university center the purpose for parking meters is to create space to run in and collect a package chris tian said adding that the time limit creates more spaces by getting people to leave as quickly as possible the cost of the parking meters is 60 cents per minute which christian admits is expen sive but said the purpose of the meters is to keep people from parking at the spots for long peri ods of time with the excess going toward operating costs corallo said it will cost ap proximately 12,000 per space for the 350 spaces and 28,000 for each additional parking space at grace hall christian said the parking deck will stand on the cor ner of e packer av enue and fillmore street and will con tain a ramped garage with four levels and an elevator the plans call for the deck to be entered through the third floor of the arts center where it will meet the elevator corallo said there could be a fee for faculty staff and student parking permits after the parking deck is completed but right now there are no definite plans to institute a fee christian said ' there will probably not be a charge to park in the deck un less there is a gen eral charge insti tuted for parking throughout campus the issue of charging for park ing at lehigh is be ing looked at there has not been a deci sion not to charge or to charge for parking here christian said he added that there is a possibility of a charge for parking at special events at the arts center somewhat like parking at stabler arena there is a cost to maintain each parking spot on campus christian said and there has al a new 350-car parking corallo said the cost of the deck has been estimated at 4.2 million total construction costs for the arts center and parking deck will be 26 mil lion but 33 million in funds are earmarked by writer three-year period in addition to the new track and field complex there are also new tennis facilities aftersustainingdam age due to the harsh winter the out door tennis courts have been repaved and are in the process of being re painted one section of the courts will open up this week and the other section will open next week the indoor tennis center has also been completed but is currently be ing used exclusively by members of the men's and women's tennis teams the facility will open for public use as soon as scheduling and staff ing problems are solved but sterrett said the target date for public use will be sometime around mid-october the tennis center will function much like a country club or tennis club with students faculty and staff paying a nominal membership fee the reason for the membership fee is not to deter people from play ing but to keep courts open for those who want to play in a more profes sional environment sterrett said the outdoor courts and the indoor practicing and meets and it allows for recruits to see a nice facility fred laplante track and field and cross country coach said it gives us much more of a whole feeling it brings commitment and team unity tiberin patterson assistant track and field coach in charge of sprints and hurdles agrees the new track is a special thing for hurdlers and is a fast track more of a racing track patterson said students agree with this assessment as well carly lynch 98 a member of the field hockey team said the track gives you more lift and it is wider then any track i have run on the track was constructed as part of the master campus maintenance plan which was put together by the lehigh facilities services the track was funded by a combi nation of a deferred maintenance fund by facilities services the operations budget for goodman campus and a portion of funds from outside events athletic director joe sterrett would not comment on the total cost of the track which will be paid for over a hawi>lu by mark rubins the women's tennis team practices at the indoor tennis courts as part of a commitment to pro vide first-rate facilities for lehigh's athletic program a new outdoor track and a new tennis center were con structed on the murray h goodman campus over the summer it has been 20 years since the outdoor track was resurfaced and four years since a track and field event was held at lehigh but the new track installed behind the football practice fields should change this the track a dark orange polymer surface called rekortan provides nine lanes for running and another lane for practicing as well as two pole vault runways and four triple jump runways this track facility will allow the lehigh track and field team to prac tice at home instead of at moravian college for the first time in four years it is also hoped that the new track will attract other schools to use the facility for meets we have a top notch track for parking deck added spaces planned for early spring by mark filipps
