people us i who don't have pre i conceived notions we know their values marshack said the band spends a lot of time with each other and discusses issues such as the state of our society we seem to be locked in a mindset where any kind of adventure is good any new development is good and they don't the members who align them selves with the twentysomething gen eration signed to sire records after being on many indie labels accord ing to marshack sire records is more open to suggestions and gives the band more freedom than other labels they have been on it s very frustrat ing to make something and have someone alter it marshack said their new ep just like you will be out in a few weeks and in february their full length album jun ior citizen will be released their forthcoming albums reflect the free dom they have gained by signing with sire these new recordings that we have coming out are the closest we've got to getting what we want valentin said marshack said if you are happy with what ryan's tenure as chair man of the geological sciences de partment he witnessed and helped to institutionalize many changes in the geology department he had unbounded loyalty to the institution and the professor emeritus of geo logical sciences died last tuesday at the age of 73 in his hellertown home ryan graduated from lehigh in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in geology he began his teaching ca reer as a graduate assistant in 1952 and eventually became chairman of the geological sciences department in 1961 he retired in 1984 after 32 years on the lehigh faculty ryan received a master's of this looking like he is the good guy mautz said when in reality he should have done this a long time ago gayle said that likins decision put him in a difficult position it puts him between a rock and a hard place because the faculty and administration aren't interested in an outdoor ceremony because they have been less than successful in the past gayle said but it's our graduation not the faculty's so we should be able to have it where we want to patti ota vice provost and associ wishes of their classmates we were very persistent gayle said we came in with the mind set that we wanted an outdoor ceremony based on the suggestions we received from students and parents we tried to accommodate everyone because we are the only medium between the students and the administration gayle prepared a questionnaire last may that was sent to seniors over the summer asking their opinions on the site of graduation and the choice of a commencement speaker exact results were not available but gayle was told that opinions of seniors and their parents ran four to one in favor of an outdoor ceremony one of the main reasons both parents and students preferred an outdoor graduation is there will be no limit to the number of people each student for the first time in three years spring commencement ceremonies will be held outdoors julie gayle 95 president of the senior class announced this week end that a decision was reached be tween class officers and lehigh presi dent peter likins to hold the 1995 commencement ceremonies at mur ray h goodman stadium on may 28 last year graduation was held indoors at stabler arena and convo cation center angering many stu dents who disagreed with the deci sion and felt as though they had no say in the process gayle said this year's officers were determined to represent the insisted on an indoor graduation be cause it was the easiest thing to do mautz said from my understand ing last year there was really no dis cussion between the class
