vol lii no 37 m & c to present time oi your life saroyan play to be broadcast this saturday in broughal high school auditorium at 8:40 lewis although many of the play ers are newcomers to the club they show excellent potentialities in the difficult portrayals of saro yan's characters jimmy kutz the young star of the mustard and cheese carbaret in 1944 will also be on hand to sing several specialty numbers in the part of a newsboy the time of your life has been in rehearsal for about two months and promises to be an evening of worthwhile entertain ment this saturday night april 28th the mustard and cheese club of lehigh university will present its first and only production of the pres ent semester the play is entitled the time of your life and was written by william saroyan the lights at broughal high school are expected to dim promptly at 8:40 p m tickets to the show are on sale at all fraternity houses as well as the supply bureau they may also be obtained from any member of mustard and cheese balcony seats will cost 50 cents and orchestra seats will be seventy five cents and a dollar each stu dents will receive a 50 cent reduc tion on all tickets newcomers show promise allen goodman president of the club is taking the lead in the role of joe a young loafer with money and a good heart the female lead is capably handled by betty steams in the part of kitty who refuses to be degraded by a life that she is forced to lead other important characters in the play are taken by dick macadams bob treser jon epstein and tom blue nocturne hailed as huge success jimmy ray plays to 160 couples saturday night the long waited and much postponed blue nocturne spon sored by the combined town and dormitory councils took place last saturday evening in grace hall from 9 until 12 don derr chair man of the dance committee hailed the dance as a huge success approximately 160 couples danced to the smooth strains of jimmy ray and his orchestra the sizzling trumpet solos and rides by jimmy himself paced the arrangements without turning the rest of the orchestra into mere background music as some ace trumpeters are wont to do the vocals of the evening were capab ly handled by charming june rodgers winsome blonde singer whose torch songs did much to add to the enjoyment of the occasion the dance was thoroughly en joyed by all who attended and one thing happened which has been no ticeably lacking in former dances faced with the curfew closing time of midnight the couples ar rived in sizeable numbers quite early in the evening by ten o'clock the floor was well crowded with couples honor aries initiates 7 pi tau sigma eta kappa nu and tau beta pi national honor ary engineering fraternities held their formal initiations last week followed by a joint banquet at lamberton hall james william sauber was the sole initiate into the chi chapter of eta kappa nu ee honorary in a secret ceremony held in packard lab at 1:30 wednesday afternoon tuesday night at a ceremony in the lounge of packard lab three me's were initiated into pi tau sigma the honorary me society they were richard macadams richard huyett and melvin ram berg also initiated was mr rob ert moyer vice president of the heilman fan and blower com pany in recognition of the ability and leadership he has shown in the field of engineering dick huyett and dr bela er doss became members of tau beta pi in a secret ceremony held in the society's room in packard lab thursday evening tau beta pi is the national scholastic honorary engineering fraternity which was originally founded at lehigh its officers are bob mayer president ed manning vice president jos eph rengert treasurer lido lacocca corresponding secretary and ed pieski recording secre tary dot contest will be may 5 the extemporaneous speaking contest sponsored by delta omi cron theta national debating hon orary will be held at 2:45 on the afternoon of may 5 of the four high schools to be represented bethlehem high and catasauqua high have already chosen their topics topics selected the contestant from bethlehem high will speak on some phases of the question should u s par ticipate in an international police force after the war while the catasauqua high school contestant will discuss the question should the voting age in the u s be low ered to 18 the other two com peting high schools allentown high and nazareth high have not yet chosen their topics for the dis cussion chairman chosen assistant district attorney james c lanshe of allentown a prominent figure in the lehigh county bar association who has long had an active and critical in terest in extemporaneous speak ing will act as chairman judge at the contest rules and prizes decided in assigning the topics the so ciety will send a list of eight topics to each of the high schools repre sented the high school will choose the topic most interesting to its speaker and report its choice to the society the society will then send a list of five sub-topics to the school with the notice that the speaker might be asked to speak on any one of these a couple of roustabouts from mustard and cheese cast for time of your life brennecke and smiley to speak at alumni meet dr cornelius brennecke of the e e department and mr e k smiley of the admissions depart ment will both address a meeting of the northeast pennsylvania alumni club this thursday eve ning the dinner will take place at the hotel redington in wilkes barre dr brennecke's address will be entitled electronics and its application it will consist of four main parts an introduction to the principles of electronics a summary of the history of elec tronics their use in war-time such as radar and automatic gun di recting and their use in the post war world on such things as de vices for home consumption pi delta epsilon holds annual moravian meet lehigh's chapter of pi delta epsilon journalism honorary held their annual joint meeting with moravian last week at mo ravian's phi mv epsilon house after the discussion pi lambda phi acted as host at a dance and a songfest for the members of the society mrs betty birk steams mora vian graduate and former pi delt gave a short talk on her exper ience on small newspapers this was followed by a short talk by miss betty adams on her job as a spot commercial writer for eas ton's station west the two speeches were followed by a dis cussion period during which the speakers answered the questions which had arisen in the minds of the audience miss june rodgers blonde vocalist sings along as jimmy ray and his orchestra give out with some smooth music at the recent town dorm dance the first big dance of the semester blue nocturne was judged a success by the committees who plan ned the dance and the 160 couples who enjoyed three hours of pleasant dancing valentines go to 33 of students friday evening dean wray h congdon sent to his less indus trious students 99 valentines these notes of good cheer con sisting of friendly warnings to all who are failing are sent to the undergraduates each mid - sem ester despite unsettled conditions the students have made a slight im provement over last semester for this time 99 out of 288 received warnings while last semester 138 valentines were sent to 339 stu dents the contest among the various curricula to see which one receives the greatest number of these greetings was very close indeed with mechanical engineering's 18 capturing first place and the arts college tying with the chemical engineering department for sec ond with 17 apiece the remain ing valentines were distributed as follows civil engineering 14 electrical engineering 9 indus trial engineering 5 general col lege 4 metallurgical engineering 2 and engineering physics 2 brown and white lehigh university price 5 cents bethlehem pa wednesday april 25 1945 observe v-jej day reverently • • • when v-e day is finally announced americans will observe the state of final victory with a quiet meditative day of prayer in keep ing with the national plan of opening the churches dr beardslee university chaplain has announced that packer chapel will be opened for student and faculty meditation and prayer there will be no regular services and classes will go on as usual but dr beardslee feels that this quiet observance will be in keeping with the spirit of the day
