brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 23 friday december 9 1994 all the lehigh news first psi upsilon slapped with two-year probation by andrea mc cloud assistant news editor the brothers of psi upsilon fra ternity never fathomed their thurs day night party on oct 27 would turn into the tremendous disaster that caused the resignations of both the president and social chairman it did the problems started when seth herman,'9b was found in the psi u library intoxicated and suffering hypothermia after a night of heavy drinking herman had passed out in the unheated room jack goodwin,'97 a psi u brother found him we found out that he needed to be taken to the hospital so we acted responsibly and took him and that was our downfall michael bor 96 former president said mark erickson dean of student life viewed this as an extraordinarily seriouscase resulting in serious sanc tions they acted recklessly to al low this person to become intoxi cated he said the dissolution of their charter was a possibility considered how ever due to the honesty of the broth ers and help from their alumni and national advisors psi u did not meet with their demise erickson said instead they were given two years probation and a live-in adviser to be chosen by their alumni and national advisers and approved by the uni versity both the president michael bor 96 and social chairman paul schnitzer 95 were asked to resign placed on disciplinary probation and must participate in substance abuse programming to inform other frater nity officers of their legal and ethical responsibilities by the spring 95 se mester this will give them a chance to have a period of two years to demon suate alcohol is not a big part of their house erickson said in a sense we're thankful we weren't dissolved but all the same we still have a huge challenge ahead of us bor said because he held the position of president bor who wasn't present at the party was found guilty by lehigh of intentionally or recklessly causing physical harm to a person on or near the lehigh campus or at activities sponsored by or affiliated with lehigh or causing reasonable apprehension of such harm bor will be tried by the common wealth of pennsylvania on jan 17 for selling or furnishing alcohol to a minor bor was disappointed because of his forced resignation but said that's the least of my problems due to the criminal charges that are pending sexual orientation not a part of diversity * name is changed for privacy mary 98 a young hispanic woman from new york city was actively recruited by lehigh before she made her decision to attend lehigh she asked administra tion members about the campus cli mate concerning homosexuals spe cifically whether or not the univer sity had a gay andß x u a 1 1 grouponcam 1 mary is i sheß was to a i population that supports her sexual identity and understands the day-to-day problems a bisexual encounters she was told by lehigh admis sions that an organization existed on campus but received no other infor mation when she visited campus during a minority recruitment weekend the admissions office put her in touch with a gay staff member at lehigh he too told her that he had heard of a campus group but was unaware of its current status eventually however mary de cided to attend lehigh she liked the advancements lehigh seemed to be making in minority issues and wanted to be a part of the changing process the only thing about lehigh that bothered me she said was the thought of having to suppress my sexuality for four years mary was busy during orienta tion and enjoyed her first days on campus however after things settled down she began to feel uncomfortable i felt that i had to sneak around mary said i felt a lot of inner pressure to start my own gay and lesbian club be cause i thought that there was none here i had to find something or i was going to explode she turned back to the adminis tration for assistance this time people were a little more helpful i asked them about the organi zation on campus again mary said they told me they weren't sure about its status they said there was a gay professor on campus maybe in the english department but they weren't sure all i wan ted was alittle bit of assistance haw photo hy rebecca muri'hey christiaan adams 96 tunes his violin to the electric guitar of rob connor graduate student at open mic night on dec 3 this was the last time that open mic night will be held in the lehigh cafe because the cafe will be renovated into a food court starting in december the ulrich student center also has larger rooms and better acoustics quayles chair parents committee by bear sebastian news writer dan and marilyn quayle have been named the co-chairs for the 1995 parents committee they are next in a line of well-known chairs that includes former new jersey governor thomas kean the former u.s vice president and the indiana attorney accepted the positions on oct 22 of this year while on campus for upperclass par ents weekend the idea had originally been pro posed last july but in october the quayles met with kirk col ton direc tor of the parents committee and mike bolton vice president for ad vancement to accept their new re sponsibilities until this point lehigh has tried to treat the quayles as ordinary par ents and many in the administration including colton and lehigh presi dent peter likins are pleased that they have taken on the new positions being sensitive to the demands on their time their new duties as chair people are in keeping with their many other responsibilities colton said the lending of the quayle name to lehigh's parents committee will most likely be an influential factor in fund raising and support to the uni versity in 1 989 the committee raised ap proximately 50,000 since then when colton took on the full-time position as director of the parents committee the funds raised have increased annually in 1994 over 246,000 has
