ner meeting held last sunday af ternoon in lamberton hall all members of the class of june 1945 the new members harry kern edwin piesk both arts chems robert curtis e.p and joseph rengert 1.e were initiated at the meeting presided over by president edgar riley associate professor of english dean palmer retiring secretary was the speaker of the afternoon discussing german culture toler ance and religion describing jos eph lessig an 18th century ger man pan-theist who wrote a play on tolerance which was burned by the nazis during their regime acting dean of the college of arts and sciences robert more replaced dean palmer as secre tary of the society an office held by the dean for many years among the 21 members present were two women phi betes mrs robert laramy and mrs george curtis baer with us . . . we appreciate the work of the brown and white in spite of the editorials that we have been getting lately words to this effect were uttered by dean palmer at the recent flag pole exercises perhaps the remark was made in jest we certainly hope so but if it were not it is a matter that calls for serious thinking the recent editorials which evidently displeased the administration concerned the wretched conditions in the physics department the eternal problem of houseparty weekends and finally the drown mem orial hall renovation these subjects were chosen by the brown and white editorial council in accordance with its editorial policy the opinions expressed in the editorials are not the views of merely one man the editorial opinions expressed in the brown and white rep resent the opinions of the council in turn fully representative of stu dent opinion unless the editorial is signed on consulting authorities it has been said that we have not consulted the proper authori ties before publishing an editorial this point is surely unfounded before publishing the article on the physics department a member of the editorial council consulted with dr bidwell the head of the de partment to get the facts first hand the editorial was written with the full consent of dr bidwell who later on also expressed his appro val of the article if this editorial displeased authorities higher than the head of the department we still feel that we have met and dis cussed our opinions with a responsible source insofar as editorial opinion is permitted surely we must be granted the privelege of dis cussing a problem which affects a good portion of the student body to a great extent the article concerning houseparty was purely an editorial of opin ion members of the brown and white staff had repeatedly discussed the problem with students and members of student government these in turn talked to the administration officers concerning houseparty when the editorial was written brown and white was expressing valid opinion of the students who were deeply concerned about the unfortunate relations existing between the dean and the students in this matter most assuredly the brown and white has a right to reveal student opinion when it concerns the social and moral welfare of the student body as a whole editorials show student interest then followed a series of editorials about the drown hall renovation the plans had been submitted to mr litzenberger who confirmed the feasibility of the idea the editorials were purely an outgrowth of student interest and were represented as such we therefore see ab solutely no reason for any objection to our editorial policy on this count it is true that sometimes we do not consult with the highest authori ties but that must be attributed to the unfortunate fact that many members of the faculty deliberately withhold information and there fore do not give the brown and white its necessary support a recent incident should be cited to illustrate this statement a brown and white reporter was recently sent to one of the deans to cover a story the reporter was practically thfown out because the dean had no time to waste on a lowly reporter and asked that one of the editors come in does that encourage responsible journalism by the way the editors were unfortunately also too busy editorials are constructive in other words we think that our editorial policy is entirely re sponsible we try to make our editorials constructive and they should be appreciated as such we are not merely trying to tear down we think it is our job to suggest to try to improve and to justify student opinion in general this is what we consider valid journalism free dom of the press is the right guaranteed to us as thinking democratic citizens in conclusion we would like to quote samuel johnson every man has a right to utter what he thinks truth and every other man has a right to knock him down for it arcadia sets plans for last piom event tickets must be obtained from living groups rader's orchestra to play lyn merkle vocalist somewhere somehow somewhy on saturday june 2 there will be a conclave on south
