playing guinea pigs in a new training program beginning sept 19 the program will last approxi mately three weeks during which the new djs will attend one class a week and two lab sessions the classes held during the week will cover federal communications commission rules and regulations wlvr policies and operation of the studio equipment the two labs will be held during an actual radio show where the new djs will be able to watch a veteran wlvr dj and ask questions about the show's format the decision to change the nature of the dj training program was initi ated after wlvr's executive board not want any judgements attached to them we are sending out the 1 500 letters to those who did not state an affiliation the jewish student center wanted to clarify that one does not need to be jewish to live there graduate student kurd vasta a resident but not a member of the the jewish students at lehigh we can't lose the hillel name pam lott the director of the house under the jewish student advisory council said that is the name every one knows and remembers we hope to get more students connected with the center by helping to broaden the base though the exact number of jew ish students at lehigh are unknown the center plans to send out informa tion and questionnaires to 1 500 stu dents to inform them about the cen ter lehigh keeps track of religious hillel renamed for recognition in an effort to become more recog nizable to lehigh s jewish students the jewish student advisory council has changed the name of the hillel house to the jewish student center the house has traditionally been a residential building the new name is part of an effort to turn the location into more of a place to meet and hold events such as bagel brunches shabbat din ners and hanukkah parties the orga richards and dravo to repair pipeline by abb asia khan news writer the bulldozer and the gaping hole in the ground are a dead giveaway that something is wrong and stu dents living in the freshmen quad have been questioning why the hulk ing machine is in their front lawn gary falasca director of facili ties services said the excavation in front of richards house was to repair sink hole damage done to a pipe excavation began on thursday but the period of construction will depend on the extent of damage the wlvr begins new d j training program b w pholo by marc calabrese a bulldozer outside the freshmen quad stands next to the pipeline excavation please see pipeline page 4 workers find when they start open ing the pipe the cost of repairing the pipe has not been set due to the depth and size of the pipe it will probably be very expen sive because of the depth of the pipe and some other utilities that are cross ing over that line that will have to be supported falasca said we couldn't tell con ference members of the board found wlvr s training did not measure up to other colleges programs we realized that most schools have an active training program and we didn't have anything wlvr's program director melanie walsh 96 said to resolve some of the problems in the studio due to poor training the three week training program was pro posed although this is a big step for wlvr walsh said other colleges have an intensive 1 1 week training for their new djs the old training program for wlvr consisted of one hour long session in the studio at this time an executive board member would point out everything in the studio and at tempt to thoroughly go over wlvr policies bridget marshall 96 wlvr's general manager said the idea be hind this training program was that if a disc jockey was in the studio and didn't know what to do they would learn faster what to do however this didn't happen marshall said even for those djs who had decent shows their first se mester at wlvr their shows could have been much better if the djs had been better prepared the environment for the new pro gram will not resemble a classroom setting the trainers will not be lectur ing walsh said it will be a forum where the trainee can ask questions walsh also said the trainers will create scenarios and what if situa tions to prepare the new djs during the training sessions there will be opportunity for
