigh s lower grace hall friday night the group has received public notoriety after collecting six grammy awards and critical praise for their past six consecutive record ings the concert presented by the jazz coalition of lehigh was sup ported by student senate the depart ment of music and the office of cultural affairs the concert lasted around two and a half hours and had a good showing but
