ulrich student center debuts in grace hall by rebecca russell news writer hiv invades college campuses please see ulrich page 4 baw photo by david j baker makk lawrence 95 enjoys a sub sandwich at the new ulrich student center students explored new territory monday wandering the new ulrich student center in search of their new private mailboxes and an alternative to regular campus food the student center located in upper grace hall offers a wide range of activities and facilities including the new post office stu dent mailboxes a sub shop a gourmet coffee bar a dunkin donuts stand an arcade and pool tables the center also houses the student activi ties council office a mac machine will be added in about two weeks ulrich offers a place for students to relax and study jennifer volchko assistant dean of student life said there was no real living room for the campus volchko said the idea for a living room on campus arose about 1 0 years ago volchko said when different groups expressed an interest in a please see museum page 4 to honor and remember the 11 million victims of one of the most horrific periods in history approximately 90 students and faculty visited the u.s holocaust memorial museum in washington d.c on sunday the trip to the museum was sponsored by the jewish student center jewish studies religion studies and the chaplain's office claudia schippert adjunct instructor of re ligion studies teaches a class called holo caust history and meaning resistance and response she said the holocaust was a term developed between the years 1933 and 1945 in germany it talks about the extermina tion of 1 1 million people six million of the 11 million that were exterminated by the nazi party which was lead by hitler were jews schippert said the museum displays include photographs of people who lived in towns that were wiped out by the holocaust actual shoes of victims murdered by the nazis and films about survi vors recounting personal experiences in con centration camps students of diverse religious backgrounds attended the four-hour bus trip to the museum for different reasons alizastern 98 became interested in learn ing more about the holocaust after being ex posed to the history of it almost all her life i have a very close connection to the holo caust because my grandfather was a survivor and my middle name comes from my great aunt who was murdered in the holocaust stem said schippert believes this is the most impor tant museum in the united states she said people should visit to learn about the holocaust because of the incredible amount of material collected there the museum in washington is fairly re cent and it was constructed solely for the purpose of remembering the holocaust schippert said sara zuckerman 98 found the experience just as meaningful on her second trip to the holocaust museum * names imve been changed to protect anonymity i told the nurse that i was here for my results she brought me back to the room where the doctor was the guy looked at my stuff and gave me the sheet he circled the results and said this means you're positive 1 said oh and then i said positive as in a bad thing and he went uh huh it has been almost one year since chris a lehigh student found out that he was hiv positive it didn't really hit me the week end i found out i was hiv positive please see hiv page 3 never informed me i had to end up finding out through various methods he said like so many college students infected with hiv chris needed to confront issues he never had to deal with before he realized that although he was educated about hiv and aids he felt he should learn more about it since he was now hiv positive many questions arose now as to what he should do i was thinking maybe i should take time off he said maybe i chris said it didn't hit me until the next monday in lab i hadn't slept most of that weekend but that mon day in lab -
