the brown and white lehigh university friday november 13 1992 vol 100 no 18 conduct defined for lehigh-lafayette by eric kirchberger news writer rules for this year's lehigh-lafayette game will force students to adhere to more stringent guidelines defining disruptive be havior failure to comply with these regulations by a student from either university will result in an immediate suspension from their re spective schools below are the rules defining disruptive behavior set and agreed upon by both lehigh and lafayette 1 physical abuse or fighting 2 actions intended to harm others 3 destruction of property 4 vandalism of property 5 behavior that incites others to vio lence lehigh president peter likins said each university's goal is not to increase penalties on students who display disruptive behavior but to make the judicial process more expe dient this new procedure has developed be cause in the past the judicial process has taken too long we don't want a lengthy process that will diminish the impact of the decision likins said the new rules governing disruptive be havior have been established as a warning to students not to commit violent acts likins said one of the things we want to do is to persuade people not to get involved in fight ing or other violent behavior likins said it is a way to motivate people not to break the rules the punishment policy being enacted is a harsh one likins said it was intended to be that way because of the circumstances that are presented at the lehigh-lafayette game it is our opinion that the coasequences of violent acts after the lafayette game are more serious than the consequences of the same act elsewhere on campus likins said see rules page 5 high cost makes education tough likins says by maclean guthrie news writer a grim situation was revealed to lehigh alumni and affiliates tuesday when lehigh president peter likins spoke about the national rise in tuition of private universities ove r breakfas t in the wood dining hall of the mountaintop campus likins illustrated the importance of receiving a higher education despite the tuition trap which was the title of his speech there's a value attached to learning today that's unprec edented in human affairs likins said the economy of the world today is based on knowledge likins gave estimates of the average incomes per year earned by graduates of different levels of education at the lowest end of the income scale were grade school graduates earning approximately $ 1 7 623 per year on the opposite end were the college graduates with additional post-graduate education earning 45,000 or more per year there's a clear payoff for getting an education and yet something is out there that's created a reluctance to allow people to ob tain it likins said he said that after world war 11 there was a commitment to extending educa tion to americans the federal government gave great support to the country s universities with funds going toward research in fields like health care and medicine it seems for many decades that federal support has paid off but something along the line went wrong likins said he said private university tuitions are the highest they have been and that they have increased more than medical care housing and car inflation because of medical research and the bloating of the economy it seems for many ! decades that federal i support has paid off but something along the line went wrong ■° peter likins lehigh president see trap page 5 see scholar page 4 alumni however the zeta psi candidate was not eligible for prizes due to a conflict of interest thomas tachovsky president of the pennsylvania divi sion of the american cancer society commended lehigh for its effort and success tachovsky said " volunteerism is a great hallmark of our nation lehigh is a good example of this altruism i thank you on behalf of the penasylvania and lehigh valley unit and on behalf of the cancer patients whose lives you have made more comfortable pleasant and even a little longer by what you did here tonight he said jeffrey beekman 94 president of the zeta psi fraternity said we at zeta psi are not only proud of the substantial contribution we are making to the american cancer society but also proud that we helped to bring the lehigh community together even in a recession we were able to bring in more money than lehigh has ever brought in before beekman said the election was originally started by the tau epsilon phi fraternity in 1990 which disbanded last year due to financial troubles zeta psi approached economics professor alvin cohen treasurer and consultant of the election and asked him to take over the organization cohen began preparations with zeta psi public relations chairman andrew frishman 94 last april meeting with by tara hurley news writer b&w photo by jon sigler associate dean of students jennifer volchko speaks at sunday's awards ceremony the brothers of zeta psi fraternity presented a check for 7,115 to sandra smith president of the lehigh valley unit of the american cancer society to be used directly for research as a result of the third annual good scholar election on at sunday's awards ceremony with the extra $ 1 500 in awards that were returned to the cancer society smith walked away with a total of 8,615 that evening a significant increase over the 6,274 of last year the good scholar election sponsored by zeta psi was held in memory of erik bird a brother of delta upsilon fraternity who died unexpectedly in december 1991 of a brain tumor master ofßusiness administration candidate michael moriarty took first place having raised $ 1 220 through a raffle he arranged the mba program was awarded $ 1 000 which they donated back to the cancer society and moriarty donated his round-trip airline ticket to anywhere in the continen tal united states to bird's father i only agreed to do this if two requirements were met moriarty said one the money we won would be donated right back to the american cancer society and two that this airline ticket be given to erik's father to fly him up for the lehigh-lafayette football game second place was awarded to the independent cat egory which does not support a candidate individual faculty donated 710 and dedicated their 500 prize money directly to cancer research third prize went to the theta chi fraternity candidate john comas 94 who raised 644 theta chi received 250 and comas was given a gift certificate to bethlehem sporting goods honorable mention went to the hillel society which raised 612 for their candidate mark levine 93 who received a gift certificate to the lehigh bookstore the largest amount of money raised by a house was zeta psi collecting 1,319 from friends relatives and good scholars raise 8,61 5 for cancer fight gloria m bower university libraries fairchild/martinoale libr no.ooba students give bstck to the lehigh vslley pqqb 7
