campus last fall two lehigh students charged the lower saucon township police department with racially motivated harassment they were stopped for having too many passen gers in their car and said they were treated like criminals for no reason chuck perm 92 was one of the students in the car he said five police cruisers ap peared on the scene and the officers assumed that he and his friends were criminals i felt like i was being treated not as a citizen perm said but as a sub-citizen the police officers had a predetermined belief that we had drugs in the car or something he felt the incident would not have hap pened if he were white we weren't given the proper respect that a white person would be given he said willis said he always tells prospective students that they may be involved in racially the brown and white tuesday february 9 1993 lehigh university vol 100 no 27 see ijc page 8 in question is new rieckelman said,"we were confused by the severity of our sanction after much less severe sanctions were delivered earlier in the week for similar circumstances he said he really doesn't think there is a difference between phi kap's and delts violations we both broke the same rule rieckelman said recomendations for sanctioning and the deci sions are not official until erickson approves them but robeson also said the decisions are not often overturned since i've been here in fall 89,"hesaid i've only seen one or two decisions over turned out of about 60 or 70 these cases are different because it's the first time the ijc has had to deal with these types of violations robeson said the vio lations are different because the rush policy of the spring semester on jan 20 1993 bob rieckelman 94 president of phi kap said his house received seven weeks social probation while delts received four weeks social probation rieckelman said both fraternities were put on disciplinary proba tion for a semester along with other pro grams robeson would not confirm the ijc sanctions without approval from mark erickson dean of student life robeson said the ijc gives erickson by kevin kniffin assistant news editor last week phi kappa theta and delta tau delta fraternities were found guilty of violating rush policy by the interfraternity judiciary committee according to bob robeson assistant dean for greek affairs robeson said both houses were found guilty of violating rush policy iv a which states no formal invitation pre-bid may be extended to a rushee prior to the beginning phi kap delts found guilty of rush violations at&t exxon give lehigh grant money moon over mountaintop 68w ptate by ross sell saturday night's full moon illuminates the buildings on mountalntop campus while an arctic blast forced temperatures down into the single digits the next full moon will be on march 8 see grants page 8 at&t awarded 286,000 in grants to various departments at lehigh recently and the university received a grant from exxon to support recruitment engineering and minor ity programs at&t has given the university a total of nearly 1.5 million since 1989 students in the social sciences will have greater access to computers due to at&t's generosity its grant supplied 20 ncr computers linked by a local area network a printer and equipment which will be supplemented by lehigh and located in the computer facility in grace hall by danielle bergamo news writer lehigh's blacks face racially based harassment by court harson news editor at a time when colleges and universities are emphasizing diversity and competing for a small number of qualified minority students lehigh is faced with the task of enticing black students to a campus whose few blacks grapple with ignorance disrespect and racism lehigh struggles to recruit black students because the black population on campus is not large enough to attract more blacks you take all of the problems and tie them see blacks page 4 motivated situations you tell them there is going to be some bumpy times he said geoff haskell assistant director of resi dential life and member of the commission on diversity agreed that lehigh's minority students are not always comfortable 1 think they feel there is a pretty signifi cant amount of racism on campus he said they feel harassed and singled out they are stopped and asked are you a student more than a white student would be perm said he has encountered many pro fessors and students at lehigh who assume he is less capable than his white classmates you've got to throw it in their faces to show people you really belong here he said haskell said black students do not need the additional pressure in the classroom up in a knot and then you invite african american students to campus said bruce gardiner associate director of admissions they see it is a predominantly white cam pus and it's tough gardiner also said cultural trends in the black community also contribute to low en rollments in colleges culturally there are a large number of african american students who don't be lieve they could go to college he said maurice willis one of two admissions counselors who helps recruit minority stu dents said blacks seldom realize they are qualified to attend lehigh as long as you're a capable student willis said lehigh is a place you should be considering but even the most capable black students might not want to consider lehigh many people feel
