september the scl's chairman harry b kern arts oct 45 also announc ed that probably margaret speaks soprano will appear for a concert sometime in september of this year dr edgar t shields speaking for the cleaver foundation said that plans are almost complete for the presentation of the opera martha sometime in february no extra charge for dates the cleaver foundation is an organization which was instituted to provide concerts and lectures to the students of lehigh university and to the bethlehem populace free of charge for the past few semesters the cleaver fund has been pooled with the scl fund in order to raise a sum large enough to bring artists to the campus this was necessary because the student enrollment and consequently the scl resources was quite small mr kern also announced that by special vote of the scl com mittee students attending scl functions for the next two semes ters would be allowed to bring dates at no additional charge the scl committee consists of registrar g b curtis dr e t shields and prof c a shook faculty members and harry kern eh ted shook len jeffery dick craig mcl ramberg and dick macadams student mem bers dot holds first debate under the able chairmanship of professor herbert diamond on friday evening july 20 delta omicron theta held its debate on friedrich hayek's book the road to serfdom the society's president jack tuberty opened the debate with a speech for the affirmative in which he stated that dr hayek's book was a warning and america should not follow the same path as germany and italy challenging mr tuberty's state ment richard macadams of the negative declared that there was no need for alarm america was built on the democratic system and would not tolerate such totalitar ian forms of government as grew up in germany and italy malcolm schvey another speaker for the negative said that it was absurd to assume that planning would lead to a socialist form of gevernment the democratic countries of nor way sweden and switzerland had had planning for many years and it had not affected their govern ment in the least after the formal debate pro fessor rights of the english de partment gave some comments on behalf of government planning he said that business was scornful of government interference in times of prosperity but when misfor tune occurred business was only too willing to drop its problem children in the lap of the govern ment professor rights also said that business had repeatedly taken advantage of the government and cited the case of the railroads as an example mr robert wood ward of bethlehem a harvard graduate in liberal arts defended dr hayek's book very ably with exitensive knowledge of economic theories after mr woodward and pro fessor rights had finished speak ing the debate was opened to the relatively large audience as sembled in the library browsing room biology department offers three courses the biology department will probably be quite inactive this semester due to the lack of a large number of biology majors so few biology majors are left in the university that the depart ment is offering only three courses these courses are biol 13 which is given for men who are not ma joring in biology biol 1 which is a course for freshmen who in tend to major in biology and biol 2 which is for more advanced bi ology majors due to the comparative inactiv ity of develops a certain sequence and no teacher can do anything about it except to go along with it dr emrnett a betts research professor and di rector of the reading clinic in the school of education at pennsylva nia state college told teachers of lehigh university's summer work shop yesterday morning devoting the first part of his talk to explaining the wide range of reading ability which exists at any particular grade level dr betts illustrated his point by de scribing an actual seventh grade classroom where student's facility in reading included abilities all the way from pre-primer level to sec ond year college stating that reading requires a background of experience obser vation andl discussion before it be comes meaningful to the learner the speaker cited cases where stu dents in higher grades with low reading ability were able to raise it by starting at the lowest level and working back up picking up the experience previously missed arcadia palm prom tickets go on sale ken keeley's orchestra and magician are featured at first prom of semester on saturday evening the fourth of august the palm prom the first dance of this semester will be presented by arcadia in grace hall between 10 and 2 o'clock this dance will no doubt be the big event of the semester • some thing new is being added to the dance this time decorations for grace hall the decorations will consist completely of palms hence the dis tinctive name the palm prom was given to it still another treat is in store for you as the band will be none other than k<en keeley's famous band which will go directly from le high to an engagement at the uni verstiy of pennsylvania from there he will continue to hamid's million dollar pier and steel pier 4n atlantic city these two spots which have long had a reputation for featuring the most famous bands in the country are known all up and down the atlantic coast and the fact that the band is go ing to play at both these places should be a good indication of the band's merits the tickets will go on sale wed nesday july 25 and will sell for the reduced rate of 3.60 until the wednesday before the dance at which time they are to be raised to the regular price of 4.00 the tickets may be purchased until that time from the heads of the living groups the supply bureau and the arcadia office as an extra added attraction there will be excellent entertain ment during the intermission by that noted magician richard c fuehrer during the intermission mr fuehrer will perform his amazing feats of magic which have long been renowned in this section dean foresees 2-semester year in an interview monday dean of undergraduates wray h cong don stated that it is the aim of lehigh university to return to the peacetime two semesters per year plan as soon as possible at present the committee on educational policy is studying the problem however dean cong don further said that as long as there are boys under 18 who want to get two or three semesters in college before entering the armed services and as long as there are returning veterans whose college careers have been interrupted for several years and want to finish their college work without delay opportunities for acceleration must be provided the number of faculty members is beginning to increase again a new plan has been authorized whereby each member of the fac ulty will be able to take an eight weeks vacation each year a num ber of the staff are away for the first eight weeks of the present semester and others will take off the second part of the semester some regular staff members who have been on leave of absence have returned for this semester these include dr fornoff of the chemistry department dr scott of the physics department and dr wright of the latin department 20 answer call for dance band twenty prospective musicians answered the call for the lehigh collegians the school dance band in drown hall thursday night after the boys ran through sev eral songs frank anderson held auditions for the permanent posi tions frank anderson has announced that the following men will play with the band saxaphones ander continued on page 3 ed hall stood out with his solid renditions at the keyboard bob saydah starred in the trumpet sec tion and morton cohen was the best of the saxaphones scl brings don cossack group here brown & white lehigh university troupe of 27 voices engaged for july 17th the student concert - lecture committee announced last friday july 13th that the gen platoff don cossack russian chorus has been engaged for a program to be given in the auditorium of broughal high school this group of entertainers will appear here on friday january 11 1946 the don cossacks appeared on the campus several semesters ago and because of the very
