big bat of firstbaseman jim mearns the engineers had an easy job subduing a villavona team composed of navy and marine trainees the fireworks started for lehigh in the top half of the first inning when wilson was given a free pass to first base mearns came through with the first of his three hits a single back through the middle into center field stan wagner the first of the pitchers put on the score in the second the wildcats threatened to score but wilson ended their attempt with a strikeout lehigh once again hit the jackpot in the third when the wildcat pitcher wagner walked lindholm and wilson to set the stage for more scoring mearns stepped to the plate and after swinging at and missing the first pitch slammed the next into deep left-center field and went the circuit no more scoring was done by either side until the fifth inning when the carawaymen collected three more tallies lindholm reached first base on an error wilson was walked and mearns hit a ground ball in the infield which was thrown away lindholm scored and everyone was safe potowski stepped up to the plate and proceeded to tee off on a two run double to right center field lehigh threatened in every other inning but was not able to push across any more runs wilson looked better than he did last season he fanned 13 and walked five it was his wildness that gave the wildcats their scores in the sixth an infield out stolen base and an outfield fly gave villanova their first score a walk another stolen base and another outfield fly brought the mainliners their second tally in the seventh in the ninth villa nova scored for the last time on a walk a stolen base and a wild throw villanova substituted freely and in all used 16 men it made no difference to wilson who faced him and he held them to only four hits if the team can con tinue the season as well as they started the record will be one of the best in many years the first home game will be played at steel field with drew on wednes day april 11
