plans for the show were drawn up at a meeting held at the beth lehem hotel last friday evening seventh war loan needs lehigh's aid america's seventh war loan drive being held from may 14 to june 30 is scheduled to raise 4,000,000,000 in e bonds one third more than any other previ ous drive the treasury depart ment is counting heavily upon the nation's educational institutions to put this drive over the importance of schools and colleges in putting the war loan drives over is evidenced by the record they displayed in the sixth war loan drive to quote some figures 20,000,000 people heard about the drive from students of these 11,000,000 were asked to buy bonds and 3,000,000 of them would never have been approached in any other way over 1,500,000 people bought their extra bonds in educational institutions v-e day services observed in chapel the official announcement of the cessation of hostilities in the european theater brings to each of us a profound feeling of rejoic ing a rejoicing that is tempered by the knowledge that world vic tory is not yet won this is no time for exuberant celebration but rather an opportunity for prayerful thanksgiving and for reconstruction to the unfinished task which confronts us all in compliance with the above statement from the administra tion the faculty student body and many of the lehigh family assembled in packer memorial chapel at 11:15 yesterday tues day for a brief service of thanks giving vol lii — no 39 bethlehem pa wednesday may 9 1945 price 5 cents five man committee elections are may 14-15 eligible students men in their 5 6 7th semesters have already turned their point lists into ar cadia for the coming five man committee elections however lists will be accepted by the ar cadia office until saturday morn ing may 12 at 9:00 a m the new five man commit tee will be elected in the follow ing way an election will be held on monday and tuesday may 14 and 15 a table will be set up in the hall outside of the supply bu reau in the alumni building and a student will be on duty from 9:00 a m to 5:00 p m to conduct the election there will be a regular balloting form from which the stu dent will pick his five men he will mark down his five choices sign his name to the printed ballot and deposit it in the ballot box this type of election will make it a secret ballot every lehigh student should vote it is his duty receiving congratulations from richard c macadams secretary of delta omicron theta and benjamin c williams principal catasauqua high school is charles petrie a student at catasauqua high school who won first prize in the extemporaneous speech conference held saturday in packard laboratory shown in the editorial office of the brown and white are robert treser al vetrosky and a group of delegates to the pi delta ep silon journalism symposium representing eight high schools of the lehigh valley area catasauqua senior annexes first prize eight schools attend dot speech contest charles petrie a senior at catasauqua high school won the first prize in delta omicron the ta's extemporaneous speaking contest which was held in pack ard laboratory on saturday after noon petrie spoke on the subject do 18 year olds have the expe rience necessary to use the ballot wisely sally woodhull of bethlehem won second prize with a speech on the subject is it possible that an international police force would hinder rather than help the cause of world peace other winners other winners were third prize frances breisch jr of slatington high school fourth prize charles markley of emma us high school fifth prize for rest schaeffer of allentown high school after chairman dick macadams called the assemblage to order professor albert a rights facul ty adviser of delta omicron theta spoke on the activities of the de bating society and outlined brief ly the purposes of the extempor aneous speaking contest after professor rights speech the five contestants spoke on their assigned topics the judges then deliberated on the five speeches chairman judge was james c lanshe first assistant district attorney of le high county the other judges were professor albert a rights and miss madelaine skelly of ce dar crest college after the judges reached their decision mr lanshe announced the winners and awarded the prizes the first prize was a lov ing-cup and other prizes consist ed of cash awards and books high school journalists at pi belt meet ex-lehigh prof speaks to journalism symposium dale gramley editor of the bethlehem globe times and for mer professor of journalism at le high university gave the welcom ing address to the delegates of eight high schools of the lehigh valley area who were present at the pi delta epsilon honorary journalism society symposium on saturday morning in packard au ditorium mr gramley as grand president of pi delta epsilon as sured the youthful delegates that the amateur journalist could learn the high ideals of journalism through the chartered purpose of pi delta epsilon to encourage hon esty accuracy and skill in dealing with newspaper writing allentown printer speaks following the talk by mr gramley mr edwin schlechter printer and publisher from allen town spoke on the problems of printing and publishing and show ed a film on the technique of printing a book during the meet ing which followed lido lacocca discussed the problems of make up h edward gross answered questions on editorial policy wil lard boothby spoke on business and robert treser discussed the gathering of news mr e j hart globe times spoke on his 1 expe riences as a cub reporter after the meeting in packard laboratory the group adjourned to lamberton hall where lunch was served the meeting was concluded with a tour of the brown and white and epitome offices in drown hall tour of offices in attendance were delegates from liberty high school naz areth high school allentown high school central catholic high school allentown catasauqua high school wilson borough high school and emmaus high school cyanide point lists must be in by may 12 point lists should be turned in by all candidates on or before may 12 to the arcadia office in drown hall included in the lists should be all activities and aver ages for the five semesters previ ous to application men in the classes of june 46 and october 46 are eligible cyanide the junior honorary so ciety has announced that it is now ready to take in new members for the coming semester eleven men will be accepted from those who seek admittance scl added to arcadia the student concert lecture committee was made a committee of arcadia at the last arcadia meeting held in drown hall mon day may 7 1945 it was unani mously approved by the cabinet recommendations for student members of scl committee shall be subject to arcadia approval be fore being submitted by arcadia to the office of the president arcadia feels that in making this change it will strengthen stu dent government and will be a fine step forward in increasing ar cadia's prestige also presented to the cabinet was a petition by scl committee for a seat on arcadia bill booth by the president of arcadia ap pointed a committee to study the proposal and make a written re port to be presented to the cabinet at its next meeting new election set-up the method of electing the 5 man committee on classes has been changed where formerly brown & white ballots were used voting will now be done on closed ballots elections will be held monday and tuesday the 14 and 15 of may respectively in the hall adjacent to the supply bu reau this selection of the 5-man committee is an important duty and it is extremely urgent that every student cast a ballot continued on page 2 the president of arcadia read to the cabinet a letter addressed to all the candidates for the five man committee must have their names in at the arcadia office by saturday morning at nine o'clock plans for the flagpole day cere mony have been completed and it will be held friday may 18 at 11 the usual awards and honorary tappings will take place war show comes here saturday may 19 will see a gala exhibition including a mock battle and display of arms at taylor stadium and a parade through south bethlehem to launch the 7th war loan brown and white lehigh university forty-five battle veterans are coming up from fort benning georgia among them commando kelley of pittsburgh to take part in the show the latter is under the sponsorship of the united steel workers of america cio and the united states war finance commission on friday evening preceding the show there will be a display of weapons at bush & bull's de partment store the show will go on rain or shine get arcadia lists in ... arcadia is calling for lists from all men who are interested in run ning for election to the arcadia five man committee on classes last week this call was issued and candidates were asked to submit ac tivity lists to the arcadia office before noon last monday a grand total of six lists were submitted in order to get more candidates on the supposition that the student body at large had not seen the an nouncement arcadia has extended the deadline
