evening first of series lingle high scorer meet held in afternoon some good material left for nucleus of five next season roy and morehouse under quar antine will be unable to wrestle lehigh's swimming team closed its season for the year 1921 last saturday at the intercollegiates al though they were victors in only one out of five meets on the schedule the mermen can be proud of their efforts for all of the matches were against colleges which are known to have the best teams in the east swimming at lehigh has only been in vogue for two years and m this short time a championship ag gregation could hardly be expected lehigh's record at the intercollegi aites in which they took second place is a highly commendable one for the amateur swimmers lehigh's one victory of the season was at hoboken over the stevens team the brown and white swimmers rolled up a score of 37 tc 16 against their opponents doing the best work of the season the meet with johns hopkins in taylor gym resulted in a 34-37 score in favor of the visitors how ever the meet was undecided until the very last events and a first place in the back stroke swim gave hop kins the victory swimming fans still remember the stiff oposition the brown and white men put up against their opponents amherst gave lehigh the hardest trouncing of the year when they took the meet in taylor gym by a 41-12 score lehigh fared almosit as bad at west point but both of these colleges have swimming teams that are hard to beat in fact at amherst swimming is one of the most important sports the past season has seen the shat tering of four pool records at le high three of these were broken by amherst and one by lehigh damon of amherst set up a new record for the 50-yard dash doing that distance in 5 1-5 seconds whit comb set the record for the 220 yard swim at 2.45 3-5 while the amherst relay team swam the course in 1.48 3-5 the other new record which has been established this year is in th plunge in which regad did a dis tance of 66 feet in the meet with johns hopkins van nort has been by far the most valuable man on the squad he scored twenty-five points almost ? fourth of the total points accumu lated by the team van nort was one of the most versatile of swim mers seen in collegiate circles this continued on page four tonight in the auditorium of the south side high school the com bined musical clubs will give their first concert of the season this concert will be followed by several other engagements in the vicinity and in neighboring cities the club has been working very conscientiously in the last two months preparing for the opening of the season and in spite of the fact that at the last moment several members were suddenly taken ill a very attractive program has been prepared tonight's program is as follows : program : 1 mandolin orchestra a martin march bitting b scarf dance .. . chaminadt 2 tenor solo selected a r little 22 3 mando quartette a ballabile capricioso bickford b celeste aida verdi 4 just a little jazz f j reif 23 5 glee club the sword of ferrara 6 mandolin ( rchestra a hungarian march kiesta b overture lustspiel kela-bela 7 male quartette tripoli 8 mandolin duet a napoli mezzacapo b czardas sgattan deturk and eitner fulmer reif accompanist 9 glee club wake miss lindy alma mater lehigh is one of the first colleges to abandon the old idea of the man dolin club and develop the more modern mandolin orchestra it has a complete orchestration this year consisting not only of mandolins and guitars which limited the reper toire but has aded such instruments as the mando-cello and mandola to complete the full voicing of the or chestra an orchestra of this sort is more of an exception to the rule an added attraction to the con cert is the dance held immediately afterward for which no additional fee is charged with the low price of seventy-five cents it is expected that every student can attend and should attend as this is just as much a college function and a part of col lege affairs as a football game or track meet all members of the faculty are also urged to be pres ent the club asks for the support of the college the athletic committee of the inter fraternity council has com pleted all arrangements for the an nual basketball tournament and has also planned a pool tournament to be run in connection with basket ball . it is being so arranged that no conflicts between the two may be encountered and if contests in both can be successfully worked to gether it is hoped that the pool tour nament will become an annual af fair there may be some difficulty in finding a convenient time to play off the basketball schedule inasmuch as taylor gym is the only accessible place and varsity sports at present have commandeered practically all floor space the most feasible plan has been found to roster the odd moments at which either the upper or lower gym floors can be used and permit a representative of each fraternity team to make engage ments in advance for the floors pro viding such time is convenient to his opponent and himself practice time is left entirely to the teams for it would be impossi ble to utilize time and space by pre arranging practice periods only the tournament begins on monday march 14 and by that time full in formation including schedules will be on hand and all doubtful points will be discussed at the council meeting that same evening the following men are barred from participation in the inter frat ernity basketball games on account of their connection with the varsity squad harper lingle coleman maurer w springsteen a spring steen f c o'keefe lees dono van hartung it is also understood that men out of college shall not be eligible this latter statement applies to all inter fraternity sports the basketball rules were drafted on those in force lasit year and are given below the choice in regard to rule three is to be settled by the competing teams as they wish further announcements concern ing the pool tournament will be made next week as some impor tant information regarding suitable places to play the matches is expect ed the matter of medlals and trophies may also be given some consideration basketball tournament 1 . no men who took part in any varsity games of the 1920-21 sea son are eligible 2 all games must be played un der the intercollegiate rules 3 the referee shall be are phi delta theta psi upsilon kap pa sigma theta xi chi psi and sigma chi theta xi came into the third round by easily defeating tie beta theta pi bowlers and the kappa sigma team won out after a good fight with the delta tau delta group there were three new men that entered the select class of high bowlers by the last two games the first honors are still in posses sion of carlisle sigma chi with 213 parker delta tau delta stepped into a tie with loeser for second place by making a mark of 203 in his last match third place is held by straub phi delta theta with his mark of 201 and fourth place stand's at a deadlock between boynton delrta phi simpson del ta tau edlta and vogeley kappa sigma with 197 theta xi warn the theta xi bowling team had very little trouble in defeating the beta theta pi team winning by a good margin in each contest it was the first match for the betas and they were not in very good shape the theta xi group bowled a good steady game and no one on the team had every bout the quakers won from princeton 16-15 defeated columbia 18-13 but lost to perm state just last saturday 33-0 the latter score was due to the fact that perm had only three regular men in the lineup and can hardly be taken as a criterion of the strength of the team perm will undoubtedly pre sent their strongest lineup for the meet tomorrow myers and miller will try out in the 125-pound class and the winner will wrestle in the meet against penro the 115-pound department will be taken care of by schwarz bach who defeated child's on deci sion in the tryouts the 135-pound class rests be tween gihon and thompson the latter has about recovered from his illness and will be in the trials this week eddie loeser will again occupy the 158-pound berth without hav ing to try out in the 145-pound class trials will be run if bertolet does not recover with hollimshead and wright as the probable con tenders both roy and morehouse are con i'ned in taylor hall under the quar antine and it is probable that they also will not be available roy was just recovering from tonsilitis when the ban was placed on the dorms asa result good will probably be called on again in the 175-pound class and carlisle will continue his work in the unlimited class a slight chance of switching these two men about exists as carlisle is down to 179 pounds and would stand a much better chance against a 175-pound opponent quite a shake-up has occurred in the lehigh lineup and the team which is to meet perm this week is still doubtful as to its personnel the greatest cause for worry is the fact that captain bertolet is sick and may not be able to take part to morrow johnny was taken ill wednesday with an attack of grippe and his condition is such that in all likelihood jie will not represent le high against perm the last dual meet of the season will be staged tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock in taylor gym when lehigh meets the university of pennsylvania wrestlers hon john m patterson of philadelphia will be the speaker at the sunday y ml c a meeting this week at 4.15 p m in drown hall judge patterson is judge of the court of common pleas of philadelphia and president of the dickens fellowship club he has been prominent in civic and political circles and his talk should prove of interest to the student body in gen eral this is his second visit tc lehigh university and those whc heard him last time remember him as a man of admirable personality a cello solo by f c walters 23 accompanied by m w summers 21 w r ill be the musical feature harold locke 21 will preside tomorrow night the freshmen five will pit their basketball ability against the nazareth high school aggregation on the latter's floor ir their last scheduled game of the sea son little is known of the com parative strength of the two teams but the first year men are anxious to wind up the schedule with a de cisive victory and will force their younger opponents to the limit the lineup will probably be the same as played against the sopho more team last saturday and the following men are expected to make the trip manager mcelvain gil more and genfshart forwards ; gal lagher center and ruttenberg and bortz guards the victory over the princeton nassau team in taylor gym last saturday afternoon ended the bas ketball season of 1920-21 for le high it marked the close of one of the hardest schedules that lehigh has encountered in basketball in a number of years and under these conditions the bethlehem quintet did very good work the majority of the teams that lehigh faced during the past sea son were of a very strong calibre and defeat at the hands of such teams is nothing to be ashamed of they were defeats but in the great er number of cases the defeats were only by small margins of points and this indicated that lehigh put up a strong battle and went down fight ing the season closed with the credit side of the lehigh balance sheet having a little advantage over the debit side eight defeats were chalked up against six victories however as stated before these eight losses include encounters with some of the best teams in the east among these strong teams are : army navy cornell perm lafay ette swarthmore and catholic u army presented the strongest team giving lehigh her worst defeat o the season when she traveled tc west point by the score of 33-14 navy was able to double lehigh score at annapolis after lehigh had fallen before catholic u by a two-point margin io a bard-fought game the day before cornell's vic tory was by a margin of 11 points but it was an interesting and clever ly played game all the way through perm was taken by surprise on feb ruary 5 when lehigh equaled her tallying from the field but as usual the team lost out on the superior fo'iil shooting of danny mcnich ol swartmore visited bethlehem with one of the fastest and clever est teamis seen in taylor gym in a lomg time and took the brown and white scalp by the score of 17-11 , those defeats didn't mean s much to lehigh but the fact that lafayette triumphed twice over the the brown and white quintet was the thing that hurt the hardest part of the lickings was that they were only by a few points and vic tory was in the hands of either team during the whole game the first battle took place at easton in a cramped floor that was located for the conflict the game was a close one all the way through both teams playing a much more defensive game than offensive field goah were as scarce as hen's teeth and guarding became so intense in the second half that only one double decker was counted the game at bethlehem on march 2 was a conflict of the same type and one which gave a great num ber of thrills to the spectators le high took the lead at the start and held it during almost
