if council to probe rushing last monday night march 12 the inter-fraternity council held its monthly meeting in drown hall the main discussion was on the question of rushing — to rush or not to rush — that is the ques tion the only formal action on the question of rushing was to ap point a committee to look into the matter and report at the next meeting organized rushing went out with the war when the council voted to suspend the 11 by-laws on the books concerning rushing for the duration the storm of discussion broke two weeks ago with ed gross edi torial advocating deferred rushing but for many weeks previous to that first outward indication there had been much hashing and re hashing of the matter and it need ed only a little boost to bring it into the limelight at present all theories are just theories — and ru mors until the i-f council acts formally there will be no further change in rushing rules also discussed monday night was the question of taking space in the freshman handbook that is being put out by sigma rho sigma for the incoming june 1945 class it was decided that each fraternity take as much space as it desires and also that the i-f council as a whole would take from two to five pages baseball outlook appears favorable five lettermen from last season expected to show up for first practice on thursday as winter passes and warm spring breezes start to blow across the campus baseball once more comes into the spotlight on thursday march 15 at 4:30 p.m in the lower gym there will be a meeting of all candidates for the team everyone regardless of previous experience who would like to play is urged to come to the meeting the engineers in last year's spring season powered their w!ay to the championship of the middle three which includes rutgers lafayette and lehigh with three victories over both lafayette and rutgers the season was highlighted by victories over perm state and drew sparking the squad to vic tory were speedy shortsttfp/frank ie majczan centerfielder tom winco and pitchers bud lind holm and lefty wilson it-wats mainly lefty's blazing fastball and bud lindholm's tricky curves that made last year's season such a success spark plugs are gone when summer came coach eb caraway had to form a new team from the holdovers from the spring team and the entering freshman backbone of the team was once again big lefty wilson who in the course of the season pitched one hitters against both princeton and swarthmore also outstanding was the hitting of fred attaway and the fielding of don walters this year's team will have a nu cleus of men returning from last year's squad of the three pitch ers with previous experience swede lindholm will probably switch off at shortstop or third base and lefty wilson and earle compton will double at first and in the outfield the infield has only one holdover in utility man chuck hafner in the outfield there is also only one returning player walt potowsky the big hole is at catcher wjhere there is no one with any experience few of the other teams have better prospects and the brown and white has a good chance to make this season a successful one the schedule baseball . . . 1945 april 7 — before march 21 cyanide picks six juniors for new semester society's ranks now at full working strength with the initiation of six men into cyanide the junior honorary society that organization brought itself to full working strength for the coming semester those just taken in are richard macadams m.e richard huyett m.e sher man sass bus allan goodman arts and theodore shook chem e all from the class of june 46 and bob jones bus feb 46 speaking at the ceremony prof albert rights roused his audience with a criticism of the present student-faculty relations he de clared it was important for stu dents through fheir government to learn what their responsibilities were in student life just as it is important for educated beings to know what their responsibilities are as citizens of a larger govern ment in later life cyanide as a junior student government society has three ma jor functions according to profes sor rights first as a responsible body it must recognize that college organizations especially in time of war are constantly disintegrating as well as trying to be construc tive so that their membership must be constantly en the alert to en courage all students to protect student rights and privileges sec ondly this body must see to it that the responsibility of leadership is not centered on just a few stu dents as lehigh honorary groups have been doing these past few semesters for such centralization continued on page 4 an intra-mural fencing meet will take place in the near future if interested please noti fy bart immediately scl group plans fine concert series at a meeting held last wednes day in the office of registrar cur tis a proposal w(as approved for the organization of the student concert-lecture committee this proposal will be sent to the ad ministrative committee the committee decided to take a poll of student preferences on subjects for future programs it is necessary for all students to co operate so that a truly representa tive opinion can be obtained the ballots are available at the supply bureau at lamberton hall and at the arcadia office at drown hall the student committee has ar ranged for excellent programs which have been presented in the past including the opera the marriage of figaro and such noted personalities as alexander woolcott paul robeson cornelia otis skinner and norman thomas the committee is already mak ing arrangements for programs to be given in the 1945-46 season funds for these enterprises are provided by the one dollar fee paid by each student wright aero speaker is guest at a.s.m.e meeting the local student chapter of the american society of mechanical engineers met on march 8 in packard lab the feature speak er of the evening was mr h e linsley of the wright aeronautical corporation after a short talk by joseph rengert 1.e june 45 about the society he turned the meeting over to mr linsley mr linsley discussed the devel opment of the wright cyclone en gines and concluded with some ex tremely interesting observations about post-war aviation mr linsley's main point was that the future of civil aviation is not near ly as promising as has been adver tised by aviation manufactures vol lii — no 31 bethlehem pa wednesday march 14 1945 price 5 cents lehigh student named on radio as inventor on sunday march 4 john nes bitt famous radio commentator of the passing parade discussed an invention by jordan bierman chem e june 47 and the adding of his name as a foremost repre sentative to the group of youth in science at the age of eight jordan in vented a collapsible clothes bar that might be put on the wall of a closet and locked when pulled down into place after using it one may easily put the bar back in place the inventor had the typ ical hall closet at company time in mind when he was struck with his brainstorm the thing was patented in 1937 and although no definite plans have been made as yet our modern inventor expects to do something with it in the near fu ture pictured here are the new cyanide men recently honored at an initiation banquet held at the sun inn seated left to right are al goodman and dick huyett standing ted shook dick macadams and bob jones friday after noon for a short reorganization meeting in the past the c e society has had a somewhat checkered career having been originally organized in 1873 reorganized in 1901 and again in 1922 when it became a student branch of the american society of civil engineers organ ized to bring the students into closer contact with professional engineers and to create an inter est in civil engineering the society was once a powerful interest in the affairs of embryo c e.'s to en liven the monthly meetings guest speakers were brought in to lec ture oh subjects related to civil engineering officers chosen for the society are president robert frey c e june 45 vice-president corne lius lindholm c e oct 45 sec retary rene laurencot c e june 45 treasurer peter facchiano c e oct 45 and faculty adviser prof harry payrow nineteen members attended the meeting red cross calls again ... serving in still another war year is the red cross public servant in both peace and war once again colleges and universities through out the country are being asked to contribute to the red cross the task now at hand is to raise 200,000,000 throughout the nation to carry on the organization's work for another year however that is not all the red cross must maintain an increasing flow of blood plasma to the fighting fronts it must serve in every theater of oper ation providing for our men in training camps and hospitals and in addition it must carry on its activities on the home front when you of lehigh are approached by a red cross solicitor give generously to the 1945 red cross war fund
